Re: getting clean off heroin....any suggestions or just friendly chat? cant sleep!!!
I've been following this thread for a few days, I just wanted to make a comment at how amazing and supportive some of the people of GLP can be...it warms my heart to see others trying to support someone they have never met, sometimes this kind of support is what helps people get through the day.

If they have family who is too nosey or judgemental it gets overwhelming and the relapse could be right around the corner as the stress levels increase for the individual.

OP I am keeping you in my heart. I hope the worst of it is over for you, just know there are always people here (from EVERY walk of life) who have may have experienced something similar. Its always nice to have people to chat with who you can relate to and I just want to say some of the people on this thread have really opened up and shared a part of their life with you as you have with them. I have a very addictive personality when it comes to substances and I have tried to stay away from some of the harder ones, I can't imagine how hard it could be to come off of some of them...I am keeping you in my heart as you overcome this!

I would think that using a small amount to stave off the horrible withdrawls verses using to get high is a lot of progress even if its just mental progress, which I think may be a lot of the issue with addiction, but I'm not an expert on these things. Thanks for your brave honesty and keeping us updated:)

Thank you, and all of you. This is amazing how many people are praying for me :) I truly am blessed. Suboxones are the hardest thing ever to find in my city- I managed to find 3. I will be GOLDEN now.... I am so very happy to be getting off this bullshit... It is a demonic force and I can not wait to completely get away from it- start my new career- and completely change my life for the better and eventually start a family and move south.... Life is coming together nicely for me now.... God is truly blessing me.... Thank you all!!

Seems like you are in good spirits today...I can't speak from experience with this kind of thing, but I can only imagine how hard it must be. We are definitely thinking about you!

We all have battles, some big, some small...our perception of our reality can make a huge difference in if we are successful or not in overcoming them. When you think about using again remember your perception at that moment and try to remember what you said in this previous post, life is coming together for you, God is blessing you and you can make these changes :)

My advice about addictions is, when you think you're off it don't think that, always keep the thought of that you don't need it and don't WANT it.

And think about that you are going to do this (Very good by the way). Dont think that you can do it, because then you leave possibilities open for thought you don't want.

Drug addiction is an incredibly serious battle Op. I got through it. You can too. Do. Not. Give. Up.
And you are correct. There are indeed demonic forces involved. Jesus Christ defeats them all. There is power in his name. Call out to him. Seek him. Pick up the word and you will be given all the tools to defeat them. There is a reason it is called the Sword of the Spirit.

Re: getting clean off heroin....any suggestions or just friendly chat? cant sleep!!!
Listen man the biggest thing you need to do, and probably the hardest, is get away from the people in your life that are still using.

This is the hardest part.

You need to get out of that social circle.

I have a friend who got through heroin addiction. She got counceling, subuxens, and would go to methodone clinics. The best thing she said that she did was she left the city she lived in and found a new place to live in a different city. She got away from the people in her life that are using. She's been clean for years now. Infact she says thinking about heroin makes her feel sick to her stomach and she has no desire to go back.

ITs going to be much harder on you if all of your friends are using. When you see them they might offer you some, or try to get you to use or just use in front of you. You can't be around any of that anymore if you are serious about getting clean.

You can do it man!

I have a history of opiate addiction going back over 25 years and never had any lasting success at staying clean till I got on Suboxone. I used it to kick a long-term Methadone addiction and it's been almost 3 years since I've used any illicit drugs. I haven't drank for over 15 years so I do have some history of success at staying clean, but never had any success at staying off opiates for any length of time on my own.

I know some people don't consider it being clean due to Suboxone being a synthetic opiate, but it got me out of that lifestyle and I'm not constantly fixating on how and where I'm going to get my next fix. It's allowed me to cut old ties, break old habits, and get my life together. I'm not spending every dime I have on drugs or risking going to jail over them and that in itself makes life worth living for me. Things are a lot better for me now than they ever were when I was actively using.

My doctor prescribed Suboxone 4mg BID (twice a day) but that's more than I really need and in an effort to keep my habit down I only do 1mg-2mg a day. I advised him I wasn't taking as much as he prescribed and he doesn't have a problem with it, he lets me regulate my dose and I only see him every couple months to check in and get a refill. I'm eligible for Medicare and Medicaid so my doctor visits don't end up costing me anything and my co-pay for a script of 30 8mg strips is only $6.50 a month. I'm stockpiling the ones I have left over by not taking as much as I'm prescribed in case of emergency, or if the SHTF, and have enough set back to last me a year at the rate I'm taking it now.

