Norovirus to ruin Christmas for thousands

Families face ruined Christmas celebrations as the worst-ever outbreak of the winter vomiting bug escalates sharply.

Almost 900,000 people in England alone have been infected with norovirus this winter, updated official figures suggest. It causes severely upset stomachs for up to five days.

The number is almost twice as many as were infected by mid-December last year and is the worst start to the norovirus season on record. More than 5,000 NHS workers are reportedly calling in sick every day with the bug.

The greater number of parties and gatherings as the festive season approaches has contributed to the rise, according to experts. Those who experience norovirus in the days before Christmas need to “weigh up” whether they should visit family and friends, particularly frail relatives such as elderly grandparents, they said.

Even careful hand-washing and other measures “cannot guarantee” that it will not be passed on, warned John Harris, an expert on norovirus at the Health Protection Agency.

Those who had been ill could unknowingly infect others for up to a week after they had recovered, said another expert.

They were speaking after the HPA published figures showing that this year’s outbreak appeared to be accelerating. The data suggest some 120,000 people have suffered the illness in the last seven days, roughly double the number of the previous week.

Meanwhile, data from the Department of Health showed 2,398 hospital beds were closed due to norovirus - equating to 1 in 50 of all available beds, a newspaper reported.

Further figures showed an average of 5,263 NHS staff were calling in sick with typical symptoms every day, according to the Daily Mail. During November some 128,800 working days were lost in the NHS due to employee sickness. It is estimated that 0.4% of the 1.4 million health workers are off with symptoms.

Mr Harris said that a simple handshake was enough to pass on the bug, if an infected person had not washed properly after going to the lavatory. It could also be passed on by those handling food.

Thorough handwashing after using the lavatory, before preparing food and before eating could minimise the risk but could not eliminate it, he said.

“If you are good at making sure people are hygienic, and making sure that people who have been symptomatic stay away from those at risk of infection, you still can’t guarantee that they aren’t going to get it,” he said. People needed to consider whether to invite relatives around if there had been norovirus in the house recently, he said. Guests needed to think about whether to go.

Norovirus hardly ever kills. The few documented cases of it doing so have been in people with serious underlying health problems. “When it does kill, it tends to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Norovirus is really something you die with, not of,” said Mr Harris.

None the less, it is extremely unpleasant, causing not only vomiting and diarrhoea but also intense flu-like symptoms. It can also lead to dangerous dehydration in the elderly, the infirm and babies.

Mr Harris said: “I don’t want to be a killjoy. People need to weigh this up against the need for an elderly relative to have contact with family at a time like Christmas.”

He stressed that the “vast majority” of the population was not infected.

Professor Ian Clarke of Southampton University, an authority on norovirus, said that festive socialising was “without question” leading to more infection. “People with small children are going to parties, there’s much more social mixing at this time of year. The opportunities for spreading are increased,” he said.

People were not infectious during the 24 to 48-hour incubation period before falling ill and tended to isolate themselves while they had symptoms, which last up to five days. But they could still spread the virus for up to a week after recovering, Prof Clarke said, a period he described as the “danger zone”.

People should wash their hands vigorously with soap under running water for 90 seconds to ensure they were truly clean, he said.

Clothes or bedding that might be infected should be washed at 60C or above to kill the bug, which can survive outside the body for days or weeks.

Prof Clarke said: “You need to be extremely careful. The infection dose is so small, which is what makes it so easily spread. I’m not sure there are any disinfectants that are proven to get rid of human norovirus. Just adding detergent doesn’t kill it, you have got to wash it out.”
