The stage is set at the Capitol in Lansing and Michigan State Police are ready to take action as they wait for Tuesday's planned protests against right-to-work.

"We have increased state police presence due to lessons learned in Ohio and Wisconsin," said MSP officer Gene Adamczyk. "This is a very emotional topic."

On Monday, it was all quiet at the Capitol. Registered nurses with the Michigan Nursing Association stood silent on the Capitol steps as they protested right-to-work legislation.

The ‘sick’ teachers are heading to Lansing to protest a bill set to be signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Rick Snyder that would make Michigan a right to work state. If the legislation does become law, employees would no longer be forced to join a union if they did not want to.

“For us to succeed, we have to remain competitive. That’s why I believe we should make Michigan a freedom-to-work state,” Snyder said at a press conference last Thursday.

Obama joins Michigan Democrats in push to stall right-to-work bills

Obama added his voice to the cause during an appearance at a plant in Redford, mocking the “right to work” label supporters have used to describe the efforts to prohibit requiring non-union employees to financially support unions at the workplace.

“These so-called right-to-work laws, they don’t have anything to do with economics, they have everything to do with politics,” Obama said. “What they’re really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money.”

Snip; The Republican-led Michigan House on Thursday narrowly approved a proposal that would prohibit public schools from automatically deducting union dues from the paychecks of teachers and other employees.

Snip; The state's largest teachers union, the Michigan Education Association, is fighting against the legislation. The MEA has clashed with Republicans over multiple bills this year, including measures to limit the significance of teacher tenure and require many public employees to pay more of their health care costs.
Another potential fight is pending over a separate, developing plan that could make Michigan a so-called "right to teach" state. The measure likely will be drafted to prohibit requiring teachers to join or financially support a union as a condition of their employment.

Snip from 2002; In response to an anticipated budget deficit of over $10 million, the Michigan Education Association’s (MEA) officers are proposing to raise membership dues the maximum amount allowed by the union’s bylaws. The average full-time public school teacher will see his or her annual MEA membership dues increased by $111.90, from $457.40 to $569.30 annually, a 25 percent increase. These dues amounts are in addition to National Education Association (NEA) and local association dues.

The deficit is believed to have arisen due to an increase in the cost of benefits for MEA employees, and lagging membership dues income because the reluctance of many school districts to hire new teachers or support staff. MEA membership fell at least 225 members short of projections and income was $628,559 short of expectations, according to an MEA document.

The average MEA employee earned about $81,000, although the actual figures ranged from a high of approximately $204,000, the gross salary recorded for Arthur Przybylowicz, general counsel, to $8,500 paid to a bargainer. Executive director Luigi Battaglieri’s gross salary was reported as $195,000. The average Uniserv director salary was about $100,000.

In many states it is illegal for teachers to strike. They would be fired the moment they did. Michigan teachers best check their contracts.

The Unions should shut the whole damn State down not just a few groups of teachers here and there. Close the auto plants/Schools/State Government Unions all of them and then start bussing them all into Lansing. This Governor the Rickster/Repo Legislature and the KOCH Bros should be shown the door after this bullshit. This supposed Law was never even taken to Legislative Comm for recommendation before being sent to the floor for a vote!

Michigan Teacher here. I'm on the job. Can't wait to op out of my union. BTW it is illeagle for teachers to strike in MI, those that are protesting today are on personal leave.

No shock here. They are spoiled brainwashed Union members. Not willing to sacrifice a little pay to keep a job. Michigan is Dying, and even if you were to get back all the manufacturing, it would not employ a quarter of what it did 40 years ago, Technology has put the auto worker out of buisness and they are too stupid to see it.
