IT'S RAINING METEORS IN WI. !!

I'm in TN and just went outside to look. Sky full of stars and seen 2 in about 2 minutes..

What makes you say this? Not being rude just curious.

I'm in the middle of Minnesnowda. Overcast

got them going east to west here in southwestern pa. just walked inside the house. saw 3 of them in less than 5 minutes. great night to look up.

Saw a very bright one about an hour ago. Kenosha, Wi.

Illinois here, just saw a small quickie zip by. Going out to watch more.

In NY- overcast... they always cover the sky's over here. :P

Central Ohio here, saw a few on my smoke break....along with hearing what sounded like a screaming cat (lol) Jumped out of my skin.

It's the geminid meteor shower tonight, over 100 meteors per hour. Saw plenty tonight as well.

My god they are everywhere!!! And most of them seem to have some sort of red blinking light on them. For some strange reason, they seem to be thickest out toward the airport.

I'm in concord, California and I was medicating with some good medicinal marijauna and I saw a huge meteor head west from the east. It was real big, real bright, and had a huge tail of sparks behind it. Then about 10 minutes later I saw another smaller one go almost the same way as the first meteor. Almost the same place. It was really cool. It was around 8:00-8:45 west coast time. Anyone else see these 2 meteors.

Most of them only last as long as your finger, if you held it out for reference.

I'm only about 10 minuted from downtown Dayton so there's some light pollution, but I don't have street lights or neighbors with lights on outside... sweet!

Saw 3 while out for a smoke. They were small but likfe before the headed into Lake Ontario

10 in five minutes here, many were faint, Northeast Pa. but best I've ever seen, I'll definitely get up early to see more.

In northern Illinois, saw one heading southwest while driving to work.

Heavy action here in northern Indiana. Counted in excess of twenty per minute a few times. Shooting across the sky in all different directions, displaying a wonderful light show. I must admit, they differ a bit from previous showers I have witnessed before. The light coming from these is more vibrant than usual.

Its interesting we have to be told what to think of an event or object we never touched, designed or created neither did we know its origins or why it is happening. Yet we have this "knowledge" like we've been there and know it ALL and what it is.

Where is the marvel and the magic. Ohwell!

New meteors not just geminids

Dec. 11, 2012: If you're outdoors after sunset this week, be alert for meteors. Not only is the Geminid meteor shower active as Earth passes through a stream of debris from "rock comet" 3200 Phaethon, but also, say forecasters, a new meteor shower could make an appearance.


"The source of the new shower is Comet Wirtanen," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "Dust from this comet hitting Earth's atmosphere could produce as many as 30 meteors per hour."

Comet Wirtanen was discovered in 1948, just after World War II, and takes 5.4 years to orbit the sun. It reaches its closest point to the sun just outside Earth's orbit. Although this comet has skirted Earth's orbit many times, Earth has not run into its debris streams before. 2012 could be different.

Computer models run by Russian forecaster Mikhail Maslov predict as many as four stream crossings between Dec. 10th and 14th.

"This time period also includes the peak of the strong annual Geminid meteor shower," notes Cooke.

To sky watchers, he recommends having a "meteor night" after sunset on Dec. 13th, when the criss-crossing debris streams could produce the greatest combined number of shooting stars. "Meteors from the new shower (if any) will be visible in the early evening, with the Geminids making their appearance later on and lasting until dawn," he says.

The new shower doesn't have a name yet. Before naming it, astronomers will wait to see if it is real. If any meteors do materialize, they might be called "Piscids." The shower's radiant is located in the constellation Pisces, according to Maslov's dynamical models of the debris stream. Maslov also predicts that the meteors will be very slow moving, which should help novice sky watchers distinguish them from the faster Geminids.

Meteor hunting on Dec. 13-14 is a no-lose proposition because, as Cooke points out, even if the new shower is a dud, the Geminids should be great. With no glaring Moon to spoil the show, observers in rural areas should be able to see as many as 120 Geminid meteors every hour. The best time to look is during the dark hours before sunrise on Friday, Dec. 14th.

Mystery orb crash: 'It was like Armageddon'

Frightened residents in western Sweden reported seeing a bright, blue light racing across the night sky on Tuesday before an orange-coloured orb smashed into the ground in a mysterious phenomenon that has yet to be explained.

"It lit up the sky and flew over us, then we heard an explosion," witness Jessica Berg told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

"It was very weird. Uncomfortably weird."

Another witness, 24-year-old Sandra, thought the light may have been due to fireworks, but began to wonder when she never heard an accompanying pop.

"Then I thought it was a comet because it looked a little like an orb. It was red with a yellow sheen that surrounded and followed it," she told the paper.

"It looked like something was falling from the sky like in a film, like Armageddon or something.

"I've never seen anything like it."

Aviation authorities were quick to rule out initial theories that a plane had crashed somewhere deep in the forests of Värmland County.

They, as well as police, suspect the mysterious night light and thunderous blast that prompted a flood of calls from concerned residents may have been caused by a meteorite.

"We don't know, but it could have been a part of the meteor shower people have been talking about," duty officer Leif Svensson of the Värmland County police told the TT news agency.

The first calls to emergency service SOS came around 10.25pm from Forshaga, a town about 25 kilometres north of Karlstad.
