Are you ready for under-four hour air travel to anywhere in the world?
To the dismay of weary business travelers the world over, the idea of being able to get from one point on Earth to an entirely different point within four hours seems like either science fiction or the result of a particularly unambitious travel itinerary. But that may be about to change, with a British company announcing that it has successfully completed tests for a new rocket propulsion system that significantly changes consumer air travel – or, at least, the amount of time a consumer spends in the air – forever.

Reaction Engines has created a new type of jet engine that “breathes” air, something that allows the aircraft to move at speeds that Reaction claims are five times the speed of sound. Developed over a 20-year period, Reaction’s SABRE – which stands for Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine – can operate in two modes: “air-breathing” and “rocket,” a dual system that is being described as a “major breakthrough in propulsion worldwide.”

How is this new? They had hybrid engines in the 50's how do you think the SR-71 flew around the globe so quickly?

Jeez, you guys are hard to impress.

Obviously anything on a commercial jet will be decades behind military hardware, but it's still neat to see it come to the civilian sector.

People will complain about the sonic booms this will create. Just like the Concorde it will only allowed to fly this fast over oceans, so it will take more than 4 hours.

Unfortunately, you're exactly right. The title of the thread should be, "Are you ready to read about more suppressed technology that we should have already been using for decades?"

Damn.... I near an airport too, hear planes flying overhead all the time.

I sure hope I move before this technology becomes common, in case they decided to let them fly that fast in residential areas...

rule britannia!

this was on the uk news a couple of weeks ago. looks like a replacement for concorde which was dumped by that twat blair. grrr

i was hoping to save up and go on concorde one day. hey ho

london to sydney in 4 hours? yes please

not sure how it will work when its not possible to fly the majority of the route over water though. i suppose coz its SO fast, it will counteract having to go the 'long way' round

itll be at least 10 years though, apparently

The air-breathing mode can be used until the engine has reached over 5 times the speed of sound and an altitude of 25 kilometres which is 20% of the speed and 20% of the altitude needed to reach orbit. The remaining 80% can be achieved using the SABRE engines in rocket mode.

i doubt you will hear the booms mutch at 25km altitude and above

The topic of this thread reminded me of a Richard Branson (Virgin) interview that I saw a few years ago. Havent found the video yet, but here is a report on the technology he was talking about.

“We've been working on a program that can go even farther with cleaner fuels. It could be the cleanest form of air travel there is,” said Branson. “We're also trying to develop aircraft that will take you from L.A. to Australia in half and hour—literally whisk you up outside the Earth's atmosphere and down again. It's going to take a few years. With our space travel program, we are trying to come up with the Concorde of the future. Our space flights will leave from the Mojave Desert in California, and also New Mexico. We'll pop people up from L.A. into space.”

We'll never have super sonic flights over the US. Going over oceans or complete barren waste lands like the Himalayas or the poles would definitely be good though.

SCRAM and RAM have been around for decades, it's about goddamn time we saw shit applied to civvie use.

What this does is give us a nice indication of the time gap for military to civilian trickle-down... and as anyone interested in aviation can see, it's a loooong time.

I wonder what amazing toys the military has today that we won't see for another 40 years.
