No offense but that guy doesn't seem to be too prepared ..

The best thing he had was anti-diarrhea medication ..

Gary is very prepared. He was listing OTC medications, not every first aid item. I believe he's a paramedic, so probably more knowledgable than most. He puts out a lot of quality youtube videos. You should check out his channel.

When preppers put out a post, it's often tailored to one specific aspect of preparedness. Many of us spend a huge amount of time to research and discuss topics from lots of angles that you might not be aware of. If you watched the whole video, he discusses things like ORS, in addition to anti-diarrhea meds, but since that's not OTC he doesn't talk about it. He discusses the method for metabolically processing certain medicines through the kidneys or liver as well. It's pretty in depth for such short video.

If you want a long first aid video, then it would potentially be extremely long and most people would sit through it. If you're looking for in-depth ones about a variety of subjects, then you might want to view the Patriot Nurse videos on youtube.

It's very easy to criticize. Sometimes it's better to listen.

Re: Top OTC Medications for the Prepper/Survivalist
good video OP.....

my top choice is Mucinex-DM. I woke up with a wicked burning soar throat a few weeks ago and took 2 600mg tablets. 30 minutes later the soar throat was 95% gone. I've never had anything knock out a soar throat like that before.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28870983

Best thing THAT PREVENTS sore throat is Vitamin D3. I've noticed that after taking 5000 IU a day 4 years ago mainly to prevent sinus infection.

Works too good to believe that it actually works.
 Quoting: AlcoholicRunner

Liquid? Capsuls? or does it matter? what brand do u take?

I'll still stock Mucinex-DM though....

No one needs to challenge the reason to prepare. Just ask the people in NJ/NY hit by Sandy. These people actually believed the government was able to handle such a large catastrophe. This incident proves that there is a need by all families to have at least there months worth of supplies, spefically food/water, etc. Good post. Education and sharing is paramount in order to survive a regular day to day life, let alone periods of strife.

Did anyone mention cough medication?
Point is not to make a feel good kit, but something that can be used to save life and limb when no other aid is available.
Limiting yourself to trial size drugstore preps is short sighted, and you have to do what needs to be done and not simply what is comfortable.
For example, chuldrens dosing and solutions is a waste of money and space, your gonna have to figure out how to shave pills based on proportion. Dont waste money of baby aspirin just cut the tablet into quarters
Reactions to aspirin are rare to being almost imaginary.
Asthma is a problem, and there is nothing for that in there, like concentrated caffiene or chocolate or tea or a primatine inhaler. Also for chest pain, if you cant get nitro, you can use double base shotgun flake because it has nitro in it, and you shouldnt need much.
You should have a container of glycerine for an emolient, lubricant and humectant, and some potassium permanganate for antisepsis, and know that combining a small amount of the two will make a fire instantly in an emergency

somehow the concept of 'emergency' or 'urgency' gets lost in this thread

Good job as always Gary!

Have ingredients for Oral Rehydrating Solution (ORS) to deal with issues of dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea. It's just sugar, salt, and clean water.
[link to rehydrate.org]

I would include Ivy-Dry as that help dry up a bad case of poison ivy. I also would buy some preparation H or similar as that applied to a rash will work WAY BETTER. It contains jewelweed extract that's why it works. In less than sanitary condition, poison ivy or any contact dermatitis will become infected very easily.

Plain saline is good to have on hand in case you need to irrigate a wound or eye.

Naproxen is an especially fine analgesic for back pain. It works when someone has bad arthritis and the other won't touch it.

Use generics as much as possible to save money.

Tea tree oil works well in countless ways. It can be diluted.

A wonderful thing to keep on hand when vomiting is Emetrol. It has phosphoric acid in it, the same ingredient as Coke. That ingredient reduces the stomach contractions when combined with sugar.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1110734

I wont be without Ivarest.
It is so good for so many things.Poison Ivy yes but any itch or infected sore dries up almost overnight in most instances. It even works on pimples and if you have a sore that looks like it could turn to MRSA this will really stop it if it hasnt gotten to far along.

There's some belief that coconut oil is very helpful for people who are hypothyroid. Since they'll run out of their synthroid, having some coconut oil might help. It's supposed to help people with dementia, but that's hardly going to be of any help in a SHTF situation.

Apple cider vinegar is one of the oldest health supplements. See the work of Dr. Jarvis in Folk Medicine:
[link to www.amazon.com]

Hydrogen Peroxide actually damages cellular tissue, and you must carefully use it on wounds because of that. Sometimes people try using it on their teeth, and if you've ever read about that, you know that it will degrade the gums when people attempt it. Not recommended.

the biggest problem with this thread is that it pretends you can do anything with 20 dollars and a book to read.
That is so far from the truth as to be laughable.
Preparing for a anything more dangerous that a picnick the the backyard is more expensive and much more time consuming than presented.
You dont have the time to read a book when someones stopped breathing or has collapsed to the ground.
You have to know what to do if some body part has come off or has been penetrated by a weapon of any sort, and having a panicked sitdown with a book you cant understand is not gonna cut it.

Re: Top OTC Medications for the Prepper/Survivalist
I personally have three bins/tubs with my first aid supplies and even with that much stuff, I still haven't been able to take care of everything... there's still a few things I have seen in this thread that I need to add!

