Phone interview - any tips? - It's over, went well - have a real interview now!
I've been applying to try and get in at this company for over a year now, and it's known as hard to get in to. I got a call this morning from one of their human resources people, who scheduled a phone interview with me for 2pm today (eastern time). I've never done a phone interview. Any tips for me? haha Really nervous.....

The phone interview went very well. I have an in person interview now on Tuesday. Super excited. =)

I've had a couple phone interviews and was a little less nervous because it was on the phone. One plus of the phone interview is that you can have a cheat sheet. You can write down a few key points you want to make and have that with you when they call. Make sure it is quiet and speak clearly. Good luck to you.

Chances are your not the only one getting an interview, they mostly schedule multiple people at a time. My tip, be yourself. Make them laugh, and don't just tell them what they want to hear. Mention why your the best candidate, and please don't lie...they'll just call you out on those skills face to face during the next interview lol. Facebook the interviewer, find their hobbies/likes and connect.

Know the answers to these questions; hf

What is your current job function and responsibilities?

2. Why are you applying for this position?

3. Why did you leave your last job?

4. Why did you decide to go back to school? /Why did you change careers?

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

6. What lessons did you learn from your last job that you think can be applied here?

7. What are your best skills?

8. What do you consider your biggest fault/major weakness?

9. Do you prefer to work by yourself or with others?

10. Of the positions you have held, which did you like the most? The least?

11. What can you do for us that someone else can’t do?

12. What qualifications do you have that relate to the position?

13. What new skills or capabilities have you developed recently?

14. Give me an example from a previous job where you’ve shown initiative.

15. Tell me about your experience with a project that didn’t go the way you expected.

16. What have been your greatest accomplishments recently?

17. What is important to you in a job?

18. What motivates you in your work?

19. What have you been doing since your last job?

20. What qualities do you find important in a coworker?

21. What qualities do you find important in a supervisor?

Seriously.
Have your resume in front of you as well as all info for references.
Sit up straight.
Hold the phone correctly and speak into the right spot
Speak clearly, forget all slang and that kind of stuff...
Be polite, please and thank you for the opportunity...
Be prepared to answer unusual questions....have you researched this company, what do we do, what can you contribute how would you handle an irate customer...
Have an answer for the "where do you see yourself in 5 years" question
Google the company and read the web site thoroughly
Pen and paper in front of you too.
Yes to the response, close all doors and windows, tv, radio off, no barking dogs or roaring lions, don't do anything else while talking on the phone like unload the dishwasher, etc. (i actually had someone do this)
if I think of more, I'll be back.
Good luck.

Re: Phone interview - any tips? - It's over, went well - have a real interview now!
Yes, I plan to print out a copy of my resume to keep in front of me. Hubby is home today too so he'll be on toddler duty with our 1 year old during that time, haha My older two are in school. I'll def. keep paper and pen handy - good idea!

Thanks for the responses. realistically, I know this phone interview is probably just step 1 - as in, if I make it past this, then I'll have a face to face one. Just hope it goes well!

Thank you

This job would be exactly what I want (health care - but more the office work stuff - registering patients, insurance, etc). It's only per diem to start - so random hours, crappy hours, but that's how you have to start at this place (so I've been told).

Ask a lot of questions

interview them as well and

ask questions that get them to talk about the culture of the company

If they are going to treat you bad ; you need to find it out now.
