Re: I can tell you why so many people despise "preppers"
i'll bite. you are right op. I prep for doom and I may be like you describe. But try to see the world from my perspective.

lets hit the bullet points...
looking forward to gun violence in a mad max setting- it's cultural, look at the movies, the music, the video games it's in our faces all the time. gun violence. If a person plays call of duty all day long, they enjoy shooting people with guns. They enjoy it a lot. It goes back to the wild west mythology. Americans especially.

psychotic tendancies, possible serial killer- I don't really see how buying dehydrated food and camping gear equates to all that. The world is full of psychos. Most of the politicians and CEO's seem to have those traits and it got them ahead of the sheep didn't it. Some people want to be wolves. It's human nature.

looking down on others, no compassion- I dunno if you had a charmed life but to many people the world is full of assholes, selfish, materialistic nasty examples of the human condition. There are good and bad people of course and it depends on the individual experiences. If you have a shit life where everyone is a dick to you all the time you may see how it gets that way.

lol "it's happening soon", no, it's been happening since 2008 or earlier. People who say "no it isn't" don't pay attention to the natural disasters, wars, conspiracies and agendas. They say "no it isn't" because they are oblivious to their surroundings. Man it's like i'm saying the world is round and your saying no it isn't it's flat, will nothing get through to you?! flat flat flat! believe whatever you want. whatever.

whatever

Re: I can tell you why so many people despise "preppers"
Because so-called "preppers" despise everyone else and look forward to the day they can get away with a shootout over a can of beans. The attitude of the preppers is what gets them disliked: they are psychos in the making, many who look forward to the time they can get away with being a serial killer. They look down upon others as scum to kill when the time is right, instead of looking at the world with compassion. They care for no one. And they tend to keep repeating the mantra, "It's happening soon," all with a wry smile on their face, showing how much they look forward to the destruction of the world, and if people say "no it isn't," they act so stuck up about being "awake" that no one can get through to them.

They are as low as they come.

Nicely done. You've taken over the lead for the dumbest thing I've read all day.

This post: Thread: Why Are Preppers Hated So Much? is now in second place.

Well done to you as well, little sheep.

Re: I can tell you why so many people despise "preppers"
Hey, u wanna waste your resources on your neighbors, thats on you.

Lets play Devils advocate here.

You give your neighbor a few cans of that stew. He gives you some antibiotics ( which you should already have but I digress) in return ans its a fair trade. What happens when his stew runs out and you've no need for antibiotics? You just gonna feed him and his family? Gonna take food out of your own families mouths to feed someone elses when that man didnt even care enuff himself??

You are far too nice and youll pay for it in the end. Believe me when I tell you, your neighbors will not be friendly after a few days of hunger. Theyll be looming for the moment to kill you and take your preps.

Youve gotta realize, even though Im prepped to the hilt, there will be peeps like me who will be wolves in sheeps clothing....looking to TAKE whats yours, by force.

The difference being that I love MY family far more than I love the neighbors family. My JOB as a husband and father is to take care of my blood first. Everyone else be dammed.

Of course, this is only my feelings on the subject.

:9teen: Sooo, knowing that trouble is coming, I take it that you are stocking up on food to give away to your neighbours who could have easily afforded to buy some extra... but didn't.
 Quoting: Judethz

So much claim for "trouble coming" turns out to be BS, and preppers soon look to the newest "trouble coming." In other words, they prove themselves to be anything but awake with such a record of false doom.

But even if many knew something was coming, many can't do anything to "prep" anyway. The prepper ideology ignores the plight of the poor who can barely afford to live with the work they have. Again, the Ayn Rand Satanic selfishness manifests itself in the movement time and time again.

Wanted to add one thing here.

Someone mentioned earlier about preppers and their silver bars.

Ive been prepping for like 6 years now and I cannot for the life of me figure out why any prepper would bother hoarding silver/gold. Both will become worthless when compared to salt, coffee, flour, seeds, guns, ammo, hell...even toilet paper will be more valueable.

If someone offered me a gold coin for some rice in a shtf scenario, Id piss myself laughing!

