Preppers - have you thought of this??
Hi all,

Short term lurker, 1st time poster. Its taken me ages to work my through this giantic forum and im not even close to reading the backlog, so im very sorry if this has been discussed and discarded. If it has, please spare me the ridcule as i dont know any better!

So my idea/pondering comes from being on a diet for a few months :) Has anyone considered stocking up on diet or protein shakes? Assuming you all have water filters of course. I think its a great way to keep stock high when space is low and despite the bad rep the diet shake industy has, they actually arent that bad for providing all the vitamins and minerals the body needs, when you buy the decent ones that is, like most things, you get what you paid for with these!! Also i think they'd be good for if you need to be mobile.

Any thoughts?

Protein shakes maybe. I don't think I would bother with anything diet. People are going to be stressed enough. The higher the calorie content the better. Think of all the fuel your body will burn from what you will be experiencing.....Just my two cents :)

Food supplies needs only to last through the winter and into the first harvest...even then you can supplement your stored supplies with fresh meat from squirrels, rabbits, or a neighbor :)

1) Don't try to read all the old threads, there is more written every day than you can possibly read. There is a button for the most popular of all time threads.

2) Great idea on protein shakes. I don't know their shelf life, perhaps someone can chime in.

If you google "survival podcast" and "survivalist forums" someone there will discuss shelf life of stored protein.

3) Read and live by the disclaimer on the bottom of the page.

Re: Preppers - have you thought of this??
It's not an unreasonable idea. If you watched "Deep Impact" the film about an ELE (Extinction Level Event), the cabinet member who was going to sea was packing Ensure.

The reality is that it is a decent idea for storing food/water in a limited space. The main problem I see is that a sustained diet of protein shakes leads to heart issues. Usually the heart gets weak from sudden progressive weigh loss coupled with weakening heart values. You should look it up. It's a fairly common issue with crash diets. Lots of people have had this issue along with movie stars that suddenly lose weight for a part. Don't take my word for it, but research it yourself.

A healthy diet would be varied. While a portion of your food stores could include some protein shakes, you probably could mix up something like powdered milk, protein powder, sugar, and stir in some things to make your own. It probably would take less space. There's benefits to having some stored liquid in the ready-made cans of protein shakes, but if you have a good source of water, then it's not as necessary.

A major portion of most recommended food storage is bread-making materials. Usually that included wheat that hasn't been milled, but often also including flour, yeast, salt, sugar, and stored water. That means having a hand mill. I personally recommend baking pita bread as that's way easier to bake quickly and easier to fold things into for a simple meal.

A common problem people in survival situations encounter is low blood sugar. They desperately need something to boost their sugar, but they mostly are living on whatever wild edibles and wild game or fish protein that they can find. It's important to realize that the body needs carbon skeletons from carbohydrates as well as protein. When you eat excess protein, you urinate it out. When you have excess carbs, the body sees the surplus and stores it as fat as a survival mechanism. This means it's vital for multiple reasons from a nutrional standpoint to have plenty of carb sources.

You can't harvest much from mid-November through late May. That means you MUST store food and not count on "winging it" by finding wild edibles of one sort or another. While people think they understand nutrition well enough, in a survival situation when you're working far harder and walking further, you actually need far more calories than normal. This is why the Latter Day Saints (LDS) and others spend a lot of time on carefully calculated nutrional needs. Those lists were made by dieticians. Also true MREs are calculated based upon heavy workload and often provide ~4000 calories versus a standard for 70kg men of 2000 calories. That's twice as much, and hence why all MREs are not the same.

 Quoting: BRIEF

While it's essentially true that you need to get through this crucial period, it's also true that overhunting, overtrapping, and overfishing are expected historical events during periods when far more people are harvesting from the wild. Lots of people will be eating everything they can find, and this will mean a lot of wild edibles will be consumed in various states of growth based upon the season. This means food will be taken at inopportune times when it's still growing and won't be as nutrious as it could be. Don't count on harvesting too much. Whatever you can find from your carefully practiced foraging skills will be a blessing, but not something you can count on.

It's my belief that a lot of livestock will be shot by zealous hunters trying to feed themselves, not wild game. That's far easier to hunt, and you can expect a lot of angry farmers as a result.

If you've been to survival school of any kind, you know that many wild game meats are very low in fat. You could actually starve to death by what few game animals you take based upon how much activity is needed to hunt or trap. It's not a great plan.
