METH originated in Japan, was first supplied to U.S. via S.Korea
I remember someone posting an one or two weeks ago about how a quarter/half of N.Korea's population were "meth addicts" (a bit exaggerated but by no means completely false). Well if that does happen to be the case today, it's because they likely got a hold of Japan/S.Korea's manufacturing techniques. Here's an article from the L.A. Times dating back to 1987 describing the "Ice" situation in Hawaii and the roots of the now infamous "faces of meth" viral campaign:

[link to articles.latimes.com]

'SEOUL — Investigators believe South Korea is a major source of the highly pure crystal methamphetamine that is raising alarm in Hawaii as "ice," a potent, smokable form of the drug that authorities say is already catching on in the U.S. mainland and may rival crack cocaine in popularity.

Indeed, crystal methamphetamine is already the drug of choice in East Asia, where marijuana and cocaine are scarce and heroin is all but unheard of on the street. In Japan, the most lucrative market for methamphetamine, police say they annually arrest more than 20,000 people for using and trafficking in the drug, nearly all of which is smuggled in from Taiwan and South Korea.

Methamphetamine abuse is booming in South Korea, too. The Seoul government has vowed to crack down on the epidemic before it gets out of control, but the illicit trade in the drug has evaded Asian authorities for decades.'
 Quoting: L.A. Times

From the second page:

' Yakuza gangs derive about half their income from methamphetamine sales in Japan, police say, distributing it to the demimonde of gambling and prostitution they control. On the wholesale level, rocks of crystal methamphetamine called gankoro are pulverized and cut into a powder known as shabu, which sells on the street for about $35 for a 0.05-gram dose. Smoking of the drug in its original rock form is unheard of in Japan.

The yakuza are loosely allied in the regional drug trade with the ethnic Chinese underworld, most notably Taiwan's Bamboo Union gang, and investigators have traced their activities to Manila. So far, however, officials say there has been no evidence that Japanese gangs are smuggling methamphetamine into Hawaii or the U.S. mainland.

"We know the gangs are established in Hawaii, but we don't know exactly what their plans are," said Kazuo Motegi, a superintendent in the drug enforcement division of Japan's National Police Agency. "It's considered a possibility that they're preparing for the drug trade."

Japan's love affair with speed began during World War II, when the militarist government supplied a commercial brand of liquid methamphetamine called Philopon to Imperial Army soldiers and factory workers to give them stamina.

After the war, Philopon was available as a legal, over-the-counter drug until its abuse got out of hand and authorities banned it. Organized crime produced the drug domestically for a while until a police crackdown prompted them to relocate their factories to South Korea, which still supplies about 40% of the Japanese market.
Nearly all the rest comes from Taiwan, through a pipeline that largely evades police because the lack of diplomatic ties precludes joint investigations.'
 Quoting: L.A. Times

Not that the U.S. didn't have its own OTC version of speed (in an inhaler!) to help keep the population's spirits and
productivity going during the everyday-drudge of two near-consecutive world wars (that climaxed into America's halcyon decade of the 1950's).

IMAGE ( [link to amphetamines.com] )

That is, until 1959, when "speed" was banned from direct sale to the public. Ever increasing ammounts of homos and fatasses ever since...that is, except for all the kids running around with their ADHD prescriptions (Adderall = amphetamine and Desoxyn = methamphetamine, Ritalin being a similar dopamine and norepinephrine increasing stimulant).

Does anyone wanna try and find the East-Asian version of faces of meth? Doesn't exist...why? Because these people have been "socially" disciplined to the point where using illicit stimulants just to meet the societal demands imposed on them (just look at the boom these two countries have had leading up 1999). FACES OF METH IS JUST A SLIDESHOW OF INBRED, HOMELESS, SCHIZOPHRENIC CRACK AND CIGARETTE CHAIN-SMOKING ALCOHOLIC HILLBILLIES WHO MAY HAVE BEEN RUN-OVER OR ASSAULTED PRIOR TO HAVING THEIR MUGSHOT TAKEN.

It's nothing but a meme, perpetuated by the DEA and the Feds since "Reefer Madness" has officially been a bust. We've all heard about how Hitler and his troops were raving-mad speedfreaks, or tales of "shabu" and how THE AMERICANS HAD USED MORE AMPHETAMINES DURING THE VIETNAM WAR THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD LIKELY DID IN WWII!, but don't be unaware of this powerful stimulant's still-current and extensive use "behind the scenes" of the government/military industrial complex. Nor how TPTB have come to let us onto the "fact" that marijuana is a safe, relatively-harmless sedating tool in helping find inner-peace (ie: soft and pliable.)

Your nearly and mostly right. At first, I almost didn't believe you. I'm a googler. But we have to keep the word "meth" in context. It's true that the Japanese began the methamphetamine drive. But not so true as it holds it's title to the "meth" that is on the street in today's terms.

Thank you for the insight. Who knew?

For some reason, almost none of the stimulant users back then knew "speed" by its chemical name, likely because most amphetamines "felt" the same when snorted or swallowed. It probably wasn't before the cystal form of it made its way to North American shores that people took notice of the word "meth" because it's the only form of amphetamine that can be smoked.