If'n ya can't eat it, shoot it, or drink it, it is worthless! Like do peeps think there'll be any sort of world economy during a global event!?

Would any prepper anywhere bother bartering for gold/silver?? Think of the available gold if say 3 billion people died from some mass event. Supply and demand would be skewed and to be honest...gold is not a commodity thats in short supply. Imagine the shtf...first stop...a jewelry store to snatch all the gold. Owner doesnt wanna give it to you? I spend about one cent worth of a quick lead injection and take what I want.

I feel like many preppers gloss over the human condition aspects of a shtf scenario. If you are not prepared to kill at a moments notice for whatever you may need, you are not a prepper, you are just a fool...who will be parted from their "gold" fairly quickly by someone like me.

Most of those who have purchased PMs have also already purchased food/water/other supplies they believe they need. I will not disagree that food/meds/water/tobacco/alcohol etc will be easily traded goods, however PMs have been a store of wealth for literally centuries.

I'm not saying that if TSHTF that they will be accepted as currency immediately. I'm saying that history has shown that they will eventually be a better store of wealth than a bunch of FRNs in your safe.

I suppose you have a point...to a point. I mean, why waste the money on one ounce of gold at a $1600 charge when that same $1600 will by you a pallet of freeze dried food for four people to survive for a year on???????

Can you claim one ounce of gold will be worth anywhere near that amount even a few years after a cataclysm? So for every ounce of gold, you give up a years worth of food in the hopes that one day it'll maybe be worth what you paid for it lol??

Add to that...gold can be panned out of almost any creek bed anywhere so why pay for it by spending a years worth of food for your family on a single ounce??

Doesnt it make far more sense to spend the $1600 on a pallet of food and then trade that for the gold AFTER tshtf? Think....if I were hungry and I had a gold rolex to trade...I would trade it for a few cans of soup...or die. Then, youve got an ounce or better of gold for a few bucks then rather than a buncha bucks now.

No...gold nor silver will be worth anything of any real value for generations providing theres an Earthwide cataclysm...and for sure it will never reach the inflated price it is now.

Common sense goes a long way.

For one, an ounce of gold is much easier to store than a pallet of freeze dried food. It's much easier to carry if you have to bug out, as well.

I won't claim that one ounce of gold will be worth $1600 again. I will claim that one ounce of gold will be worth more than 16 one-hundred dollar FRNs if TSHTF.

Again, I believe that most who buy PMs have already bought what they feel they need in terms of supplies. They feel that PMs are a better place to store their wealth than FRNs or several pallets of freeze dries food.

I wouldn't count on panning an ounce of gold out of "any creek bed anywhere" either. If it was that easy, we'd all be rich.

Not all despise everyone else. Not all are psycho's. It does attract those types, just as non preppers attract the dumb and lazy types.
Even the Government(FEMA), says you should prep for an emergency or natural disaster.

As for compassion, leaches and moochers will receive none, those who are willing to help rebuild after TSHTF, will receive help and assistance, if such is available.
As many expect resources to be tight, many plan on not sharing.
That is one choice, Another is to reach out and help as many as possible, while increasing resources. Each plan has its challenges.
If TSHTF, Mad Dogs and Anarchists may have to be defended against. If you would fail to defend your own you family, then you are worst than those who would attack you.

Anyone who is smart does not "long" for such a time, but many see it as inevitable.

wheres the logic to why gold would be worth more than the food? if civilization collapses, your not gonna be thinking "i sure am hungry, but i gotta get me some bling." i can understand if you do already have everything else in order (food, water, etc), but i only see gold being valuable to technological(attempts to fix electronics) and superficial people at first. its value will definitely shoot up in the long run, but if you survive even for a short period of time, theres gonna be gold aplenty EVERYWHERE you look. preppers to non-preppers ratio, theres gonna be a lot of houses to raid, i'd guess 1/4 family houses would have atleast some PM in it. but the food won't be easy to find. you'd be better spending the $1600 to expand your storage capacity and buy more food and medical supplies.

