If you were a CEO for a big corporation would you opt to make less so your workers could make more?

If YOU were a CEO would you opt out of significantly less money so lets say your average worker could make more? If this were possible of course. Lets say for the sake of argument you made 5 mil per year. Would YOU drop your wage to 1 mil per year so and give your employess higher raises?

Re: If you were a CEO for a big corporation would you opt to make less so your workers could make more?
I would, who needs 5 million a year? The CEO of Costco only makes 500,000 per year and pays his employees very well and benefits also. This is the kind of people we need in todays society, not Hedgefund managers who make 75 million a year and contribute literally nothing to the life and wellbeing of others.

My brother has done this for the last eight years.

Still lives in the same house he bought 31 years ago and drives a 1991 chevy pickup. He does have a sporty car for the weekends...it's over 10 years old.

His employees (including me) are paid very well and have great health insurance. We all including the families are very loyal and will do anything to aid in the company.

My father was like this also.

Dad, always used to tell us; it's a great thing to makes lots of money but, ot's no fun unless you share with the ones that helped you make it.

No.

A CEO is paid to bring big profits. Biggest the better.

But if it was MY company (instead of just running it) you can bet I would share profits with my workers.

Different strategies apply.

I would still give myself a hefty paycheck, but no, I wouldn't make 500x what a worker makes. Why? Inequality never works out well in the long run. Ask Marie Antoinette.

What is the purpose of business, asshat? Is it to provide jobs and benefits to people? No. Is it to supply a product or service? No. Is it to serve the community? No. The purpose of any business, from a kid's lemonade stand to a billion dollar corporation, is to MAKE MONEY FOR THE OWNERS!!!

I wish I could truly.

We don't have a turnover rate.
The last person I hired was in 2005.
We hire the employee kids when out for the summer or before the ship off tot he military or collge. Only to instill some work ethics in them. Keep them from getting bored and in trouble.

Not bashing you at all but we have found out throught the years it didn't really matter how educated one is. The more the better but there is a point. It's all about performing. You either get it/do it or you don't. It's all about teamwork and loyalty.

I like that idea, but don't give the bonus to the whole staff, only those who actually contributed. There will always be folks on board who will do just enough to keep their jobs and let the others go above and beyond if they know there will be a bonus either way.

Re: If you were a CEO for a big corporation would you opt to make less so your workers could make more?
I think there comes a point where more money would not make a difference in your lifestyle. If you have more than enough to live high off the hog for generations, what's the point of being greedy for more?

I think it use to be this way. The 'boss' of the company was a wealthy man, but company employees were paid a living wage as well and, so, company loyalty was high. People didn't switch jobs as much as they do now in order to move up. They stayed for 20-30 years and retired at the same job. Boss still had the big mansion, boat, limo, but he wasn't a greedy swine and had a higher sense of morality.

Now a days, morality and company loyalty are out the window, as they go hand in hand. The boss will get rid of your ass before your old enough to retire so he can hire some illegal for a quarter of what he paid you. He's addicted to his profit margin, and laughs at all the little peons doing his bidding for chicken feed and shoddy insurance benefits, if even that. He doesn't give two fucks if your kid needs an operation to save his life or if your family is being evicted. He doesn't even want to hear about it. Do your job and shut up. You are not human to him, you are just a resource.

for the most part, it would not help. Most companies where the CEO makes that much, have thousands of employees, and when you break down the math, it works out to less than a buck a week per employee.

This isn't about forcing other people to split their money, the OP is simply asking if you had the good fortune to become a well off CEO would you take a wage cut so your OWN employees could be a bit better off. That's it.

I would give each employee their own private vending machine and a personalized beverage of their choice. I would encourage them to eat as much as they want to ensure that they become big fat asses and then reward them with trips to the roller coaster theme park.

I would give their children free scholarships to study archery abroad and a dental plan just for their spouses.

I would make them all take numerous breaks throughout the day and host random snowball fights with snow cones to break the monotony.

Agreed, perhaps a performace related pay structure which would weed out the lazy oiks who can be replaced bu more dedicated employees and bonuses for those who went beyond the call and duty of their role. Also I woukd like to offer things like turkeys at xmas and family days to keep morale.

"WELL OFF" is relative. A person starving considers YOU well-off.

Why not share your wealth?

Most people who make 250K a year are living pay check to pay check just like you and I. They have a bigger house and bigger bills but it is essentially the same situation.

Is it only fair to make rich people give up things they have for the betterment of the whole or does it apply to us all?

They don't get it, according to most Republicans, Fox News viewers etc. the idea of millionaires or billionaires paying their employees anything above minimum wage is socialism or class warfare.
