Does anyone know if there is a way to make a "DIY" preparation at home from either animal or human thyroid glands that would keep the worst of the terrible symptoms at a manageable level?

your best option is either buy a kilo of your meds, or learn which animals around you have a tasty thyroid gland they may wish to donate.

Can't afford a kilo of meds all at once, and the doc won't write a scrip for but 6 mos at a time even if I could. So pharmacy raiding would probably be a necessity, but I'd be competing with thousands of others and that would be a good way to get killed that I'd like to avoid if possible.

I don't really care if 'donor' animal thyroids are tasty or not, although I don't think just eating them would be much help. Armour is made from dessicated animal thyroids, but I don't know how to concentrate the active ingredients once you've dried and powdered the gland. That's why I was asking if anyone knew of an information source for how to make your own DIY preparation. There are always people dieing, so harvesting glands from very recently dead humans could be an option too, I guess. Maybe just hang out near a pharmacy and do a little harvesting on the losers of the battle for pills :)

you sound like you figured it out pretty much.
I dont know exactly they process the thyroid, but dessicated means 'dried' and I dont think they do much to it.
I dont know if it's a pork origin or mixed or other, should that matter, but you can ask them.
Since it's a natural product the actual concentrations of t3 and t4 thyroid hormones is variable, that's why it's not popular with most endocrinologists.
Sad fact is that when the pharmacies are closed for any length of time, those with chronic organ diseases especially asthma, cardiac disease, diabetes and copd will quickly die off by the millions per week.