Society will reestablish itself with trade and barter, then with commerce(gold and silver). The first will happen within months, commerce within a year or two.
So if you survive and desire to have luxuries when commerce restarts, then gold and silver will be required.

"Real" preppers may be different, but I know what OP is talking about. I've met a few wannabes, and they are obnoxious in the extreme. They practically salivate at the thought that they will be well-stocked while their fellow humans are starving. Like I said, I doubt these are the "real" preppers.

I will concede that gold will be essentially worthless shortly after a full SHTF scenario. People aren't buying PMs to buy shit at the corner store the day after Armageddon. People who buy PMs have hope that society will rebuild. If/when that happens, PMs will have value again.

Why do people think that somehow PMs will magically become forever completely worthless after centuries of consistently having value?

Re: I can tell you why so many people despise "preppers"
It might be good not to over-generalize.
I've been prepping for over a year but I own no
weapons aside from a BB gun and I'd never
aim it at a person.
Most preppers just want to survive to see
another day, at least that's how it is around here.
We prep for winter storms or the occasional power
outage.
 Quoting: Stand!

Additionally, we are aware that many (if not most) of our neighbors are less prepared than we are to some degree. When TSHTF, we will be able to offer them help a LONG time before the government gets off its' collective ass to render any measurable assistance. Look at the survivors of Sandy. Some STILL don't have electricity over a month later, and we saw dumpster diving within a day or two. Would you rather depend on a neighbor or a dumpster? Better yet, why not stock some food and water so that you don't even HAVE to make that decision?

 Quoting: Eggcellent

I must ask this of you:

Why are you prepping so you can save your neighbors?? While commendable, its pure folly to do so and as a prepper, you know that.

Rule number ONE of prepping is to tell nobody...especially a neighbor lol. So you waste your extra money on freeze dried food and ammo forgoing a new car or roof for your house in the process....while your non prepping neighbor spends his extra cash on a Beemer and his roof is brand new. Then, you decide thats okay and will feed him and his while taking it from your own family??

I am not my brothers keeper. Idc if a 5 year old girl came to my door starving while holding a box full of puppies. During a shtf scenario, I kill her and eat the dogs and sleep just fine afterwards.

Prepping to help neighbors who dont care if you die today? Nah, I'll pass because in reality...your neighbor will covet what youve managed to prep and theyll surely kill you to keep your preps for themselves and if you think otherwise, you are wrong.

I beg to differ on your logic. Any civvy that decided trying a 15 year vet of the Navy is a good idea, will be shot 500 yards before his 12 gauge is in range.

Never underestimate a serviceman schooled in shooting a Colt M-16 and Bushmaster .50 cal. Thats where most will fall short. Just because you have a weapon or a hundred people, you are not gauranteed success...especially against someone trained by the government in how to kill people.

No, there will be no lynchings of this prepper unless the ational Gaurd comes to town and even then Im taking some with me. As a civvy, you have very little idea in what ONE trained killer can do to ordinary folk lol.

My object when it comes to my shelter...is make it too costly to even try to come near it. If a group of ten people try to attack and I kill half by the time theyre 500 yards out...do ya think the other 5 are gonna keep coming? Doubtful.

Doesnt mean someone cant get in a lucky shot, but as a serviceman..or ex serviceman, I gaurantee it wont be some civilian.

Id also like to point out that you are wrong about community policing the community. Fact is, depending on the severity of the crisis, those with the most powerful guns run shit...period.

Now..most police departments keep some ar's handy, but mostly its just shotguns and 9mm pistols. I bet most rural police departments have about 15 cops or so. Tell me...do you think those cops are gonna put their lives on the line when they dont have to or will they protect their own families? Hmmm...

Add to that...anyone trained at all with a .50 cal will make any police department a non-issue pretty quickly. I shot a cj7 jeep at 900 yards while training in Afghanistan like 10 years ago. At that distance, the bullet went through the whole engine block and through the back end.
One Uranium tipped bullet will go through three engine blocks at point blank range. Tell me...which of you civvies is going to come hang me?

