The Earth is lit from the left. Prove it. Measure how much of the pic it takes up, find the field of view of the camera and prove it is too small. I'll bet you won't even try. I've seen it done and the Earth takes up about 2 degrees just like it should. If you have to insist that you've won an Internet argument, you've probably lost badly. - Danth's Law |
nomuse (not logged in) User ID: 2380183 United States 12/14/2012 06:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Part of the problem is few people know how large the Moon is from Earth. They may think they do, but most of what they are going by is memory of how the Moon "looks" on the horizon, and photographs that were specifically set up (if not actively edited) to show the Moon in a dramatic way. Human FOV is about 50 degrees. Moon subtends 1/2 a degree (same as the Sun). So it is actually 1/100th of your field of vision. Regardless of whether it is on the horizon or directly overhead. FOV of an average camera with a "portrait" lens is a bit smaller; say 40 degrees. A good zoom (optical or electronic) on your average point-and-click drops this down to as low as 15 degrees. NO picture taken on Earth will show the Moon filling a quarter of the frame, or more, unless it is taken through a professional-grade long lens, or has been manipulated in processing. Oh, yeah -- and the lunar hassie? Wide lens. 60-70 degrees if I remember correctly. One GLANCE at the average lunar vista should reveal that to anyone with the ability and willingness to look! |

Show me? Quoting: Aussie OP 19413719 All pictures taken on the Moon are available online. So it should be easy enough for you to test the veracity of your ASSumption. And no. Nobody needs to show you. No point in catering to the demands of an ignorant moran. So your untested ASSumption has miraculously transformed into "evidence" in zero seconds flat? 'Cause you're a hoaxie. To lazy, and to inept, to actually LOOK. Reaching for the sky makes you taller. Hi! My name is Halcyon Dayz and I'm addicted to morans. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 19413719 Australia 12/15/2012 06:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | so the sun is bigger when viewed from the moon, and earth is smaller when viewed from the moon... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19413719 lol that makes sense... Well it does, if you are 384,400 km closer to the sun it will look bigger. If you are 384,400 km from earth it will look smaller. so the moon looks bigger from Earth than the Earth does from the moon |

Quoting: Doommincus Maximus On average the Moon is the exact same distance from the Sun as the Earth is. 1 Lunar orbit diameter is only 0.5% from the Earth-Moon's distance to the Sun. So observing a change in optical size of the Sun would require precise measurements. It's not something you could just see. Pretty much all Apollo surface images which have the Sun in it have it seriously overlit anyway. They show the Sun as a big blob, not its actual apparent size. And everybody who has bothered to actually calculate the size of the Earth in the Apollo images has concluded that it is about 2 minutes of arc wide. Close enough for government business.
