Syrian forces fire Scud missiles at rebels

Syrian forces have fired Scud missiles at rebel groups in the northern part of the country over the last few days, according to senior U.S. officials.

The use of the missiles marks a potentially significant expansion of the civil war, which has already killed more than 40,000 people. It comes as the Syrian rebels have been gaining momentum in their fight to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his regime

The use of the missiles was confirmed by senior officials who declined to be identified when discussing intelligence information.

The building of the Syrian interior ministry in the capital Damascus has been targeted by three explosions, according to state TV.

One of the blasts was caused by a car bomb, the report said.

There had been "a number of deaths and injuries" and damage to the building, reports the BBC.

It's only a big deal if one they used chem warheads on those scuds or two if they fired those scuds as a neighboring country. Use in the homefront on a conventional scale isn't really huge.

It is an escalation now the Scuds are used it is only one small step away from another use of warhead!

I'll give you that yes it's an escalation in fire power, however it's not the escalation that is going to get an intervention, not until he crosses that chem weapon line

Scuds are pretty worthless. They are useful only as a terror threat. At this point I doubt the rebels are going to be really worried when a scud explodes in a field somewhere.

Even that might not cause an intervention if happened very late in the game, as it were. If Assad's forces were to use chemical weapons literally as they were overrun, there's not much the West could do about.

"Sign of desperation"?? Seriously? It's more like a zombie apocalypse movie. Thousands of bodies decapitated, bones and heads rolling around, blood and flesh on the walls and streets...that's what's happening there. No winners in this bloodbath, except the hidden players we never see.

Lest we ever forget there was long ago a certain nuclear warhead [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] seeing how small and light that one is? Imagine a couple or four of them on a standard SCUD series reconfigured for these warheads. The Mk-54 Davy Crockett weighed about 51 lb (23 kg), with a yield equivalent to somewhere between 10 or 20 tons of TNT.. just an M-80 firecracker. Of course as far as we have been told the Davy Crockett went extinct along with T-Rex, right?

Versions of the W54 warhead were also used in the Special Atomic Demolition Munition project and the AIM-26A Falcon.

Brussel Syria near collapse - Nato
Brussels - The head of Nato said on Thursday he thought the government of President Bashar Assad was nearing collapse, and condemned the use by Assad's forces of Scud missiles to attack rebels.

"I think the regime in Damascus is approaching collapse," Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters after a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at Nato headquarters in Brussels.

"I think now it is only a question of time."

Rasmussen said the Syrian government's use of Scud missiles showed "utter disregard" for the lives of Syrian people.