It's a much better life than what I was leading, and if you're serious about getting clean and having problems relapsing I'd recommend you look into finding a doctor that will prescribe them to you. You'll be glad you did.

Which is why prescribing heroin works just as well. Most people even reduce their dose on their own when they have a steady clean supply.
There are a small % of the population who function better with carefully monitored supplemental opiates, why not give them to them?

Oh, wait, it destroys the market for drugs-can't have that!

[link to www.popcenter.org]

The data collected so far tend to show, however, a decline not only
of nonprescribed heroin consumption, but also of other illicit drugs.
As the following tables illustrate, police, as well as self-report data,
consistently show that use of illicit drugs fell among those prescribed
heroin; more significantly, incidence as well as "daily" use — i.e.,
proxy measures of the actual volume of consumption — decreased
more than the number of users.

Lots of vitamin C - up to 5 grams a day, even more if you can deal with it(carefully). It's generally non-toxic and helps with withdrawal from everything.

Well, there is that. The thing about suboxone is that it is not at all inebriating. Also, its long half-life makes it so that, some days, I forget to take it. On methadone, at an appropriate dose, I was nodding out at 8:00 every night. After I quit, cold turkey, I managed seven months without opioids. The PAWS was too much for me. I just could NOT get my life going again. So I got on suboxone, 16mg qd. Suddenly, I could do life again. I finished herb school, started wildcrafting again and got back into the things I love most. I honestly don't know if I ever intend to get off, short of SHTF type events. It also has a strong enough binding affinity that, back when I would slip up and use sometimes, I would have to take sooo much to get past the subs that it just wasn't worth the expense. It is an amazing and incredibly elegant drug.

Fr folks that have problems with PAWS, it seems a good solution.... at least until a real method of receptor site and downregulation repair becomes available. Wild Oats Milky Seed can do this for some folks and is worth trying, but I was not among the lucky few.

 Quoting: Mycelium

I didn't initially intend to stay on Suboxone as long as I have and after a couple years slowly tapered myself off successfully over a period of several months without any withdrawal symptoms other than a little RLS and a few nights where I didn't sleep well.

However, it wasn't long after I was off it completely that thoughts of trying to score opiates started to creep back into my mind again and rather than go back to my old lifestyle decided it better to go back on Suboxone. Life is so much better for me now compared to when I was addicted to Methadone it wasn't much of a decision.

I was a little depressed at first at the thought of maybe being on it for the rest of my life, but the thought of being addicted to street narcotics the rest of my life was even more depressing, so I'm good with it. I've got enough stashed away right now that I could taper myself off at a leisurely pace with no problems if it came down to it and I'm enjoying the life I have now.

My cousin also was very successful taking the suboxone. It's better then relapsing over and over again. I was always scared that something would happen and I wouldn't be able to pay for it. I've used it as a crutch to get over the first few days of withdrawal.

Good for you....!

Just wanted to add...not all Dr's can prescribe it, they have to take special classes or something and those that are able to prescribe it charge big bucks..it's terrible. This was a few years ago, I gave up trying to get it. One Dr. refused to prescribe it for me unless I saw a psych because apparently a woman stalked him one time? wtf? He was one of those back alley Dr.s

There is some hope it may eventually be rescheduleded, if only for hospice use. Its an excellent hospice drug, because it does not cause the disorientation like some other opiates, and, as you know, it works very quickly, which is important in serve pain states, such as bone cancer.

You're right about them having to take a special class to prescribe it. The doctor that prescribes Suboxone for me is actually a psychiatrist.

We have a good relationship and I came right out and asked him about the stories I had heard about doctors getting kickbacks and paid vacations for prescribing Sub. He said it if was happening it was news to him, that he was on salary at the place he worked at and made the same amount of pay no matter how many people he saw or what he prescribed them.

The people raking in the real money are the drug companies that make it. My co-pay is only $6.50 a month for 30 8mg strips, but the regular charge if I didn't have benefit of a co-pay would have been $303.99, and that sounds cheap compared to what I remember other people being charged.

Here is a nice little history of the drug, if anyone needs reading material while detoxing...

[link to www.amazon.com]

Review:

Metzger also traces the activities of many other influential individuals who contributed to the public's skewed perception of the drug and its devotees over the years.

Today, heroin and its users have become synonymous with devolution and degeneracy. How this came to be makes for a fascinating tale, and Th. Metzger tells it well in The Birth of Heroin and the Demonization of the Dope Fiend.

