I believe it might have to do with residual memory imprints of past incarnations. What animals specifically do you have an affinity to?  Mine are, in no particular order: Bird of Prey - eagle or hawk probably Penguin - Emperor penguin specifically pachyderm - elephant of some type. Cat - not sure as all cats fit it seems.
