Refineries cut production to protect gasoline profits

Reuters News Service

NEW YORK - Oil refiners CUT fuel production in some states this week to counter slipping PROFIT margins, drawing fire from critics already incensed by soaring gasoline prices and Big Oil's recent record profits.

San Antonio-based Valero Energy Corp., the nation's largest fuel producer, said Tuesday it SLOWED output from its refinery in Ohio by more than 10 percent for economic reasons, even as the company announced its 10th straight quarter of record earnings.

Earlier in the week, British energy giant BP slashed fuel production from its refinery in Whiting, Ind., by 10 to 15 percent because of lower PROFIT margins in the region, market sources said. BP declined to comment.

U.S. gasoline prices averaged $2.34 a gallon Tuesday, nearly 50 cents higher than a year ago.

Oil refiners traditionally slow fuel production when profit margins fall into the red — something that happens when the cost of crude rises too high relative to the selling price of gasoline and heating oil.

The National Petrochemical and Refiners Association, which represents several U.S. oil companies, said the slowdown by some refiners is not a threat to the nation's supply and should be seen as a normal seasonal variation.

"Inventories in that part of the country are high and pipelines are full," the association said in a prepared statement.

Politicians and consumer groups set off a fresh wave of calls for special taxes against Big Oil after Exxon Mobil Corp. on Monday posted a record profit of $10.7 billion in the latest quarter and more than $36 billion for the year.

They have to beat wall street expectations so that their stock prices dont go down.Of course the money that people earn in the markets is not the result of actual work--which is ok--but families, people going to and from real work suffer.

now, they don't know what to do

the more they raise the price, the less is bought

Oil prices go up and the oil companies report record profits; yet their stock prices remain the same! What gives?

I know someone with some of this Mobil stock and look at the price of it over the last year.

I've told them big boyz, and I'll tell 'em again, you raise that gas price over $2 a gallon and I park it!

Yes, I drive some, but my driving is cut in half. I catch rides with friends and just don't go other places.

I'm Grandma, but I've already asked Santa for a bike. I'll like a lightweight hybrid. $600 outta pay for it.

And then they have the gall to refuse to testify before Congress to explain their BILLION DOLLAR profits.

These vampires are bleeding us all dry!

And the sad thing is, that we have no viable alternative to our current combustion engine technology. We are getting scewed people.

I'm against any nationalization of any oil company. The government is simply not best equipped to run an oil company as it would be bogged down by bureaucratic mismanagement, too much regulations, corruption and incompetent gov't employees with no experience in running an oil company.

What I would propose a nationwide ethics training on finances and responsible money management in the business schools and colleges for people wanting to run businesses someday, especially petrochemical companies.

Corruption, financial mismanagement and irresponsibility are caused by selfish people having NO ethical and NO moral understanding of how money is supposed to be used and spent for specific reasons for the greater benefits of the society.

Stop buying gas. Get an electric vehicle. Walk or take public transportation. Get a bike or motorcycle. Only drive when you absolutely have to. Let them keep their gd oil.

Let's go over our options:

Currently most use gasoline to get to work or school or to shop.

Diesel is another option..

Either vehicle can be converted to run off of alcohol(methanol/ethanol?)

Make your own fuel at home:

If you have a diesel, make your own biodiesel:

You can get conversion kits to make your vehicle run off propane or natural gas.

Can convert your vehicle to electric.

You can buy hydrogen in liquid or gas, have it delivered to your home, or even rent or lease a hydrogen generator!

'''''''''''-which is ok--but families, people going to and from real work suffer.''''''''';'''

They keep the prices high--the car companies start closing plants and laying off people-steel--Delphi-disrupting lives-leaving them less to spend-and for what --a bottom line--that is so fat now it is embarrasing even to the oil companies.

THEN they trash CHAVEZ for trying to make it easier on some folk. They could
sell cheaper--after all there really is enough--but that would be to easy and to....human--not a corporate trait--mifgt affect those million$$ christmas bonus's

maybe it was our own fault for allowing ourselves to become "addicted" to oil, as Bush said
the price of gas was very low to begin, to get us all hooked