And its not just me. Serious preppers have all kinds of mounted .50 cals on vehicles, they have grenades, ar-15's, and they PRACTICE with them weekly. Civvies just buy a .22 or 12 gauge and think thats gonna mean something.

It will be lone wolfs like me that will survive because I have no scruples. Im hungry and your three year old has an apple....im killing all of you and eating the apple. Zero hesitation at all. If you arent thinking along the same lines, you are just saving things so people like me can find you, lure you in with kindness, then kill you and yours and take your shit.

Best start thinking along those lines because there are alot of us out here who dgaf about you or your family and WILL be looking to make whats yours....ours.

Survival of the fittest my friend, and for now, Im more fit than most.

Your right, police won't do anything. For a while you and your big gun might have an advantage.
Lone wolves, won't last long though. You can not grow food, find water, rest, provide for winter, and be on guard 24/7, all by yourself and survive for long.
Survival will be of the fittest Groups of people, not Lone wolves.

Re: I can tell you why so many people despise "preppers"
Theres the flaw in your logic...you think you know everything. Lemme clue you in:

Look at the Blackhawk Down scenario. Just a few trained, INJURED, serviceman took down 50 trained killers, each with an ak.

There are countless stories in history as well which describe the carnage one pissed off serviceman can do. Lookit every purple heart winners story or Medal of Honor recipients story...all involve winning against tremendous odds. Now, take those same people out of a foreign war zone and plop them into the crumbling of society scenario vs Jon and Jane Citizen and see hiw the kill numbers multiply.

You assume people will somehow come together and share things and sing Kumbaya or some shit. No...almost all people will be for themselves when the store shelves are empty. Hell...most are for themselves now, why would putting them in danger somehow make them change that thought.

Yes, I can defend 360 degrees easily in the middle of a field which is 3600x2000 yards with zero trees in the way. A .223 in the hands of a non trained civvy might be 300 yards, but more like 200 i feel. A shotgun is good to about 100 yards. A .308 is good to about 4-500 yds with an avid hunter shooting it.

I have markers for every hundred yards of distance marked on all sides. I have been trained for over a decade by the US Government on how to properly use a .50 cal in combat situations. Meaning that a group of say 200 people might make it within 500 yards of my spot, but noone would last beyond that.
I realize thats my own personal story and doesnt fit with everyone, but dont stand there and tell me something is impossible because unless you've been in a firefight at 2am in the middle of a desert with only 15 of your buddies against a hundred pissed off terrorists...and win without any losses, you have no leg to stand on.

Lmao...any civvy lynching squad is gonna get exactly what they're looking for should they ever come looking. Dont be so complacent....theres alot of my "types"out there and i really have a hard time believing anyone will play police in a time where a can of beans will get you shot. Who would apply for such a job lol.

Just remember, Rambo, there are plenty of trained soldiers that won't share your "kill a 3 year old and their family for an apple" mentality.

The lynching squad coming for you will have some of them in it... are you honestly saying you think you are the best of the best and there is literally no other person (or group of people in this case) in the world that could take you? I'm not trying to say you're weak or that you wouldn't be able to take down most sieges on your property, but you're delusional if you actually think you're as invincible as you sound like you think you are.

Lynched by WHOM though? I mean, yes, if tshtf, all bets are off for me. Tell me though, how exactly will anyone actually KNOW Im killing people? If they are dead, who will there be to tell in the first place.

The point Im making is that most preppers are like fans of sports teams...bandwagon jumpers. They buy some food. They buy a few guns. They store some water, then think its done lol.

If you arent training with a weapon every week, you will die. If you arent constantly prepping for different scenarios, you will die. If you just dismiss my claims, you will die.

It was me that said Id take that 3 yr old out...its whole family too if I were starving. Whos life is more important to me...mine or a family of strangers? Your stupid logic is exactly why lone wolves will long outlast stupid people and their inherent need to somehow be nice in times of crisis.

You be nice and help out everyone else, I'll be that person that lets you help me, then I'll put one in your head the first chance I get....as will many many others.
