A deep well would be least likely to be affected. Of course. If you know the answer, please share. If there are no utilities, you can't continue to use the toilet now can you. And you can't just throw it in the trash since there'll be no garbage pick up. (also some gross thoughtless clods will). And burying it on your property will just be extremely unsanitary not to mention disgusting. You're asking for all kinds of disease there. Do you burn it or what? When cow manure is sufficiently dried, since they consume grass it makes an excellent fire. Not mad smelling either. Human waste has been burned by soldiers, but only because they had sufficient accelerants to do so. If there were a collapse, you'd seperate the urine from the feces. Urine is an excellent fertillizer and if the person is healthy, then it's sterile (no bacteria). Urine was used by many societies to clean laundry, and as you will run out of chemical soaps, bleach, and ammonia, you'll likely use it for that purpose. In addition, when dying cloth with local gathered flowers, onion skins, polkweed berries, walnut hulls, then urine acts as a mordant to fix the dye and keep it from washing out. Feces doesn't decay well when mixed with urine. A community would carefully manage the placement of feces to digest it naturally. It takes two years with lots of careful treatment and plant waster to safely compost human waste. It's not a good idea to put it into a garden, nor use cat or dog feces. All of that results in dangerous transmission of disease. If fecal matter is not carefully managed, then it leaks into the water table. That means it will poison your locally dug wells. Wells will be the first organized community activity. The best way, but a thankless task, is to have someone in the neighborhood come by and collect it and cart it off to a far away field where it is processed. Otherwise the neighbors will bury it in their backyards and then you have say 20 families with 20 chances to pollute the well or crops. Bad idea. Likewise, though you didn't ask, a special field is made for burials. It also is carefully chosen to be far away, but respectfully close enough to visit. If not, then the same issues occur for water contamination. I won't go into it, but the ground can get very hard to dig in Winter. This should concern a lot of community leaders post-collapse. In addition, a lot of children will be parentless and need support. In history, the death of a parent doomed that next generation. |

From the studies done by volunteers and microbiologists working with the team, they discovered that some coliform bacteria got into the well, even when a deep well versus a shallow point well. For those who don't know, a shallow point is a simple to dig well usually less than 15 feet deep, and can be constructed by one person with about $150 (US dollars) in parts. A deep well on the other hand is a community activity, probably 10-15 people helping, and can also be done cheaply using the Baptist Well Drilling Method. [link to www.drillyourownwell.com] Shallow point well When you hammer down on the pipe, use a threaded cap to prevent buggering up the threads. The best way is to filter your well water since you don't know what your neighbors are doing in regards to their sanitation or their livestock. The cheapest solution with a 97% accuracy rating is a Biosand filter. [link to www.biosandfilter.org] Costs to build it from local materials is less than $50 (US dollars). Oh yeah, advice is free. Doesn't mean it gets listened to. My experience is it doesn't get listened to at all, since everyone thinks they know what's best for them. |
