Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1310640 I dont know what you do, but you sure dont understand what thyroid hormone replacment is about. If you think it can be substituted by aromatherapy or reiki or sunshine or other self indulgent crap you really need to stop giving out advice that can kill or cripple others. You cannot live without a functioning thyroid or specific thyroid hormone replacement, you will start shutting down and die, as in dead, permanently but before you go you will be incapacitated for some variable, though seemingly interminable, time Thanks but I actually DO understand as I have low-functionig thyroid and chose NOT to go with replacement and am trying to boost production of my own. AND AC's question was in regards to a SHTF scenario and not what she can run out and grab when she goes to the market later. paralegal, right? you love to play with details but miss the big picture and hate to admit youre not the authority. Paralegal? LMAO. No, I am in no way an authority. But I thought this was a SHTF - what to do about it in an end of the world scenario Thread and not an EXPERTS-ONLY-PLEEZ thread. you dont have to be an expert to follow their dictum of 'firstly do no harm' I was thinking something in the legal field as lawyers are trained to refuse to acknowledge any fact that doesnt bolster their case or status. They will not admit they made a mistake under any circumstances, preferring to attempt only to distract, proportionalize or smear any opposition by any means. This nation died when the facts, however uncomfortable, no longer mattered in proposing solutions to problems or in fact in identifying problems. No amount of first aid helps when facts are given anything less than absolute priority. |

The thyroid produces a lot of hormones, some that we don't know or understand, besides also containing the parathyroid glands (four little areas) that produce calcitonin. That method will be so out there, that it'll very difficult to get the correct dosage. The main issue I see is one of prions. Prions are a little understood folded protein that is not life as we know it. Consuming animal prions can cause things like BSE or mad cow disease. As such, I sure couldn't recommend it, but I'm sure that some people may try such things to compensate for a lack of sythesized thyroid hormone (Synthroid). Probably the majority of survivors will experience the affects of their hypothyroidism (dry hair, suseptibility to cold, dry skin, etc). Yes, some survivors may harvest medicines from drugstores post-collapse. But when those run out, then that's it. Synthroid increases metabolism and so people who try to diet and fail sometimes ask for a prescription of Synthroid, legitimately or otherwise. It will speed things up so that you loose weight but it also makes you feel terribly nervous and agitated. Sounds horrible. I'd rather eat less. The issue by the way is similar for diabetics and insulin. I'm sure some people may try eating cow pancreas. Can you imagine trying to determine if it's fresh enough or has any efficacy whatsoever. It's why they especially have it rough. Not many people die from being hypothyroid, but it will be uncomfortable. People used to live with it prior to 1950 or so. Today many people post-45 are taking Sythroid...it's one of the most common drugs taken. shtf? then prions are a distant consideration relative to being killed and eaten for my thyroid in the next 24 hours. SHTF and you can forget every comfort, security and future you ever knew or hoped for. there will come a time where the survivors realize that they, giving it all away to looters in expensive suits and tassle shoes was not such a good idea as an exchange for the opportunity to be consumed with entertainments. |

All hype or great stuff? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22817037 GREAT STUFF. I am drinking cocnut oil in my coffee this morning :-) Blend it up in a blender, trust me. Makes it way better. |
| AlkaliDesert User ID: 14239828 12/14/2012 12:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When preppers put out a post, it's often tailored to one specific aspect of preparedness. Many of us spend a huge amount of time to research and discuss topics from lots of angles that you might not be aware of. If you watched the whole video, he discusses things like ORS, in addition to anti-diarrhea meds, but since that's not OTC he doesn't talk about it. He discusses the method for metabolically processing certain medicines through the kidneys or liver as well. It's pretty in depth for such short video. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1110734 ORS (AKA. Pedialyte) is OTC. It's also easy to obtain and store the ingredients. 1 liter/quart of purified water 1/2 teaspoon of table salt 8 teaspoons of sugar or 2 teaspoons of Karo syrup Optional ingredients: *Potassium source - 1/4 teaspoon of salt substitute (provides potassium - get salt substitute, no "lite salt" which is half potassium chloride/half table salt. And definitely not something herb-based like Mrs. Dash). Or replace half the water with fruit juice or similar (orange, lemon, apple, mashed banana, mashed potato) and decrease the sugar to two tablespoons. *1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (diarrhea only - don't give if vomiting) *Unsweetened drink mix (such as Kool-Aid) or artificial sweetener (not more sugar!) for flavor if desired. Give in small sips (a teaspoon every 10 minutes or so while vomiting, increasing as tolerated). Continue giving if vomiting - some is still absorbed. While proportions should be kept roughly similar to this, it isn't that picky a recipe - in third world countries, it's taught as "handful of sugar, three-finger pinch of salt, and a gourd of water". The salt should be noticeable, but not burning ("no saltier than tears"). If you feel the need to pre-mix, storing sugar separately will improve shelf life. I agree that it would have made sense to focus on this a bit more. Also, Pepto-Bismol may be a better choice for adults than loperamide, as it actually binds and kills bacteria rather than just slowing down the intestines - he mentions that diarrhea is the body's natural defense, and Pepto-Bismol better addresses this. Shouldn't be used for kids, though. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 19510487 12/14/2012 12:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Does anyone know if there is any alternative treatment for thyroid replacement hormone? I know there are herbs that are recommended to "aid" deficient thyroid & adrenal function, but I had to have my thyroid gland removed because of severe Hashimoto's (autoimmune disease), so there isn't anything left for herbs to "aid". Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25342985 I currently take Armour Thyroid, not the synthetic stuff. Does anyone know if there is a way to make a "DIY" preparation at home from either animal or human thyroid glands that would keep the worst of the terrible symptoms at a manageable level? Thyroid removed due to Hashimoto's (in '70) and have been living well with AOR's T-100 and Standard Process Symplex F. I get cases of T-100 from that famous bodybuilding website, great service. I have not been to a doctor forever since I came of legal age, however, a naturopath originaly got me onto this stuff. AOR's cows and sheep come from New Zealand and Argentina, so I trust them the most. I believe Standard Process' cows come from China, but not 100% positive, just heard it on a forum. I do daily spiritual/mental clearing work, and I find the body responds better now to the T-100 pills, so must take a wholistic approach and be ready (peaceful)(for body death, which happens eventually anyways :-) |

| anonimalle User ID: 29870091 12/14/2012 01:49 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My very top pick is this. Yunnan Paiyao Yunnan Paiyao - Anti-Bleeding Formula The clotting time for blood when Yunnan Paiyao was used. The clotting time for human blood in a test tube was observed to be reduced by 33%. In animals, studies where actual body bleeding rate was examined, it was cut by 54%. During the Vietnam war, Yunnan Paiyao was often discovered in a tiny bottle on the bodies of Vietcong soldiers. Wounded soldiers sprinkled it on their injuries to halt severe bleeding while waiting for emergency medical treatment. This information is found on various sites on the internet. Shop prices and get something that contains the red pill along with the powder. Also top listed. Also milk thistle for mushroom poisoning. Activated charcoal for snake bites and poisoning. I have others but these are tops. Important post OP thanks.
