Anonymous Coward User ID: 29405888 United States 12/11/2012 11:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Toyota-Honda-Nissan, anything from the late 80's to mid 90's should be within your price range. Do not get Tercel's or V6 camry's for toyota. Honda stay with 4 cylinder engines. Nissan avoid the maxima like the plague, sentra and altima are ok (do not get v6 altima). Pretty much stay with any 4 cylinder Toyota-Honda-Nissan EXCEPT for the Tercel. Celica's (late 80's-90's) I don't like very much, never dealt with those. For some reason I see a lot of them broken down in driveways, don't know what it is bout them You'll quickly regret straying from those brands (don't go with mitsubishi/mazda/suzuki or any other japanese brand) dealer only parts will kill you (if you can still find them) GM, Chrysler and Ford are a mixed bag. The 1991-1995 first generation Saturn SL2 seems pretty reliable, a relative of mine had one that I serviced and it ran perfectly until he sold it past 250k. It had a bad PCM/ECU (computer) but once I replaced that it kept going fine. Plentiful supply of parts at junkyards too. Chrysler, I've only dealt with the Dodge Neon. Fairly good cars, apparently they have mitsubishi engines. Very simple and easy to work on, parts are also cheap. Stick with the 1st gen 1995-1999, look for the DOHC engine and manual transmission. Avoid the 2nd generation.Plentiful supply of parts at junkyards too. Ford, I've rarely dealt with. I've heard that the late 80's early 90's Ford Escort wasn't so bad (those little hatchbacks) Apparently had mazda engines. If you want something a little nicer you can probably find a cheap Ford Probe, which looks nice and is basically a clone of the Mazda MX-6. Now keep in mind that Mazda parts are harder to find and probably more expensive, and more of the parts will be dealer only than with other brands. Avoid the 80's-90's Ford Taurus like the plague. Good luck, if you need help I'll gladly respond. |

Somehow spend all my money! Payments sound good, but noone will touch me... I could handle payments. Thinking of printing a flyer at retirement home, for old ppl who can't srive and asking if they'll donate or let me make payments. Figure it'd worth a shot. |

You can do that fairly cheaply with a corolla or civic, less so with a Mk3 Supra (or anything else for that matter: Fox body mustang, F-body GM cars or any other car of that class/era) I'd start out with something basic, something that is cheaper to fix and maintain until I could gather the cash for a Mk3 Supra, 5.0 Mustang or whatever you like. An aftermarket MLS (multi-layered steel) headgasket from Fel Pro and a box of new headbolts will fix that... Yeah for $4,000 take your pick! I saw a SWEET Toyota MR-2 Turbo with 120k miles, clean title never riced or wrecked go for $3,500! I seriously thought about getting it but someone bought it while I was working :( Yes, "my CPU is a neural-net processor, a learning computah" That KA24 is legendary... its right up there with the 22RE Toyota series. How about the 1.8 liter 7A-FE on the 93-97 Corollas? My ex girlfriend had one with over 380,000 miles! And her car had originally been a salvage title and she stick wrecked it 2 more times including a total loss incident and it just kept running and running... Just do the timing belt (with all the pulleys/tensioners) and water pump and those engines won't quit! Cheers |
