URGENT: State police say they are assisting local police with a situation in Newtown amid reports of a school shooting.

The school superintendent's office says the district has locked down schools as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. The superintendent's secretary, Kathy June, says reports of a shooting are not confirmed.

State police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance says they have a number of personnel on the scene to assist.

A statement on the district's website stated that afternoon kindergarten classes have been canceled.

Authorities in Connecticut responded to a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Friday morning, the local NBC station reports. Police reported multiple injuries, including a wounded teacher, according to the Hartford Courant.

A local news station in Newtown, Connecticut has reported that an elementary school is being evacuated and the area on lockdown after a shooting.

Sandy Hook Elementary School has released no information yet but parents have been informed of the situation. WTNH-TV reported that at least one child was seen exiting the building with a bloody face, and another appeared to have a hand wound.

A bulletin on the school’s site read: “Afternoon kindergarten is cancelled today, December 14th. There will be no mid-day bus runs.” Parents are being urged not to go to the school until the area has been cleared by police.

Just heard on the radio the principal of the school was shot and killed.... :(

A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps says a teacher has been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital, but it's unclear if that's the only injury.

State police sources said one shooter is dead. Earlier reports of a second shooter are unconfirmed. A person in one room had “numerous gunshot wounds,” police said.

According to the Hartford Courant, police are reporting a number of injured parties. The nature of their injuries is not clear.
