People - I understand the whole unions raised wages and benefits deal. I get it. The law passed does not get rid of unions. It simply gives people a choice of whether they want to work under a union contract or not. Before the law, you had to be a union member to even get a job with a company that had a union contract. In other words, non-union members need not apply.

And in today's economy, the argument that employers will now stick it to workers is off base. Employers today have a choice, that they have been exercising freely: They move the jobs outside of the US.

Unions had their place when there were NO worker protection laws on the books, but their time has passed. I watched as union contracts destroyed the US Steel industry. Hostess is just the most recent example.

Employers today have to compete with employers who make similar products offshore. If all was fair, the US government would tarriff the hell out of foreign goods to level the field for environmental laws we have but a foreign country does not, wage and benefit laws, etc. But they don't.

And frankly, being forced to join an "interst" group in order to even have a shot at working is not in the spirit of our Constitutional Freedoms. That "join or don't work" model has been tried before - unless you were a member of the Nazi party in Germany, you were pretty much out of the running for any kind of decent job.

By the way, the "Nazi Party" as we call it, was called the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei in Germany. That translates into the National Socialist German Workers' Party. A SOCIALIST LABOR organization. The party protested and engaged in violent acts when anything interfered with their interests. Sound familiar?

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Unless you are one of the 1%, here's the dumbed down version of why they serve a purpose.

You may choose not to be a part of one, but they do help protect those that can't stand up for themselves and their mere existence keeps many others from abusing their employees in the workplace.

I've read your posts and most of the links, but I've still found no answer as to why it's ok to force someone to join a union and pay dues.

I worked at public agency in CA where all the heavy equipment mechanics were in the SEIU. These were your card carrying NRA members and registered republicans. You wouldn't get to finish calling them a libtard commie to their face because of the new fat lip you'd be sportin before you were done.

I don't recall too many of them bitching about the union because come contract time, all the management people they had to negotiate with, who weren't in a union, were the libtard commies who had never done a real day's work in their lives.

So it doesn't work the same everywhere if you've actually been there.

That is a good point, I see it.

What has happened is the majority of the workers voted to Unionize and subsequently, it's a shop with collective bargaining. If anyone does not belong to the shop, it tends to "bust" the union. Just think of the word Union.

Someone just pointed out to me here at work (non union shop btw) that this RTW thing may have the opposite effect as the one intended, it may make the Unions have to earn their keep so people want them!

Well then it seems that the burden of proving their value lies with the unions. If they were so beneficial, no one would even think twice. They would run to the unions without question.

The simple fact that they feel they should be able to force anyone to join their rolls makes me dubious of their worth.

why doe they only have votes to join unions, but never have votes to kick them out?

Actually I've worked for companies that voted out unions but then voted in new ones.

By no means am I saying I even really like them, what I'm saying is sure as shit, our already declining standard of living will decline further and faster.

Lets say your a corporation with shareholders and you have the option to reduce expenses and increase revenue by lowering wages and benefits with nothing in the way of stopping you, what do you do?

These unions all started protesting just recently. I can think of 5 union backed strikes in the past month and a half right off the top of my head.
