In June 2011, an steroid estimated about 30 feet in size (2011 MD) passed by Earth and missed a direct hit by only 7,500 miles. An even closer encounter occurred earlier in 2011 when another small asteroid missed Earth by just 3,400 miles. [link to www.washingtonpost.com] |

The resolution of the radar images is as fine as 7.5 m, providing a very detailed model of Toutatis' shape and spin state. The Chinese lunar probe Chang'e 2 departed from the SunEarth L2 point on April 15, 2012 and is en route to the asteroid. The spacecraft is expected to make a flyby of Toutatis on December 13, 2012, at a distance of a few hundred kilometers and at a relative velocity of 10.7 km/s, when Toutatis is near closest approach most of us will not be alive for the next time [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12786780 Kinda scary timing of these two events. X-37B gonna piggy back on this one for a very long long trip? I don't think this asteroid has enough mass to capture a space craft. I could be wrong though. Fuck Yea! |
