True story. My G/F dad and mom were married in a catholic church by a priest. They had five children, then divorced. The dad paid the church ten grand for an annulment. The church accepted it and made all of his children bastards.

My mother and stepfather had their previous marriages annulled so they could marry in the church. I thought it was asinine then, I think it's even more asinine now. BTW, we kids were assured that it didn't make us "bastards". Gotta love it.

A great deal of confusion regarding Divorce and annulments in the Church.

1. Divorce is not allowed in the Church

2. An Annulment is granted if one or both parties after investigation found that a Sacramental Marriage was not valid for a variety of reasons.

3. So the Church does not speak to the issue of civil divorces in regards to its authority.

4. The Church only speaks on the issue of sacramental marriage. Both parties would have to fully understood and lived out that sacramental marriage for it to be valid.

5.The issue of being a Bastard was historically a civil issue regarding property rights. Therefore annulments within the Church have nothing to do with this.
