I always knew of the MIT courses but this is much better I think.

I am going to look into it seriously and see what they have and sign in for a couple of courses or three.

Coursera is great. I did their AI course, Neural Networks, and PGM's. Great stuff.

Some of the courses take 5-10 hours / week. Since most people vegetate infront of a television for a few times more than that, you should be able to find time.

People who use these education resources will not just be your average joe who needs to 'land' a job. It will include smart self-employed people upskilling continuously to maintain a diverse edge over the degreed and employed who are to lazy and content with what they already know. As an employer myself, I value current knowledge more than a historic piece of paper saying someone received a degree 5 years ago.

Just like there is a difference between, think and reasoning.. There is a difference between learning and knowing.

There's a talk on TED about coursera's purpose. Iirc one reason was to improve on this online teaching stuff.

I think it's great. I have enrolled in about 12 different courses, focusing on computer programming.

The naysayers are so ignorant, I don't know where to begin.

Gaining applicable knowledge and skill which you can demonstrate in a workplace is more important than gaining a degree.

Receiving certificates from these courses can not only give you a huge head start in learning that will allow you to breeze through "real" college courses; but, it is very likely to count towards a written consent alternative to prerequisite requirements in community/technical colleges.

For people who want to learn about programming, it's excellent. Personally, I study programming in college primarily because of my own personal interest in the subject and getting a degree is secondary to my desire to learn about the subject for personal use.
