I'll be throwing out most of my furniture when I move. It's not worth it to move that stuff, even though it's in good condition. And Craigslist is getting to risky.

Re: lost everything in sandy where to get nice cheap furniture and other stuff to help????
This is what people do where I live.

They cruise through several neighborhoods after 9 p.m. the evening before the trash pickup is scheduled in the neighborhoods the next morning.

This is how they find all sorts of still useable presentable furniture and other household goods (lamps, shelves, wastebaskets, etc.) sitting at the curb waiting for the garbage men to pick it up.

Whatever furniture they find that they like they get to take home for free.

There is nothing wrong about doing this, you'll know if the furniture you find is worth taking with you.

Many times all the furniture you find needs is a new "foot" on a sofa, slipcovers for couch cushions, resurfacing of a table, gluing of a desk drawer, or painting of legs and/or adding of chair pads for a set of kitchen chairs.

The real trick is to cruise middle class and upper class neighborhoods in suburban areas that are far from where Hurricane Sandy caused so much damage and hardship.

The next best thing is to hit the "moving sales" early on Sunday morning. get the local newspaper and look up garage sales/moving sales in the classified ads.

People tend to let go of any extra furniture they have when they are moving out of town. They cannot take everything they would like to take with them and that is your good luck.

Lastly, when hotels remodel you can often get really good deals on the older furniture that they are replacing.

I wish you good luck and happy hunting.

I know Hurricane Sandy was truly an especially devastating storm. I am sorry that you and your family have had to go through what must be a very challenging and extended (exhausting) period of time.

God bless you.

Re: lost everything in sandy where to get nice cheap furniture and other stuff to help????
I live on the other side of the country from you, but I have heard mention of a website called "freecycle". Apparently you can get tools, furniture, bicycles, and all sorts of stuff for free or very little money. A few days ago right on this Forum a poster said that he had been a window washer and basically supplied his entire business from Freecycle, even the ladders and squeegees! (It was on a thread about how to make money during this crappy Economy without working for someone else.)

I'm not sure if Freecycle is locked in to a certain area, or if people from all over the U.S. use it, but it's worth a shot to check it out!

If you are really without furniture, you might try going to Goodwill or one of the other similar organizations and after you explain your predicament they will give you a voucher for a certain amount to enable you to shop in their store at no charge. And don't forget that, in addition to furniture, they have clothing, kitchen appliances, plates/cups/silverware, bedding, books, etc.

You might even contact friends who haven't been affected by the storm and ask them if they have any furniture that they could "loan" you until you get back on your feet. Chances are they will, and they'll just GIVE it to you just to clear out their garage. I know I have a whole GARAGE full of furniture, but as I said, I'm on the other side of the country.

I am SO sorry for what you guys are going through, it must be overwhelming to try to deal with it, and from what I hear the government isn't coming through in the least for you. But the best plan is to just take little steps, one at a time, and eventually life will return to a somewhat "normal" flow. Good luck, and may God be with you. hf

First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan NJ. They are wonderful.
Also try any of the other churches in Manasquan. They are really trying to help and I don't think it will make a difference that you are from out of state.
If it does please let me know. I am from the area and NY'ers come every summer to the beach. Second home to all of you.

You might also try contacting churches, particularly the Latter Day Saints (Mormons). They have thrift stores called Deseret, and lots of OTHER organizations send people to THEM for help.

bump and 5 stars. This thread may provide some ideas for others who are affected by the storm too. I know it can be hard to think straight when you are in the middle of a disaster.

Craigslist, thrift stores have proven useful for me (free TV, fridge, tables from CL). Won't be the nicest quality but it'll do. Else you can improvise on some stuff (like tables).

You'd be amazed what you can get away with if you have the guts to do it. Rent a cube van and drive around to office buildings. Go to the reception desk and give some phony delivery slip you mocked up on your printer to the girl at the desk. Tell her you're picking up the old couch and delivering the new one for the lobby. Take the old couch and throw it into the truck and fuck off. By the time she figured out you wern't coming back you'd be long gone.

You could get some top quality beautiful leather stuff for your pad.

Take $400 - $500 to a rural farm community auction. Bring a truck. Get there early and let potential bidders know that you desperately need what you intend to bid on. Most people will bid light if you approach them ahead of time.

You should be able to fill a house with just a few hundred dollars if you go to small community estate auctions. Or put an ad in a rural newspaper. You'd be surprised how many people will chip in if they know you are sincere.

good luck! :-)

One more thing...very important. Pick a church or two way outside your area and dress up your kids/self. Get in touch with the pastor before the 11:00 am sermon and ASK the congregation for their help. Make a flyer if you have to and hand them out IN PERSON with real contact number...no voice mail.

They will help you, just ask.

You need to look at which tips seem like a "blue light"or out of the blue spontaneous idea to you. If you make a list and visualize a list and placei ton your refrigerator with magnets around it, I found great furniture and exactly what you list shows up for you.Habitat for Humanity has furniture some time.

Put a furniture list on local craigs list saying wanted such and such devastated but recovering Sandy experiencer needing furniture. There is someone moving out of the area giving up you can just take the whole furniture off their hands so they don't have to pay people to help them move it out to get rid of it. Say "need some furniture off your hands? Well I decided to stay but my furniture already took a hike or needs to..."hf

It is 100% free.....nothing is allowed to be sold or bought....only free....

You wouldn't beleive some of the treasures some people are willing to give away for free.

Also, you can post whatever it is that you are wanting to get for free, ie., furniture, bedding, clothes, etc. Just be very specific. Include sizes, et.

A friend of mine who is having a lot of financial difficulty was even able to get SEVERAL pounds of frozen meat on freecycle, (which is risky, I know - but sometimes being poor means being willing to take risks. Plus, it was in a very nice township and you have to go to a person's house to get their stuff - so there is a level of accountability there).

Good luck, OP.

Just think of all the thousands of homes abandoned - full of new furniture that were all cleared out and sent to the trash during the foreclosure frenzy.

That ought to make you sick about now.

Craigslist NYC free section. It does seem to be a disaster area, given the slim pickings. But keep an eye on it, there's good stuff out there-
