This seems to be related to widespread earth changes. That is one of a few logical explanations for the recent frequency.
Quoting: WTFRLY Problem is, these gas pipelines are rated for only 40 years, and many, many across the nation are aged 40-50 years now. Most of the gas lines run under neighborhoods now, so there is no way to fix or update them.
