It seems to have a polar orbit, probably sun-synchronous. Basically, three kinds of satellites use that sort of orbit; meteorological, mapping, and spy satellites. The former in order to monitor things like global temperature and improve weather forecast modeling, the latter two because it keeps the shadow angles the same on each pass and provides global coverage. I seriously doubt the north koreans put a satellite up there to check for global warming or see if polar bears are stranded on ice floats. The old Keyhole spy satellites (aka Big Bird) also used these kinds of orbits. It makes sense that they would start off using that kind of orbit for a spy satellite themselves - a polar orbit grants global coverage. |

Well, I don't see any problem with them having a weather satellite. Lord knows it helps with agriculture and lots of other info intensive matters. Good grief. Welcome to the 21st Century, NK. Good for you. But if you have any ideas of putting a bomb in orbit, I'll take back my congrats. Good for you. But if you have any ideas of putting a bomb in orbit, I'll take back my congrats. I seriously doubt it's actually a weather satellite, that's just a cover story, it's probably a spy satellite in the same vein as the keyhole satellites, but with most likely digital imaging instead of film. It's also a test of their rocket technology, so it's a precursor to putting a bomb on a rocket. They want to be sure the rocket works first so that the bomb doesn't come down on their own heads by accident. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 15044657 United States 12/12/2012 03:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | it's nwo, people, wake up already. this is casus belli. Casus Belli: Noun An act or situation provoking or justifying war. Same thing just happened with Iran, don't have a link, but said something about them now officially being fully nuclear capable, which is casus belli for Israel to strike whenever they please now. just saying. also, they don't have control over things in space like they would have you think. it's a show... whether whatever they shot into space is really there or not, nobody can really prove it besides what some news story says. i would take this with a grain of salt, but pay more attention to the events that follow because that's what it's really about. |

So they don't want to enter the Space Race, they want to be able to drop a bomb on someone living on the other side of the planet. Great. Like we didn't have enough problems in the world as it is. When either the US, Russia, or China shoot the damned thing down, the Koreans are going to blame it on their using cheaper parts and cutting corners during construction - like they always do! They'll be chasing their tail on this one for years! Keeps them busy anyway and maybe we'll be hearing less KPOP bullshit on the radio for a while. |

Either the satellite itself has military capabilities, or it was testing the delivery package for a future launch of something w/military capabilities. I'm not for blowing shit up without thinking it through very carefully first, but in this case there is no way it should have been allowed to clear 20,000 feet. Spy sat, some sort of M.I.R.V. thing, something nasty more than likely. |

I don't like the sound of Iran officials at the launch (allegedly). I agree with the theory that it's probably a spy satellite. I can see all this eventually leading into another w pleasear. And Probably WW3. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29584785 oh please, you are total y exaggerating. Space does not belong exclusively to Australia. |
