What does he grow up there? At 5000', where I've grown food, it was never really a problem, but the growing season has got to be short up there. I would venture a guess, but it's just as easy to ask.
Was the grass brought up as lawn clippings? It looks quite process if he collected it all himself. It's a clever idea. I would have stuck with the chicken wire, but the mulch would keep the ever-present wind off the soil, keeping it moist. Glad you showed us that.

could you start a thread about what grows an what doesnt in this area as im fairly new to the area.
ive built a greenhouse and this has worked great for extending the season
ive had successes with potatoes,beets,rye,lettuce
some bush tucker around here wild rose for hips,wild onions,
stinging nettle pine nuts and juniper berries also
my biggest problems have been wind and vermin like packrats,mice and chipmunks the ground here seems fairly fertile.