Exactly. Peeps should at least leave the chemistry to someone knowledgeable (advanced-chemistry students, lol) instead of half-assing it themselves with chemical reagents that weren't intended for pharmaceutical purposes. Btw, to those wondering, to "cook" meth means deriving it from ephedrine (hence, the cold meds). This can be compared to "straining it out" of the otc medications, though this is done through various chemical-reduction techniques that usually take place inside a controlled lab with proper equipment, not inside a garden shed/car trunk (especially if it's moving, ffs!)

Hitler's Drugged Soldiers
By Andreas Ulrich

The Nazis preached abstinence in the name of promoting national health. But when it came to fighting their Blitzkrieg, they had no qualms about pumping their soldiers full of drugs and alcohol. Speed was the drug of choice, but many others became addicted to morphine and alcohol.

In a letter dated November 9, 1939, to his "dear parents and siblings" back home in Cologne, a young soldier stationed in occupied Poland wrote: "It's tough out here, and I hope you'll understand if I'm only able to write to you once every two to four days soon. Today I'm writing you mainly to ask for some Pervitin ...; Love, Hein."

Pervitin, a stimulant commonly known as speed today, was the German army's -- the Wehrmacht's -- wonder drug.

On May 20, 1940, the 22-year-old soldier wrote to his family again: "Perhaps you could get me some more Pervitin so that I can have a backup supply?" And, in a letter sent from Bromberg on July 19, 1940, he wrote: "If at all possible, please send me some more Pervitin." The man who wrote these letters became a famous writer later in life. He was Heinrich Boell, and in 1972 he was the first German to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in the post-war period.

Many of the Wehrmacht's soldiers were high on Pervitin when they went into battle, especially against Poland and France -- in a Blitzkrieg fueled by speed. The German military was supplied with millions of methamphetamine tablets during the first half of 1940. The drugs were part of a plan to help pilots, sailors and infantry troops become capable of superhuman performance. The military leadership liberally dispensed such stimulants, but also alcohol and opiates, as long as it believed drugging and intoxicating troops could help it achieve victory over the Allies. But the Nazis were less than diligent in monitoring side-effects like drug addiction and a decline in moral standards.

After it was first introduced into the market in 1938, Pervitin, a methamphetamine drug newly developed by the Berlin-based Temmler pharmaceutical company, quickly became a top seller among the German civilian population. According to a report in the Klinische Wochenschrift ("Clinical Weekly"), the supposed wonder drug was brought to the attention of Otto Ranke, a military doctor and director of the Institute for General and Defense Physiology at Berlin's Academy of Military Medicine. The effects of amphetamines are similar to those of the adrenaline produced by the body, triggering a heightened state of alert. In most people, the substance increases self-confidence, concentration and the willingness to take risks, while at the same time reducing sensitivity to pain, hunger and thirst, as well as reducing the need for sleep. In September 1939, Ranke tested the drug on 90 university students, and concluded that Pervitin could help the Wehrmacht win the war. At first Pervitin was tested on military drivers who participated in the invasion of Poland. Then, according to criminologist Wolf Kemper, it was "unscrupulously distributed to troops fighting at the front."
Thirty-five million tablets
During the short period between April and July of 1940, more than 35 million tablets of Pervitin and Isophan (a slightly modified version produced by the Knoll pharmaceutical company) were shipped to the German army and air force. Some of the tablets, each containing three milligrams of active substance, were sent to the Wehrmacht's medical divisions under the code name OBM, and then distributed directly to the troops. A rush order could even be placed by telephone if a shipment was urgently needed. The packages were labeled "Stimulant," and the instructions recommended a dose of one to two tablets "only as needed, to maintain sleeplessness."

Even then, doctors were concerned about the fact that the regeneration phase after taking the drug was becoming increasingly long, and that the effect was gradually decreasing among frequent users. In isolated cases, users experienced health problems like excessive perspiration and circulatory disorders, and there were even a few deaths. Leonardo Conti, the German Reich's minister of health and an adherent of Adolf Hitler's belief in asceticism, attempted to restrict the use of the pill, but was only moderately successful, at least when it came to the Wehrmacht. Although Pervitin was classified as a restricted substance on July 1, 1941, under the Opium Law, ten million tablets were shipped to troops that same year.

Pervitin was generally viewed as a proven drug to be used when soldiers were likely to be subjected to extreme stress. A memorandum for navy medical officers stated the following: "Every medical officer must be aware that Pervitin is a highly differentiated and powerful stimulant, a tool that enables him, at any time, to actively and effectively help certain individuals within his range of influence achieve above-average performance."

Only fucked up users glorify and rationalize the most poisonous substance known.

Behind the deaths of millions worldwide in the last 100 years.

And 100s of millions of non-users negatively affected as well by the users. Users being to self absorbed to care, minimally at least while using.

The most untrustworthy animals ever created....by self-inflicted means none-the-less.

Hitler did have daily meth injections from his personal physician. He also had meth laced chocolates created for his military personell. Special ones were made just for the flyers and tank drivers.

He also had a team of doctors, all but one (the one giving him the speed) that begged him (at first) and his upper staff (later) to stop the usage.

Hitler canned all but his dealer.

Meth will be there at the end times...but the tweakers will burn out quickly.

Those first few days/weeks though...fuuuuuuck.

Know this, tweaker, we know what you look like as you roam publicly (when you do).

You are watched at all times...because you are vampire.
