"Social media users whose use tweets and online posts to comment on a military operation could be regarded as legitimate military targets.

Australian army Land Warfare Studies Centre analyst Chloe Diggins on Thursday said a recent social media war between Israel and Hamas raised complex ethical questions about who was a combatant and therefore a legitimate military target."

I can see their logic, unfortunately (even though my reaction would be to disagree). It's similar to the argument over whether drone pilots are legitimate targets (that is n open question).

I don't think it's been tested in court, but the theory is yes.

"The Geneva Convention defines legitimate military targets as objects "which by their nature, location, purpose or use make an effective contribution to military action and whose total or partial destruction, capture or neutralisation, in the circumstances ruling at the time, offers a definite military advantage".
The convention protects civilians unless they are taking a direct part in hostilities."

Tweeting or FB is NOT a direct part in the hostilities,
making comments is NOT an effective contribution to military action.

Sheer stupidity.

Think bout it logically, if someone is tweeting military information about an active war/battle, that source of information is a ligit target to be removed to prevent spread of military info.

Yes, hamas harry is a ligit target.

This is currently in force, so opinion is not necessary or wanted, neither is the Geneva Convention. We are beyond this. Take note.

Any individual functioning in a sanctioned or unsanctioned military counter-intelligence operation is, by force of historical and international law, conducting as an enemy combatant.

For example, if an individual is purposefully giving intelligence by broadcasting troop movements to an enemy, they are an enemy combatant. If by carrier pigeon or a tweet, the result is the same for both the troops and the enemy.

You have been warned.

What about military movements posted about on this site?

A lot of people live around USAF bases, or USN ports. If you lived around Whiteman AFB and saw the B2's lifting off in mass, would you come on here to post about it?
