This brings back so many memories from the late 90's !

I used to have a 28k modem back then and when I made the upgrade to 56k I was the happiest man in the world !

With my new modem I could download a 3.5MB MP3 file in less than 1/3 of an hour instead of a full hour it took me on the old one...now I download it in 1/3 of a second !1rof1

It's amazing how technology has evolved in just a 15 years !

Re: just curious , anyone here still uses a dialup to get online?
Some remote areas have only dial-up. I had dial-up only until about a year ago when I moved closer to town. I imagine the people that still live up there on the mountain top still only have dial-up. It wasn't populated enough for the tele. co. to run dsl up there. No cable tv either but that was no loss. And no cell phone service.

But that's not why I moved. Would actually like to move back.

WOw I remember those days in the 90s when you had to deal with a modem and couldn't talk on the phone when you used the computer ! ...

I had a Bulletin Board System, BBS, with a 56k in '96 when I was in high school. Those were the days to be a MOD. The last time I used a dial up was with NetZero in 1999.

Anyone else had a BBS?

Lol I used to run a BBS with my old commie 64 on a 300 baud modem and a tape drive, I still remember saving to upgrade to a 1200 baud and a disk drive that was bigger than the computer.

My original modem was 1200 Baud with the phone coupler like something you'd see in a museum. My first laptop (a 386 SX20) had a 2400 baud built in... I thought it was THE SHIT! I was too poor to upgrade it to a 9600 and the next step I took was a 14.4k... Holy shit I was happy! I remember downloading the entire ECG Semiconductor database (Four archives, 3.5 megabytes a piece over 2 and half days!!!!)

Now I grab a Gig in a matter of minutes.... Holy crap, times have changed.

I borrowed a 1200 baud modem from work in about 1986 so I could work from home on my monochrome terminal. List price for the modem was $995.

Holy shit yes... [He says excitedly]

I remember operating a BBS before the web was in existence... Arpnet, Efnet and bouncing mail through servers which took a day or so to get e-mail through.

Who here knows what a NUP is? (Old warez traders?)

The worst experience with dialup I had was I played PSO on dreamcast and I guess somehow I dialed my friend's dialup account and ran up a really high phone bill. Not sure how that happened, but I know being in highschool my dad had to pay the bill which was at least $500. I still stay awake at night and think back how the hell did I do that.

Living out here in the sticks I'm glad I can even get DSL

There's no Cable, or Fiber

But I can get 4G which is a hell of a lot faster but a heck of a lot more money
