That's what happens with private, "for profit" hospitals. McJobs in the name of "efficiency" and "shareholder value."

At least up here even they guy mopping the puke of the floor gets paid a living wage + benefits.

May want to check the corporate charter on this hospital. Ours is an eleemosynary hospital and the docs and corporate heads all do very well on large incomes. Just saying, the way things are going it doesn't have to be a "private for profit" to underpay staff.

...such as paid shillery where you get to post neofascist statements all day EVERY day like Brief. All you have to do is post pro-authority, anti-freedom, pro-violence comments and then you get paid quarterly.

Just watch Brief's posts (not hard to find since he is here all day every day) if you're not sure about which themes to include in your posts. His themes rarely change. He never starts threads, just makes negative comments on other people's threads. You might say that makes him a "troll" but trolls don't get paid.

So sharpen those "skills"! You'll be nuking muzzies and giving state troopers handjobs in no time!

then start your own hospital and pay yourself what you're worth...
 Quoting: BRIEF

The "start your own hospital" response is waaaay out of line for the issue being discussed.

Hospitals operate under a CON "Certificate of Need" so that medical services are not duplicated. If there is service in your area, you cannot get another CON.

More than half the reimbursements (billing paid to hospitals) n most instances is paid by taxes Medicare, Medicaid and other taxpayer paid benefits. In many instances these benefit payments are limited in a jurisdiction. For example, there can only be just so many beds qualifying for those benefit payments.

That someone should "start your own hospital and pay yourself what you're worth..." is an outlandish statement from anyone who claims to be in healthcare. You know better.

to get the signature was like begging congress out of session

Please read through summaries of some of Baylor University's studies on healthcare and costs. Baylor has a superior reputation in healthcare studies and statistics.

According to Baylor, the approximate cost in TAX dollars to educate one physician is $10,000,000 - that's ten million dollars. The normal situation is for a doc to take out $250,000 in student loans toward the medical education.

Doctors in our hospitals reimbursed by Medicare and Medicaid are AMA docs. (American Medical Association) They are a brotherhood, just like fire fighters, police and some other professions. They take care of their own, support and promote their own and tightly control the control of money to and through the brotherhood.

If you believe that a rawboned redneck with a high IQ coming out of the backwoods can get a medical degree - well, think again. It ain't a gonna happen.

I'd just like to know what this new catch phrase "living wage" is..... 50k/year? 100k/year? The same or more than the owner makes?

As several have noted...those who mismanage money can make 250k/year and not pay their bills correctly.

Anyone been told what this "living wage" is??

Instead of paying a decent wage so that their employees can eat and support their families, this hospital has asked their employees to donate canned good donations for the lower paid staff.
 Quoting: Unbelievable 1340294

Our hospital used to let people order food through the foodservice for a discount. Eggs, milk, all that, in bulk. Great for large families.
That seems like a better idea, because its just a perk, not charity. Like a 20% discount.

Listen up everyone. Brief is a miserable human being, narcistic, nasty and very very lonely. His days are filled with a job he hates and so he comes to GLP to relive himself. Remember when your Mom told you to ignore the bully and he will go away? The same applies here. You are not going to change his loathsome attitude but if yopu ignore his posts he will get bored and move on to another hread to beat up someone else. I'm off to another thread, it stinks in here. Thank you that's what I thought it was. Just wanted to see if anyone can put an actual number value to it. So in terms of living wage, if you have enough to do that, then they are being compensated fairly. If not, why not change jobs, move to another city/state? Drop the portable devices, expensive clothes, on and on.

People are told BEFORE they start a job what they will be paid. They choose to accept or decline the offer.

As one post said..."maybe the company doesn't have the money to give raises". This may be what they can do to help.

And I'd bet the doctors are NOT the ones contributing.

Where I work the CEO makes about $1 million a year, and yet I can't get a raise any higher than 15 cents. So now there is a move to bring in unions.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25672410

The slavepital I worked at several years ago..

we first started out caring for 4-5 patients a night.

I worked night shift. 12 hours.

Then, the slavepital decided profit margin was not high enough.

We had our night shift differential taken away and had to care for 8 patients to 9 a night; and cut an RN.

The CEOs

drove new cars that next year....

I quit and never went back to slavepital
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29134382

I worked as a CNA. The course was $1200. I was paid $9/hr to start. We were always short-staffed. Patients did not get bathed as they should (amongst other things). The RNs were gods and could not be bothered to lift a finger. Even the LPNs did not want to help and we were forced to do two-person lifts single-handedly. If we waited until we had enough help we were bitched at by patients' families and by the RNS. We got a new DON (Director of Nursing) who couldn't be bothered to drop off our hours so our checks were help up for a whole two weeks because she was getting her hair and hails done. She put in a retroactive draconian attendance policy, effectively gutting the workforce. -.- I love working healthcare.

My point is, they could stand to trim the fat , instead of coming up with an insulting idea. Or if they cannot afford to, then get a new plan. It sounds like this idea just didnt go through people for approval.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29134382

Agreed. Topic got sorta derailed with all the NASA/athletes/CEO inciting stuff, heehee. But that's Brief's job, and somebody’s gotta do it.

Thing is, the hospital acknowledged the problem: they don't pay all their employees enough to live beyond poverty level, to the point that they recognized that their employees need help.

They obviously don't feel any obligation to help, feeling like Brief does. They need their money for bonuses and higher pay for the CEOs.

Solution: Let the employees who they pay a little better pick up the tab! Let THEM pay what the hospital does not by going out and buying food. They're suckers, they have compassion. Sucker employees, heehee.

Now, go to the Dollar Store, and donate for Christmas presents for military families. You see, our government, er, I mean, we taxpayers, apparently don't pay our military enough to buy their families Christmas presents. A precedent is set. Let the taxpayers, who are already paying military wages, pick up another tab!

This is the way our society thinks. Let the workers pay. And pay. And Pay. Under no circumstances should any company profit or executive pay be compromised. We have stockholders! We have skills! We are better and the fact that we make more shows it! Er, did I get the gist of what soem posters here believe in thier, er, compassionate ever lovin' lil hearts?

Car payment> for a used car ; no frills
gas> to and from work ;not over the road trips or extended entertainment
One movie at a movie theater ; "big spender" and none of that fattening popcorn

Thank you that's what I thought it was. Just wanted to see if anyone can put an actual number value to it. So in terms of living wage, if you have enough to do that, then they are being compensated fairly. If not, why not change jobs, move to another city/state? Drop the portable devices, expensive clothes, on and on.

People are told BEFORE they start a job what they will be paid. They choose to accept or decline the offer.

As one post said..."maybe the company doesn't have the money to give raises". This may be what they can do to help.

Nice idea. We are a family of four living in a motel room. The cost of living in our area is insane. Jobs are scarce. We were paycheck to paycheck until my husband lost our job. Now we don't have the money to move or even put down on an apartment. We are NOT using public assistance of any sort. We are surviving on Ramen noodles at times. This is as good as it gets in this area for now. AND- this is better than we were doing a few months ago when we were sleeping in the truck with our kids ~.^

Just think

Bare minimum

But, when the global economic crash comes, it is the poor who will do well

The poor are use to having to be creative in their living.

The pampered rich; will not fare as well

Who died during the great depression of 1929?? a lot of bankers ; wealthy

this is a bit off topic but on my mind a lot lately
