Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 20068093 United States 12/11/2012 03:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, December 11 (RIA Novosti) – The erupting Plosky Tolbachik volcano in Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula is spilling a record 1,200 metric tons of lava every second, local seismologists reported on Tuesday. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20068093 The 3,085-meter Plosky Tolbachik, which is part of a volcanic complex located 343 kilometers from the region's capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, erupted on November 27 for the first time in 36 years. “This year’s eruption is very powerful. During the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption in 1975, the volcano spilled on average 40 cubic meters of magma per second while at present its ‘productivity’ is about 400 cubic meters or 1,200 tons per second,” said Gennady Karpov, a deputy director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology under the Russian Academy of Sciences. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20068093 Now all I can do is wait for them to answer. I hope aren't too busy to answer. VEI has nothing to do with magma production, it is the explosive index, the power of the initial eruption But I read that it also has to do with amount. Though I realize it has to go pretty high into the stratosphere. We know it was a 4 in 1975, they say it is erupting pretty high, I think it said 6 thousand meters but not sure. That's why I have written the Alaska Observatory as another poster suggested. |

The volcano in question is capable of low end 6 eruption. It typical erupts in the 2 to 4understand range. |

This is customary event for the of Kamchatka. Welcome to Kamchatka! |