I have one for internal medicine (meds that you actually consume, such as pills, antibiotics, capsules, drops, syrups, etc), one tub for hygiene (feminine needs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, q-tips, deodorant, etc) and one tub for wound care (plastic wrap, antiseptics, analgesics, alcohol, peroxide, saline, bandages, creams, salves and ointments, etc).

Recently I had an allergic reaction to some new mascara I tried that caused my eyes to get all red and irritated -- and that was when I realized that I didn't have any eye care products -- so saline, eye drops, etc... all that stuff got bought and put into the kit.

You can never have everything you need and still be 'mobile' so the best you can do is cover the basics thoroughly and make do when a situation arises.

just remember that when you broadcast the claim that youre bringing or prepared with first aide supplies to care for others, imagine what happens when the need arises and all you have are the equivalent of scoobiedoo vitamins.
Some folk might take any shortcomings very very personally and seek compensation of some sort.
First and foremost this thread feeds into the 'one man army' fantasies of those that persist in being inexperienced and superficial and living in a world of their own creation.
THis thread also feeds into the "I'll wait til things go bad before I do anything mindset' unaware that it's always harder to reclaim ground that you've given away

Does anyone know if there is any alternative treatment for thyroid replacement hormone? I know there are herbs that are recommended to "aid" deficient thyroid & adrenal function, but I had to have my thyroid gland removed because of severe Hashimoto's (autoimmune disease), so there isn't anything left for herbs to "aid".

I currently take Armour Thyroid, not the synthetic stuff. Does anyone know if there is a way to make a "DIY" preparation at home from either animal or human thyroid glands that would keep the worst of the terrible symptoms at a manageable level?

I dont know what you do, but you sure dont understand what thyroid hormone replacment is about.
If you think it can be substituted by aromatherapy or reiki or sunshine or other self indulgent crap you really need to stop giving out advice that can kill or cripple others.
You cannot live without a functioning thyroid or specific thyroid hormone replacement, you will start shutting down and die, as in dead, permanently but before you go you will be incapacitated for some variable, though seemingly interminable, time

Can't afford a kilo of meds all at once, and the doc won't write a scrip for but 6 mos at a time even if I could. So pharmacy raiding would probably be a necessity, but I'd be competing with thousands of others and that would be a good way to get killed that I'd like to avoid if possible.

I don't really care if 'donor' animal thyroids are tasty or not, although I don't think just eating them would be much help. Armour is made from dessicated animal thyroids, but I don't know how to concentrate the active ingredients once you've dried and powdered the gland. That's why I was asking if anyone knew of an information source for how to make your own DIY preparation. There are always people dieing, so harvesting glands from very recently dead humans could be an option too, I guess. Maybe just hang out near a pharmacy and do a little harvesting on the losers of the battle for pills :)

you sound like you figured it out pretty much.
I dont know exactly they process the thyroid, but dessicated means 'dried' and I dont think they do much to it.
I dont know if it's a pork origin or mixed or other, should that matter, but you can ask them.
Since it's a natural product the actual concentrations of t3 and t4 thyroid hormones is variable, that's why it's not popular with most endocrinologists.
Sad fact is that when the pharmacies are closed for any length of time, those with chronic organ diseases especially asthma, cardiac disease, diabetes and copd will quickly die off by the millions per week.

Re: the thyroid issue

Well, the issue will be how much to take. The thyroid produces a lot of hormones, some that we don't know or understand, besides also containing the parathyroid glands (four little areas) that produce calcitonin. That method will be so out there, that it'll very difficult to get the correct dosage.

The main issue I see is one of prions. Prions are a little understood folded protein that is not life as we know it. Consuming animal prions can cause things like BSE or mad cow disease. As such, I sure couldn't recommend it, but I'm sure that some people may try such things to compensate for a lack of sythesized thyroid hormone (Synthroid). Probably the majority of survivors will experience the affects of their hypothyroidism (dry hair, suseptibility to cold, dry skin, etc). Yes, some survivors may harvest medicines from drugstores post-collapse. But when those run out, then that's it.

Synthroid increases metabolism and so people who try to diet and fail sometimes ask for a prescription of Synthroid, legitimately or otherwise. It will speed things up so that you loose weight but it also makes you feel terribly nervous and agitated. Sounds horrible. I'd rather eat less.

The issue by the way is similar for diabetics and insulin. I'm sure some people may try eating cow pancreas. Can you imagine trying to determine if it's fresh enough or has any efficacy whatsoever. It's why they especially have it rough.

Not many people die from being hypothyroid, but it will be uncomfortable. People used to live with it prior to 1950 or so. Today many people post-45 are taking Sythroid...it's one of the most common drugs taken.

You cannot live without a functioning thyroid or specific thyroid hormone replacement, you will start shutting down and die, as in dead, permanently but before you go you will be incapacitated for some variable, though seemingly interminable, time

Thanks but I actually DO understand as I have low-functionig thyroid and chose NOT to go with replacement and am trying to boost production of my own. AND AC's question was in regards to a SHTF scenario and not what she can run out and grab when she goes to the market later.

paralegal, right?
you love to play with details but miss the big picture and hate to admit youre not the authority.

Paralegal? LMAO.

No, I am in no way an authority. But I thought this was a SHTF - what to do about it in an end of the world scenario Thread and not an EXPERTS-ONLY-PLEEZ thread.
