The rocket was scheduled to pass between the Korean peninsula and China, with a second stage coming down off the Philippines before launching the satellite into orbit.

Ok, lets analyze this. NK shot the missile which is supposed (so far) to land in the philipines, about 2000 miles from NK, it means that making it goes just a little bit more, they will be able to hit some ME country, not Israel, that will be about 4000 miles away, but anyway its something scary. And don't forget, they have nukes...

Surprise is definitely one thing you don't want in the line of National Security. Especially coming from North Korea who is in cohorts with Iran.

Provocative as this is, launching over Japanese sovereign soil could easily escalate the situation.

If I remember correctly, the US is responsible for protecting Japan since WW2.
