Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29130142 During the last 12-24 hours, virtually all quake activity has taken place in California and Alaska. An up-to-date situation for the last 24 hours can be seen here: [link to goo.gl] I'm not claiming to understand what's going on and am not making predictions here, but what I can say for sure is that the pattern has now changed and that may indicate something. Take care everyone, especially those of you at the East Coast. happens every so often. Nothing ever happens during these swarms - maybe someday but I expect not for years |

However I do have to ask if anyone noticed that Montana had a quake a few days ago? Seems strange. |

Unfortunately i think it's this kind of unproactive (that a word??) attitude that will eventually get a lot of californians killed on the day thet the big one finally hits.... Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 29130142 Finland 12/13/2012 02:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah I know you have them there, but what I'm saying it's the big picture that has changed. Now it's shaking basically only in California and Alaska, which is not typical. The swarms do mean pressure is being released, but I mean I've never seen swarming taking place in these two places for so long. Are you actually saying it's normal you have like hundreds of them within a 24 hour period over there? They are small ones I know, but still. I didn't see this on the map before, especially not combined with the virtual lack of quakes anywhere else around the world. The first time I did notice something similar was just few days ago, a week or so max. It got quiet everywhere else, it kept swarming in California and Alaska, and then few days later there was that 7.1 (originally 7.2) around Indonesia that passed without any MSM attention. Now I see the same happening again: it suddenly goes quiet everywhere else while in Alaska and California the swarms get noticeably more intensive. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 29130142 Finland 12/13/2012 03:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I only worry when we STOP shaking. Little baby quakes release pressure. I'd be more concerned living anywhere it isn't shaking, the pressure is building up. Quoting: Meggarea That's certainly so, although there's also the possibility that an increase in intensity of the swarms may indicate increased tectonic activity. I mean with these amounts of "pressure released", there must be quite a lot happening causing that pressure to exist in the first place. And that's what I think may have increased, so if the swarms stop, then that could be a final warning sing of a the really big one coming. As far as I can tell, California has had these increased numbers of swarms for at least few weeks now, quakes happening basically between few minutes, half on hour tops. I keep an eye on the last 24 hours statistics basically all the time, and that gives you at least some kind of capability to notice when things change. It would of course be good to have some numbers and long time statistics available too, but I don't and don't have the motivation to dig into them either. A good friend of mine plotted out a nice chart of all-time EQ statistics, I'll ask if he could kindly come here and post the link himself. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 29130142 Finland 12/13/2012 03:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP needs to study the ring of fire to better understand that this isn't anything special. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29348827 I do understand "the ring of fire". I'm saying, I see something happening here that's not typical even after considering the nature of the area. Let me ask you something: do you take seriously the so called professional's views that there is a big one heading for California, and that it's actually already quite a bit late? Because if you do, I wonder the lack of interest in the possibility there may be something to what I think I'm seeing here. May be I'm really just imagining all this, but simply ignoring it when someone who has actually been staring on that quake map for months in a row says he thinks something is not how it used to be - I think that signals lack of interest in self-survival. You guys have smell of sulfur in the air there these days. Perhaps it's all just normal and I definitely hope nothing's going to happen. I have many good friends and business partners in the US and am just genuinely worried about what's going on. Don't want anything to happen to them or anyone for that matter. |

Quoting: ººEATºº If there is going to be a big quake it will be within 24 hours. We'll see. I'd start counting from when the swarms quiet down. On the other hand, it's now so quiet everywhere else (apart from Alaska and California) that this could be a precursor of a single big hit with a bunch of 5+ aftershocks on the other side of the plate some time soon, anywhere from Russia to Japan to Indonesia to Australia. If I had to guess a time frame, I'd say anything from now to three days from now. But, I'm not saying, since I definitely don't think I've (yet) got the data and deep enough understanding of the big picture I could actually be even remotely sure about anything. |
