About two thirds of the rockets that Hamassholes fired at Israel did not threaten populated areas. The ID didn't shoot those down. The ID was used primarily for the rockets that posed a threat to populated areas. The ID had about a 90% success rate. I'd say that is pretty good.

Basic facts:

1) After the joint Israeli-US LASER program Nautilus was put on hold because it was deemed commercially non-viable until 2015-2020 at earliest...... Iron Dome IS a unique, indigenous Israeli system developed in record-short period of time of just over 2 years --- when even US scientists were saying it couldn't be developed in even in 5, not by the tiny, resource-strapped Israel.

2) It wasn't even operationally deployed until 2011. By comparison, the famed Russian S-300 has been in development since 1960's and already operational in 1979.....Same with American Patriot family.

3) Israel needs at least 15 ID batteries for optmal coverage, but even with US funding, it only had 4 in place when the Operation Amud Anan began last month. That means that we haven't even seen the system even close to its full potential. And for an untested new system using a brand-new concept, its success rate is close to 90% and rising every engagement, even defeating barrags of 20 Hamas rockets simultaneously.

4) Because of Gaza long-rage rockets, Israel had to rush the 5th Iron Dome battery 3 months ahead of schedule in the middle of the conflict. And it managed to do something that even its designers didn't expect -- it recorded first ever intercepts of Iranian heavy long-range rocket Fajr-5 heading for Tel Aviv.

5) Iron Dome cost per intercept has already dropped frrom 60,000 to less than 40,000 --- as with most tech, once the economy-of-scale & production line efficiencies are reached, the cost of Tamir interceptor is expected to be at only 20,000.

6) Conversely, the cost of rockets for Gaza terrorists is only going up --- from cheap Qassam, to less cheap Grad, to even less cheap Chinese extended range Grad, to expensive Fajr-3, Fajr-5 and Zelzal series! Especially after certain *someone* bombed the Iranian built rocket factory & storage facilities in Sudan in October... not to mention annihilated Gaza's billions-dollar worth of terror infrastructure, factorties, underground launchers in November. Hell, now that smuggling tunnels are fewer and Egyptians are more closely monitoring their side of Sinai, the Sinai bedouin smugglers' fees are skyrocketing --- thus raising the cost of transporting of those "cheap" Gaza rockets many-fold. LOL, why do you think Hamas was begging for the cease-fire? Gaza as a whole was getting bankrupted :)

7) The increased interest in the Iron Dome system by South Korea, Singapore, Colombia, India, etc and of course the US.... means that Israel will be making PROFIT from Iron Dome before long. Hell, US Foreign Military Aid already partialy off-sets the costs as it is, so the rest is just gravy for Rafael, IAI and other Israeli industries. So much for ID "bankrupting" Israel as the clueless haters were predicting years ago.

8) Iron Dome saved BILLIONS of dollars by allowed Israeli leadership to pound terrorists from the air, without getting boggged down in a very costly, bloody, month+ long LAND operation in Gaza strip itself. So in effect, Iron Dome already paid for its entire development costs just during the last round of fighting alone! Amazing!

9) ID also raises the prestige & credibility of other Israeli industries. So for instance, IAI and major Indian defense company just signed a Memorandum-of-Understanding on expanding production of Barak-8 missiles, potentially worth close to billion dollars. Now Israel is highly thought of in the corporate/industrial world as a whole, but who's to say that Iron Dome's

10) Israel is partering with US on variety of projects. Boeing is workgin with Israel on the most sophisticated & yet also most cost-effective EXO-atmospheric intercepter, called "Arrow-3". Raytheon is working with Rafael on next generation of "Magic Wand" system that was just successfully live-tested last week. So Iron Dome's technology can help US, while US can in turn sell Israel a few 1,000 bunker-busters for free. Win-win situations (unless you're Jihadi, that is) :)

Just like Israel may give South Korea the Iron Dome batteries in exchange for half-dozen Corvettes or Frigattes that South Koreans are really good at making.... that Israel needs to protect its off-shore gas rigs in the Med.... and which, when Israel finishes adding on its own missile systems & radars to, will be like having its very own Destroyers-Lite, LOL
