Re: I'm makin' my list, checkin' it twice, ready to bug-out with my rifle and rice...
Bugging out always makes me wonder... Where exactly is everyone going to go??? Do people actually think they'll be able to hit the packed roads and drive to some remote place? Don't get me wrong, I've got my preps and a bugout bag, but I'm planning on bugging in... For a while at least. Unless something happens that forces me to leave.
 Quoting: Hitokiri

I believe most will bug in, especially at first.

Not me. As soon as I know TSHTF, I'm gone. I can get to my camp with out hitting any highways or even any roads except for the last few kilometers. there are connecting off-road trails that go for hundreds of KMs in the direction I need to go. My Jeep is equiped for the journey. I have plenty of off-raod experience. My family will be in a good situation.
 Quoting: Wash

That's sweet! That's one of the reasons I bought a 4wd truck; so I can take the road less traveled. If I get stuck in that then it's mountain biking or hoofing it. The problem is I don't have anywhere to bug out to! I've got supplies, skills, and a tendency to help those in need, but nowhere to go. Maybe my sisters house... She lives on a small lake where not that many people live. I don't think I really want to run to the hills and live off the land... Yet.
 Quoting: Hitokiri

Depending on where you live (climate), you could start in a tent deep in the forest and build a decent shelter within a few days...a week. Keep at the insulating through the winter. In Spring (if the world has gone to shit) start builing a new stong shelter to live in.

It can be done by anyone with a little skill, knowledge and some tools.

When I was 15 me and 2 bufddies build a 2 level log shelter in a couple long days (might have been 3 or 4 days ?). enough room on the bottom for 2 beds, 1 bed on top. insulated with a ton of mud and moss. We went back to it for years when fishing in that area. I'd bet it's still standing (20 years later).
 Quoting: Wash

That's why I have a brand new tent in my supply closet. Plus tarps, rope, emergency tools, among other things. I guess I'd just rather bug in unless I have to bug out.

Seriously. Just to be on the safe side (better to be prepared for nothing than unprepared for something).

Make you prep check lists. Have your bug-out bags ready to go.

Firearms / snare wire / fishing supplies / hunting knives / axes / saws / rope / coleman stove / rice / beans / flour / sugar / salt / spices / seeds / pasta / canned goods / meats / warm cloths / blankets / matches / soap / tooth brush / TP / clean water / pots / pans / dishes / survival info suitable for your area / gas / stabilizer / compass /
there is plenty more you should/could have on your check list.

If you have a place to "escape to" be ready to get there.

Not meant to scare...just to prepare.

A disaster could strike anytime, anywhere.
 Quoting: Wash

Why does everyone insist on "bugging out" when you can much more easily "bug-in"? I can't think of anywhere I could go that would be better than my own house anyway. And my house is where all my stuff is at, so this way, I don't have to move everything. This late in the game, if you aren't living where you would "bug out" to, then I feel sorry for you.

I want to see these guys with BOBs actually live in the woods without basic camping gear. As an old fart doing bushcraft forever, I know I can build a warm shelter, but trying doing that in Winter. Good freaking luck.

I sincerely hope you make it, but with tons of people leaving en masse out of urban areas in a collapse...I don't see it. I have seriously studied the issue, way before it was considered cool back in the late seventies. It makes no sense whatsoever.

'Not saying you can't, but leaving in Winter on foot? You better expect serious frostbite, the debilitating kind. Try digging a snow shelter without a shovel. If you're packing any kind of camping gear and on foot, don't you think a mob of people will follow you, steal your gear, and make off with it. It makes me incredulous.

Try walking on foot from the Northeast part of the country, or anywhere along the Atlantic Seaboard. If you're packing a rifle and trying to walk into a rural town with it during a collapse, do you really think they locals will allow that to happen?

Re: I'm makin' my list, checkin' it twice, ready to bug-out with my rifle and rice...
your list seems excessive. take all your plurals and make them singular. and eliminate some.

no one thinks about gas....so you want to get to a safe place? you're only going to get as far as your gas goes, which is as far as anyone's gas will go, which means wherever you run out of gas is not going to be far enough away from the panicking masses. not only that but once your vehicle is loaded up and you run out of gas, not only can you NOT hide your vehicle and are essentially a sitting duck, but you now have a bunch of shit you can't carry. have a bike and tire repair kit. do not take more than you can carry.

toilet paper: learn how to go without and use whatever resource is available, like water or leaves. consider that toilet paper not only goes quickly and you WILL run out, but it is susceptible to water. last thing you need is a BOB full of soggy TP, eh?

pasta...are you fucking kidding me? why do people want this shit, like OMG stock up on sugar NOW!!! stock up on pasta! order your chinese food and pizza NOW! drop the flour, sugar, spices, pasta, meat (seriously...your going to carry some steaks in your BOB?), clean water (very heavy & bulky, be prepared to filter or do cachement), coleman stove (forget it, if you can't make a fire and cook on it, you're doomed the second your gas runs out...also, coleman stove = bulky, hard to carry), canned goods, HUH? very heavy and impractical. matches GET WET, do not bring matches, bring lighters.

guns....make noise, noise draws attention, makes you a target. ya'll act like you've never seen a zombie movie. axes....NO....one hatchet is sufficient. axes (plural, LOL!) are HEAVY and not easy to carry, FYI.

think, efficiency:

lighters
knife
compass
warm clothing/insulating blanket
plant identification book or knowledge
whetstone
ONE cooking pot, doubles as a pan
one spoon, no fork
one large cup to double as a bowl/plate

THOSE are the absolute basics. bug out bag means BAG, not SUV or motor home. anyone who has actually LIVED out of a BOB and had to survive that way can tell you how important it is to NOT overload on bullshit, and most of what you think you can't live without, you can.

