In 1982, the Kennesaw City Council unanimously passed a law requiring heads of households to own at least one firearm with ammunition.

The ordinance states the gun law is needed to "protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants."

Then-councilman J.O. Stephenson said after the ordinance was passed, everyone "went crazy."

"People all over the country said there would be shootings in the street and violence in homes," he said. "Of course, that wasn't the case."

In fact, according to Stephenson, it caused the crime rate in the city to plunge.

Kennesaw Historical Society president Robert Jones said following the law's passage, the crime rate dropped 89 percent in the city, compared to the modest 10 percent drop statewide.

"It did drop after it was passed," he said. "After it initially dropped, it has stayed at the same low level for the past 16 years."

"I didn't think it could be written in a constitutional fashion," he said. "Obviously, it was constitutional, because the American Civil Liberties Union challenged it in court and we won."

Jones said the ACLU challenged the law in a federal court just after it was passed. In response, the city added a clause adding conscientious objectors to the list of those exem [link to rense.com]

Hi. I am in Central CT. And has been on all news and radio all day. I have been reading this thread throughout the day it is possible I missed a few pages. Here is what I am thoroughly confused about. NBC affiliates on Kiss 95.7 and all the other stations announced his name and said he had killed his father in Hoboken and drove to CT . Now dad is in Stamford. and was told about it by reporters. So who is dead in NJ ???? they reported the body found in the house. The repeated themselves 3 times and announced Ryan Lanza (who is now Adam).And dad was dead.first. So who is dead in NJ !?????

That is foolish a revolver can shoot faster than a semi auto.
A revolver fires as fast as you pull the trigger a semi you have to wait for it to cycle which takes a fraction of a second.

Someone touched on this on another blog. The problem has little to do with gun control, it's the fact that we have deinstitutionalized the mentally ill. Years ago, the mentally ill with violent or erratic tendencies were locked up. In today's PC world, we treat them with a court ordered short term stay at a state mental hospital and then send them home with Abilify or Clozaril and expect them to be compliant with their meds and blend in-with minimal outpatient involvement. There's no doubt that this kid was a ticking time bomb, and apparently everyone in the neighborhood knew it. And for those of you who think this is an insensitive view, get a job at a state psych hospital. I worked for a state hospital in KY as an RN a couple years back. I had a Schizophrenic guy that was cool with me and polite but I had found out he was having some major delusions about me and was plotting some sort of weird attack. This was brought to staff's attention by other patients. Bottom line is: you cannot trust paranoid schizophrenics for a minute. Turn your back on them and see what happens. I have no doubt that this kid was seriously ill and should have been committed a LONG time ago.

Dressed in black fatigues and a military vest, a heavily armed man walked into a Connecticut elementary school Friday and opened fire, shattering the quiet of this southern New England town and leaving the nation reeling at the number of young lives lost.

Within minutes, 26 people were dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School -- 20 of them children. Among the six adults killed were Dawn Hochsprung, the school's beloved principal, and school psychologist Mary Sherlach.

The shooter, identified by three law enforcement officials as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also was killed, apparently by his own hand.
