Google starts censoring porn in image searches
...because it thinks people will be offended.

What if Google decides to censor images of Jesus because atheists get offended?

What's wrong with this. kids use google for school. I wouldn't want them coming across pictures of gay dudes while researching.

Re: Google starts censoring porn in image searches
It about damn time! I regularly use GIS for researching guitars and within 4 or 5 rows of an image search I start to get porn. No, I dont like to and shouldnt have to filter my searches. I get less results that way. I also have children that are often times in the same room. There is no reason porn should be popping up on my GIS when looking for something harmless just because a keyword coincides with some random porn name, act or title.

Anyone that want to look at porn knows where to find it. I'm with Google 100% on this.

Re: Google starts censoring porn in image searches
It was mentioned on the site also that if you add porn or things related to it next to any search term, you'll get the results you want. I like the idea in a way that you can tailor the search that way and kids can be protected otherwise, BUT.....it sets a bad precedent in that they can now basically censor any image they want if they so choose porn included. So they could hypothetically remove it at any search if they wanted.

ALSO......a good point was made as to the reporting objectionable images goes.....to whit it goes this way:

"What do you do when people complain about the gov't and ISP's censoring them?

Give them a button that's one click away that allows *THEM* to declare things "offensive". When you have a hammer, everything's a nail. Now instead of a hammer, everyone is able to TELL GOOGLE "this is offensive. Don't show me this.

We are now the ones who will censor."

It's dead on in my estimation......

Interesting.

I find most religion highly offensive, since it leads people to deluded behavior. Let's go after that information next.

Also, any political views that I don't like should go to.

That's great news! Google is a private company.. they can do whatever they want. They're not obligated to deliver porn to your browser.

Go down to your neighborhood smut shop if you want that stuff.. where you will be carded for proof of age and where children are NOT allowed in, under penalty of law. Why should the internet be any different?

Do you understand the ramifications of something like this though? Once you give them a foothold to censor one thing, they'll want to censor something else, and something else, and then something else after that. Who's to say they won't target something YOU like next? And besides that, there was NOTHING wrong with the old system.....if a family member didn't want his or her child to look at certain things you only had to turn on the safesearch and they couldn't see it, simple. This was not needed.

Bottom line though is passivity is what ends up leaving us without any rights at all by leaving such huge power unchecked.

These things always seem good IN THEORY, but when you look closer there is something more sinister going on.

Kids don't just use the internet at home under the eye of their parents. Internet connected computers are everywhere. It's not the Wild West anymore. The onus is on the purveyors of smut to make sure it's only being delivered to adults. That's the way it is for shops. Like I said it's a private corporation.

Still, this is just not a good idea, it sets a BAD precedent, cause as I said before once you allow them to censor one thing, you let them censor something else and on and on and on, where do you stop? Do not think this can not be abused, because it can and will be given half the chance.

And quite frankly, maybe parents need to start TALKING to their kids about sex, rather than demonizing it. Maybe then the moment a child sees a boob or something likely it all holy hell isn't gonna break loose. Just a thought. You can't shield them from the world forever.

Well if we don't protect our freedoms to search for the things we want to without them telling us we cannot, we WILL lose them. Do you want us to become like China? Cause steps like this among others starts us down that road........don't think it can't happen.

You missed my point entirely. The whole reason people are so fucked up in the head about sex is that because it is this HUGE taboo as you grow up, don't talk about it, don't think about it, and whatever you do don't act on it. That messes with our minds.

Sex is a natural thing, and the hormones we feel growing up, the desires we have are natural, normal, there is not a thing wrong with them. But when you teach a child the opposite, for one, you BEG for rebellion as they are gonna want the things you tell them not to anyway, which hurts both them because they are flying without a net and your relationship to them, because they won't talk to you about these things as you won't have their trust, and two, they will not be equipped to handle themselves not being taught how to safely.

They're GONNA be exposed to these things, be it tame or not so tame things. If it's not the internet it will be somewhere else. Do you want them to be ready to handle it when they come up and be able to talk to you about it, or would you rather they just hide it away from you and go off on their own creating all sorts of problems for themselves? Because the more you demonize all of this, the more you ask for all the problems you see with kids. From teen pregnancies to abortions, to STD's, it is a direct result of lack of parenting and education about sexuality. Telling them no just does not work.

Maybe not, BUT.....is this the fault of the culture or the parents for not being there to process things for them? I contend it's the latter. I WAS never told much about sex beyond it was dirty and wrong, sinful to lust and all of that, and it really fucked up my head because all the while I had these urges and desires, and places to explore them even that I felt I couldn't but still couldn't resist from acting out on. It was only when I realized I was NORMAL and was free to act or not based on what I wanted that I became more comfortable in my sexual nature and not so ashamed of it anymore. But for YEARS I had so much guilt and shame over it all. If I was a betting man, I'd bet at least some of your peer kids had similar experiences. I could be wrong, but it's just a hunch.

We cannot shield kids from the world, they will be exposed to it whether we want them to or not. What we need to do is be there to help them deal with what they are exposed to when it happens, and many I don't believe do. We spend more time trying to keep them from seeing things, than we do about educating them on how to handle them if they come up. It does them a disservice IMO.

Always remember, ultimately, to never follow any person's belief. Your relationship with God is between you and God.

If nothing else, remember this: religion = subservience, control and conformity, the same template as EVERY government

"Most believers would kill truth if truth threatened their religion." L. K. Washburn

"This crime called blasphemy was invented by priests for the purpose of defending doctrines not able to take care of themselves." Robert Ingersoll

"If anyone wants to know how God feels, it's a warm light as if the sun is poking through dark clouds and lifting your spirits with pure joy."

Re: Google starts censoring porn in image searches
We don't "allow" or "disallow" private corporations to do anything, they do what they want to do. And you know this issue goes WAY beyond "seeing a boob or two" don't try to paint a picture of porn as something innocuous and normal, it's not.

In my experience growing up and now as a parent, are that the kids who were and have become "messed up" are those who were exposed to sexuality at too early an age. I saw this with my own peer group, and now with my kids peer group. Kids who are in an unrestricted environment where they are exposed to "adult topics" at a young age end up getting into all kids of troubles with rampant promiscuity and substance problems. It's too much too soon.

What is seen cannot be unseen.

I'm sorry your parents were messed up.. mine weren't but I was also protected from dangerous things. The world is a much different place now.. you no longer have to go out of your way to be exposed to dangerous materials. I think the results are evident in our society today. Perverts everywhere. But we don't need to place the "rights" of adult pervs at a higher valuation than the rights of children to grow up in a safe and relatively clean environment.

I mean.. why not just expose them to gory disembowelments and beheadings too, at 5 years old, just "explain" to them what's going on? No, it doesn't work that way. Children are very impressionable (and so are adults actually) and the mind is easily warped, especially when young. They don't have the same cognitive abilities. They need to be protected.

It's like.. here's a twinkie and a plate of broccoli side by side. First eat this twinkie, then I'm going to explain to you why that wasn't a good idea.. now eat this broccoli to counteract the effect. No, the damage is already done.

it is true that most stupid people are conservative.