Yeah Wash, you make some good posts. I've been around for awhile and I recognize your name. I know many folks in the prepping community, and BOBs are intended as a last resort, and usually specific to say leaving a hurricane disaster zone for a place away from the impact area. Or they were recommended for petroleum workers to bug out from 3rd world nations that were being run by military dictators. So basically you were paying bribes to bug out and cross borders and had the basic necessities.

Now military folks have always been taught SERE training, but that was to get to a safe zone as well, and to evacuate and live off the land minimally and steal what you needed, and mostly to get back in 3-7 days. It wasn't to live out of a BOB.

There's tons of videos on the ideal BOB. Just type in SHTF in youtube. It's been innundated with those kinds of videos versus say a practical one on canning, digging a shelter supported by a skeleton of sticks, building a debris hut, basic orienteering (compass use), etc.

I honestly think that making a BOB and bugging out has a very slim possibility of success. Most people are going to hesitate to bite the bullet and leave. If you dally even an instant, then what you've done is pack up a nifty bag of goodies for the local mob to take from you.

If you got family or property located somewhere out in the boonies then go there, otherwise stay where you are because you'll have better chance surviving with a roof over your head than on the open road or in the woods.

My backyard is the woods (northern Ont.) and it's the last place I would go simply because to survive you need community. There's a few lone-wolves that might make it in the wilderness but they are few and far between. If you are reading this then you are most likely not one of them.

It could help me get set up in the woods if nessesary, but not really intended for that purpose. Really its more than a bag. It's more like a few bags...a Jeep...2 hounds...and my family. My "stuff" is organized and ready to go in minutes.

when it comes to fire starting, redundancy is the name of the game, especially in winter. I keep a fire steel on my belt at all times. every jacket/coat has matches and lighters. my car and pack have cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly. i've got some mini fire starting logs in the car. anyone half awake knows these are not normal times.....

Fear monger. There's a secret war on for sure, but if enough people just start praying for it not to happen, it won't. BEsides, where ya gonna go? If there's trouble enough to cause people to run, that would probably mean that They are going to be out there trying to stop them. Anybody who runs, will probably be running straight into a trap. Therefore, stand your ground. Use your preps at home. It is never a waste to have emergency supplies. But don't run, people. They WANT you to. You'll be ID'd as a trouble-maker by the Police State if they find you out running around with a BOB and a gun. An instant target for arrest and detention. This is what they want. This OP is an agent provocateur of sorts.

Re: I'm makin' my list, checkin' it twice, ready to bug-out with my rifle and rice...
I keep baggies of dryer lint for fire starter. Bugging out to a camp, if you can get there, is only as good as your supplies last. How many have the skills to hunt and, you need more than meat so, how many can garden? Will you also have those supplies on hand? Lots to think about. You probably won't be able to go it alone but deciding who to trust will be a life or death decision.

OP destroy your rifle and don't take any food with you. For Jesus is all you need and he will provide for all of your needs

LOL...good one! Wouldn't that be nice if we could 'pretend' away all of our mortal needs.

A disaster could strike anytime, anywhere.

seeds? stayin in the planted field for months? without being
noticed by the hordes?

where you will go with your some days usefull BOB by feet?
down the road singing umbaya? or by the forest where tens
or hundreds hungry rifles expect targets like you to eat?

there is *Only One* way to survive when TSHTF..

Create Communities of *Same Spirit* guys, in high places
fortified already from nature (you can find if you know
where to look)
where you can easy and fast fortified them with walls
from surround trees with at least one source of water inside
the walls. You need a lot of work and when the SHTF find you
you must be already done.

DONT build walls from now only the last days before.
Every work bust be invisible even from air.

Dont bother loosing time trying to save the *everything normal* idiots before or when shtf hapens even if they are
close friends. They will never understand and may they kill
you with their stupidity and their wrong acts in the wrong time. Let them have what they wanted and what they deserve.

Prepair your fort with the right people, make meetings trying to be one team one spirit, DONT TALK TO OTHERS what
you are doing, Leave out wifes or kids if they talk too much, and start from now because you had to, from yesterday.

UPS is delivering a hand held cb and wilson antenna today for my bug out vehicle. Do you think those bullet proof guard shacks are going to sit in warehouses forever and gather dust?

Done and done. My only problem is that if the situation comes that we have no power/no access to my car working than it will be one hellish bike ride with the family/bob to the other location. By vehicle it is 3 hours, but if we have to do it by foot or me peddling my ass there, we are looking at almost a week, considering kids will be in tow. Not fun when the weather is getting colder.