The People who can:t stop their Heroin-Addiction at the moment
should not do a Withdrawal, what i learned is that every WD.
becomes harder and harder!

Our Consciousness own a very good Memory and will avoid all
bad Experiences, a non-successful Withdrawal is poison!

To just think; *Oh, i need to stop* is not enough,
this will bring you not through a Week without the Smack!

Of course every case is different but as i said i study
Addiction (Opiate and Opiode) since 20 Years and i literally
saw countless People with this Syndrome (imo. a Heroin-Addiction is just the Symptom and a kind of Self-Medication
for the People who cant find another Solution)

People who dont want a classical Therapy should leave everything behind and move on,
if you cant win a fight you need to get strong in a Retreat
but this safe Haven is not your Home,
not your Family and Friends maybe not
even in your Country!

PS; another advise to minimize the WD-Symptomes is Magnesium,
this will reduce the pain in your Bones!

Ganbare and inform yourself about Ibogaine!

If you have access, go to a sauna and try to accelerate the ridding of toxins from your body. Also, take some Milk Thistle or some other herb to help your liver. I garuntee it'll acclerate your withdrawal so you can feel normal again faster.

I second this. Go get yourself a portable FAR infrared sauna. One of the band members of The Who got off heroin with this remedy.

i witnessed a guy going through withdrawal. he got thrown in the slammer. locked up. i was in a nearby cell. the guy hacked and coughed all through the night. didn't come out of his cell during the day. next night, more hacking and coughing, throwing up, hack and cough. next day, again remained in his cell, same repeat the third day.

finally on the fourth day the guy, a black guy, tall, lean and he looked totally spent, he had a towel draped over him. he walked about the small enclosed area slowly spanniing the area not saying a word. he receieved some ackoowledment from others in the same jailed area, he nodded his head in acknowledgement.

it was a tough go

it can be done

Good to hear...

Please do whatever it takes to stay off this nasty stuff... You don't want to have to go through this awful experience again and that's what you have to remind yourself of the next time you feel even the slightest urge to use again.... The short-lived reward will never be worth the long-term pain/discomfort and damage to your psychological well-being.

Yeah, what are you going to do so you don't end up in the same situation again a couple week or months from now? I went though withdrawals so many times only to start using again not long after I got over them that it isn't even funny.

It's a shitty way to live, do something positive for yourself while you're ahead. 12 Step programs never helped me but there's no doubt they do help some people. Do whatever it takes to stay clean before you end up in jail or dead.

Hey OP glad to hear you are feeling better at the moment! One thing you must realize is that suboxone is not a cure, it is meant to merely help you step down off the substance...kind of like a nicotine patch. It is still addictive, and your symptoms are "gone" due to the sub. If you had enough sub, the best thing to do is taper your dose down over several days...the WD symptoms might return but should not be as intense. from there just take immodium for the shits, take a multivitamin daily, eat as healthy as you can, if you cant stomach water..powerade/gatorade/pedialyte is prolly better anyway with the electrolytes, take benadryl at night...you might get some sleep! after the first few weeks try to get some exercise...it will help boost your mood, and most importantly...relax!

it is not easy but you can def do this!

Here is a nice little history of the drug, if anyone needs reading material while detoxing...

Please don't judge it by the review, the book very well researched, if a bit strident in spots. I'm trying to stick to cutapasting non copyright material....

What I find most interesting about addiction is that only a small, and very consistant, percentage of the population experiences the sort of drug use pattern you so accurately describe.

Everyone else on earth can use heroin and just quit. We had a huge experiment called they Vietnam War which proved this to be the case.

"“Perhaps our most remarkable finding,” Robins later noted, “was that only 5% of the men who became addicted in Vietnam relapsed within 10 months after return, and only 12% relapsed even briefly within three years.” What accounted for this surprisingly high recovery rate from heroin, thought to be the most addictive drug of all? As is turned out, treatment and/or institutional rehabilitation didn’t make the difference: Heroin addiction treatment was close to nonexistent in the 1970s, anyway. “Most Vietnam addicts were not even detoxified while in service, and only a tiny percentage were treated after return,” Robins reported. It wasn’t solely a matter of easier access, either, since roughly half of those addicted in Vietnam had tried smack at least once after returning home. But very few of them stayed permanently readdicted."

You can quit heroin OP, most people can. Most people can quit even after relapsing. Even after relapsing several times. The vast majority of people can then quit for the rest of their lives.

A very few people can't. I think we need to study those few people more, and develop better treatments
