INTERESTING QUESTION: At what exact moment was the "12-21-12" end date born? I mean who exactly takes claim for its discovery? i think its just a smoke screen because we really are at the brink but the governments arent sure how much longer we have... but that its probably only another few years. When the world doesn't end, my worst fear is that people stop preparing for a disaster. A whole lot of people who bought into this 2012 thing will feel stupid and they'll waste the food supplies that they purchased. Probably a lot of them don't eat rice and beans to begin with. Rather than waste that food, if they're not going to seriously prepare, then I hope that they'll donate it to a food bank, and it will go into the bellies of hungry children.

The best thing that could happen would be that scene in Arthur Clark's 2010 when people realize that there is life on other planets and how sacred life is in general. If we could see in our folly that we're all essentially the same, and we could laugh at ourselves with true mirth, then maybe we'd be more forgiving for other cultures and try to create positive ways of fostering peace.

Every day is a new one, and an opportunity to start anew. We don't have to wait for New Year's Day. Tomorrow could be the first real moment when we embraced life and lived life to the fullest. Much of that new life would be about creating things with our own hands, teaching others skills so they could too, and finding solutions to real problems.

What if, we'd simply back out of the Middle East, and let them solve their own problems. Let's worry more about fixing our own nation's issues with energy, education, renewing the land, creating long sustainable jobs, finding ways to support incentives for investment in our own nation versus taxes that help no one but only encourage government jobs with little oversight.

What if on Dec 22, 2012, you went up to the person who's angry with you and said, "You know, I messed up. I said some things that really hurt you. I wish we could repair this old friendship. It used to be very valuable. Let's start again."

What if on Dec 22, 2012, you decided to dig up much of that grass lawn that isn't doing you any good and costs you time and effort and gas to cut, and planted herbs, vegetables, fruit, nut trees? You planned it out as well as you could learn. You bought inexpensive seed and cheap tools. Then you asked for help working it (when it got warmer) from your friends and relatives and shared the bounty. Then you learned how to preserve it so you knew it was good safe food free from pesticides.

What if on Dec 22, 2012, you stopped watching pointless tv shows and instead decided to read those classic books of literature that you always intended? What if you decided to actually create some art by painting? What if you built something useful? What if you spent some time learning a skill from your friends and in return you taught them a skill?

What if on Dec 22, 2012 you remembered that you fell in love with someone? Their body and face changed and aged, but so did yours. What if you decided to see the person they used to be, the soul that is still inside them, not the shell on their exterior? What if you decided to stop spending money on clothes, jewelry, nail salons, hair appoitments, and instead exercised, ate right, and invested money in yourself and your partner? What if you decided to massage them three times a week just to treat them with kindness, respect, and affection?

Imagine a world where everyone did that. It would be a beautiful place.

Don't let popular culture take the lead in the way that you think OP.
