High-level defections renewed:
The Assad regime received another painful blow with the defection of its Spokesman, Jihad Makdissi, who’s considered one of the highest-ranking Christian members of Assad’s inner circle and who staunchly defended his crackdown on the 21-month revolt. Moreover, nine Syrian judges and prosecutors announced their defection to the opposition side to join the Free Syrian Judiciary Council in condemnation of the regime’s violations and human rights abuses.

Armed opposition becomes more organized:
Rebel commanders from across Syria joined forces under the Supreme Joint Leadership Military Council and elected Gen. Salim Idris to lead its General Staff of the Military and Revolutionary forces aiming at unifying the armed groups to topple the regime and bring things under control once the regime is toppled.

Regime gets ready for a chemical attack:
On Saturday, Al-Baraa battalion, member of the rebel Free Syrian Army said its fighting units ambushed a military truck in the road to Damascus airport, the truck was loaded with protective chemical gear and was meant to be handed to one of the regime’s fighting units in order to prepare for a possible chemical attack against the opposition forces. On Saturday, seven people died due to the regime fierce shelling in the Damascus suburb of Moadamiyat al-Sham, including two girls whose death was allegedly caused by a toxic gas.

Assad uses Scud missiles against rebels

WASHINGTON — President Bashar al-Assad’s forces have resorted to firing ballistic missiles at rebel fighters inside Syria, Obama administration officials said Wednesday, escalating a nearly two-year-old civil war as the government struggles to slow the momentum of a gaining insurgency.

Administration officials said that over the last week, Assad forces for the first time had fired at least six Soviet-designed Scud missiles in the latest bid to push back rebels who have consistently chipped away at the government’s military superiority.

Pakistan has withdrawn its diplomatic staff from Syria due to deteriorating security in the country, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

"We have temporarily withdrawn our diplomatic staff, including the ambassador, from Syria and they have all returned home," ministry spokesman Moazzam Ahmed Khan told AFP after his weekly press briefing.

Pakistan's three to four embassy staff and its ambassador were evacuated because of the "deteriorating security situation", the spokesman said.

Arming Syrian fighters possible if that will help topple Assad: U.S. diplomat

The United States will provide weapons for the Syrian opposition fighters if that will speed up the fall of the President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, U.S. ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, told Al Arabiya on the sidelines of “Friends of Syria” meeting on Wednesday.

“We are in favor for a political solution and if we see weapons provisions to Syrian rebels to be in support to such political solution then we will go for such possibility.”

"One of the most significant challenges for the United States—both before and after the fall of Assad's regime—is countering the growing power of al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, al Nusrah Front," Jones says. "It has close command-and-control ties to al Qaeda in Iraq, has enjoyed an increase in operatives and funding over the last several months, developed ties with extremists in Europe, and been involved in a growing number of sophisticated attacks against the Syrian regime. What is the U.S. government's strategy to weaken al Qaeda in Syria? Answering this question should be a top U.S. priority."

The Syria Chemical Weapons Saga: The Staging of a US-NATO Sponsored Humanitarian Disaster?

Modeled on the Saddam Hussein WMD narrative, the propaganda ploy concerning the alleged threat of Syria’s chemical weapons has been building up over several months.

The Western media suggests –in chorus and without evidence– that a “frustrated” and “desperate” president Bashar al Assad is planning to use deadly chemical weapons against his own people. Last week, U.S. officials revealed to NBC News that “Syria’s military has loaded nerve-gas chemicals into bombs and are awaiting final orders from al-Assad”.

Western governments are now accusing Syria of planning a diabolical scheme on the orders of the Syrian head of State. Meanwhile, the media hype has gone into full gear. Fake reports on Syria’s WMD are funneled into the news chain, reminiscent of the months leading up to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The evolving media consensus is that “the regime of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad appears to be entering its twilight” and that the “international community” has a responsibility to come to the rescue of the Syrian people to prevent the occurrence of a humanitarian disaster.

Moscow ‘Concerned’ Over Syria Chemical Weapons

MOSCOW, December 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is concerned by the prospect of Syrian chemical weapons falling into terrorist hands, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Thursday.

“The greatest danger is that parts of Syria continue to fall under the control of the opposition where extremists, terrorists, and al-Qaeda have strong positions,” he said. “That could have very serious consequences.”

“Everyone is afraid of that, including our American partners,” he said, adding that militants are already gaining control of military arsenals on the ground, including antiaircraft missiles.

That could also happen to chemical weapon stockpiles, Bogdanov said.

“This has already happened in Aleppo with the seizure of a plant manufacturing chemical components that can be used for terrorist purposes,” he said.

December 13, 2012 (LD) - As part of the US' charade in declaring support and recognition of the so-called "Syrian" opposition, it added one of the more extreme groups that make up the militant front operating inside Syria to a list of sanctioned terrorist organizations.

The idea was to have a scapegoat to pin atrocities on while the West armed, funded, and provided military support for the rest of the extremist groups ravaging Syria.

The ploy quickly fell apart however, when the US' own handpicked opposition leader, Moaz al-Khatib spoke out in protest.

US confirms Syria has used Scuds against rebels

About this issue I read this paragraph in debka:

Thursday morning, Dec. 12, they were just a kilometer from the base’s northwestern perimeter fence and advancing fast. By week’s end, Jabhat al-Nusra jihadis may have smashed into the base and seized control of the chemical stocks and Scud D planes standing there armed with chemical warheads.
The imminence of this peril forced Bashar Assad’s hand into sending Scud jets against rebel-held areas in an effort to stop their advance on the base.

And then:

If Assad fails to stop the al Qaeda fighters from reaching Al-Safira and its poison gas stores - and an al Qaeda affiliate succeeds for the first time in arming itself with chemical weapons - the United States will have to mount an air assault – not on Assad’s army but on the Syrian rebel forces fighting him, because if they do manage to seize control of the base, rebel fighters may decide to send the chemicals-tipped missiles against Assad regime centers in Damascus
