Cliff deal hard to reach before Christmas
By Robert Schroeder WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- A deal to avoid the fiscal cliff of spending cuts and tax increases will be difficult to reach before Christmas, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday. Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Reid said if a deal gets done "we can do things very quickly" to get it through the Senate. But he said the only thing standing in the way of a deal is Republicans' insistence on extending Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy.

At least going home stops further legitimizing of increasing debt and obligation for the public.

House Republican leaders slammed President Barack Obama's fiscal cliff plan again Wednesday morning, pledging that the GOP conference would remain in Washington through Christmas in order to get a deal.

Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor doubled down on their calls for President Barack Obama to put specific spending cuts on the table.

"It's mainly tax hikes," Boehner said of the White House's plan.

"The President is walking us ever slowly to the cliff," Cantor added. "We're going to stay here right up until Christmas, through the time and period before the new year."

The pair reportedly delivered a similar message to the Republican House conference earlier Wednesday, telling GOP members to prepare to stay in Washington, D.C., over the winter holiday break.

The Republican leadership's message follows a new set of offers on the fiscal cliff deal. Earlier this week, the White House presented House Republicans with a new offer that reportedly reduced its call for new revenue to $1.4 trillion, down from the initial ask of $1.6 billion. In what appears to be a tactical maneuver , the new White House plan also included a call for corporate tax reform.

In an apparent response to the offer, Boehner gave a speech on the House floor Tuesday demanding that the President provide more specifics on spending cuts. Last night, the Speaker's office said that House Republicans responded with a counter-offer, but declined to give specifics on what the offer entails.

For now, however, it appears as though both parties remain far apart on revenue. But the channels of communication are still open. Boehner confirmed Wednesday that he and the president spoke by phone last night and had a "frank conversation about just how far apart we are."

Driven by growing concerns that House GOP leaders will give in to raising tax rates, grassroots conservatives are ramping up pressure on Republicans to block any deal on the fiscal cliff.

More than 100 conservative leaders — including Santorum megadonor Foster Friess, RedState editor Erick Erickson, Phyllis Schafly, longtime GOP activist Morton Blackwell, and others — banded together Wednesday to send an open letter warning Republican members of Congress against voting for any compromise on the fiscal cliff.

"You have a mandate to fight for conservative principles that is arguably much broader than the one that narrowly reelected President Barack Obama claims to have for his leftist agenda," the letter states. "Nevertheless, you are already being pressured to abandon the principles voters elected you to uphold."

The letter then makes it clear what will happen to Republicans who compromise:

"And if Republicans cave in now, when it really counts, next time you will be weaker, because your conservative base will be outraged. Many who worked hard to elect you in the past will never lift a finger for you again...

"Let us also remind you that a great many potent conservative organizations and millions of conservative and liberty-loving voters do not believe in the divine right of incumbents to be re-nominated. Conservatives know how to recruit and support candidates.

The warning underscores the significant obstacles House Republican leaders face in reaching a compromise with the White House on the fiscal cliff. Facing a divided caucus, it is unclear if the GOP leadership can drown out its vocal far-right faction and cobble together enough votes to pass a bill that gives in to Democrats' demands to raise tax rates on the top 2 percent of earners.

And this letter may have made that task a lot harder.
