The ancient city of Sidon, in Phoenicia (now, Lebanon)
Sidon or Saida is the third-largest city in Lebanon. It is located in the Governorate South of Lebanon, on the Mediterranean coast, about 40 km (25 mi) north of Tyre and 40 km (25 mi) south of the capital Beirut. In Genesis, Sidon is the son of Canaan the grandson of Noah. Its name coincides with the modern Arabic word for fishery.

Sidon has been inhabited since very early in prehistory. The archaeological site of Sidon II shows a lithic assemblage dating to the Acheulean, whilst finds at Sidon III include a Heavy Neolithic assemblage suggested to date just prior to the invention of pottery.[1] It was one of the most important Phoenician cities, and may have been the oldest. From here, and other ports, a great Mediterranean commercial empire was founded.

Hey OP, there is a point where the meridian of 33 degrees East crosses the Equator...

It's located in Lake Victoria, Africa, and it's very close to the point where the Nile River begins.

This point can be considered "the source" of the waters of the Nile...

Cool, uh?

Cool thread. I'm interested in ancient Phoenicia, their homeland along the coast of Lebanon, and the huge sea trading network they created around the Mediterranean, of which most of their colonies are still major ports today, 3,500 years later.

Phoenicians created the Alphabet (representing sounds, and not ideas like the previous scripts), and were responsible for spreading it along the Mediterranean coasts...

Some people claim the Phoenician navigators reached the Americas, and had contacts with pre-Mayan Central American civilizations...

Sidon was the oldest Phoenician city.

And Sidon is very close to the "point 33", the point where the parallel of latitude 33 degrees, 33 minutes North crosses the meridian of longitude 33 degrees, 33 minutes East

It just can't get any closer to that "point 33" because it's located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea...
