Take away guns, they use knives.
Take away knives they will use their hands.
No weapons of any kind are allowed in prisons,
yet many people are stabbed in prison with sharpened toothbrushes and combs.

Personally I'd rather be shot then stabbed, I can't think of anything more horrifying then being stabbed to death.
Its much more personal and violent.

And notice most of these crimes occur in places where people are less likely to be capable of defending themselves.
And police mostly solve crimes, after they happen.
Having a cop be in the right place at the right time enough to save you from a violent crime is about as likely as winning the lottery.

OP you stated that you had a "hunting" gun. Tell me about it in some detail. I doubt that you can. If you are a hunter, gun collector, or target shooter, you would understand the concept of gun ownership. the guns are only for "protection" line is not the way most gun owners think. I have guns and would use them to protect myself and others if there was no other option. I enjoy the practice and disiplin it takes to be accurate, and really love the great meat my hunting can provide. We have allowed the mostly young people to become detached from the responsibilitys of life by creating the nanny state and escapes from them by violance in TV, Games, and our communities. It is the person who is broken, the gun was just a tool. Fix the communities, teach rresponsibility, and don't allow this behavior.
