Re: The man that sold the world?
Kurt listened to all the 70's stuff because he grew up in the 70's, by singing their songs, he paid homage. The Cars also rocked massively and still do. Rip Ben.

Re: The man that sold the world?
I always took it to be a deep conversation between Bowie and himself, in which he was arguing a specific point.

If I got the correct meaning, then on some level, when he wrote the song, he felt that he was a bit of a sham. A common feeling for the wildly successful, since they all know on some level that their work isn't that much better than those that are also good, but who don't make it.

He was showing a conversation between that "dark" part of himself that "Sold the World" on the idea that he was worth something. The "real" part of him had thought that part was dead and gone, but there he was.

"I thought that you died long ago..."

"Oh, no, not me. I never lost control..."

Just one take on it. A lot of people think it means something very different and Bowie hasn't said, as far as I know.

Your asking a few different questions. But say every time you hear a familar song that wasn't written to be a commercial selling something that is on tv selling something. Well yes, by definition the artist was paid a royalty.

Is everyone sold or does that method sell the product to everyone? Not always, it backfires when you know the artist made a lot of money selling the song (for some fans)

Can everyone be sold something on some level, that is a big question. If you're aware something is being pushed on you, and you are the type of person who doesn't like that well, you probably can't be sold as easy (or bought rather)
