Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) rules require commercials to have the same average volume as the programs they accompany. In the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, Congress directed the FCC to establish these rules, which went into effect on December 13, 2012.

There will still be plenty of reasons for me to not watch television, however that is a good and sensible piece of news!

I don't see how it did the advertisers any good when people automatically hit mute on the remote when their ads came on. I would still do that anyway though, if I was ever around a television set.

I dont even watch regular television and havent for yrs..but yes I'm celebrating cause I am very familiar with the loud commercials. Besides we have less and less to celebrate now days so let people celebrate even if it is trivial. And BTW your a bitch!

If I don't want to hear a commercial I choose one of the following options :

- take headphones off
- press the mute button
- fast forward

I choose the following option:

Ban companies from jacking the volume of commercials to ear-drum rupture levels.

They don't do that. Broadcasters in the US have technical specifications that they must meet. They do not turn up the volume when a commercial comes on.

Commercials may sound louder simply because the advertiser has jam-packed the soundtrack of the commercial with sound. One might say that the amount of sound increases during a commercial. But the volume level does not.

This doesn't mean you're not still being "programmed" by these advertisements. Turn the TV off and make a real life.

We desperately need this in the UK. The mentality of advertisers amazes me. Obviously playing the adverts loud will make us run out and buy their stuff.
