Sorry I can't agree with this. I wouldn't home school my kiddies. They need to be around kids their own age and be able to play and have fun and make friends.

I find home schooled children a little withdrawn, shy & too sheltered.

I need a shirt with that saying. Ha ha. Love it! That is the number 1 argument I get anytime I mention that I homeschool my kids. People look at me in horror thinking that my kids need to be socialized and will be isolated and awkward. Not the case at all. They are polite, very outspoken, and get along great with other kids at all of the group activities I include them in out in the community. One difference I do notice is that they are more well behaved and have better manners and language than a lot of those other kids. My 4 year old lectures a neighborhood boy the same age when he curses. Ha ha

School should be about education and learning. Not about making friends. If a parent is a good parent, they will include their kids in activities outside of school where they can be socialized in a more controlled manner. Karate, dance, drama at the local community theater, art classes at the library, storytime group at the library, girl scouts, boy scouts, and so much more. Kids go to public school and are so caught up with the social aspects that they don't learn a thing other than a whole lot about drugs, sex, bullying, etc.

You have a good point there. I still think that children benefit from going to school, bullying is a big worry to me, and if it were to happen I would take my son out of school.
I went to a public school and although a lot of my friends were into drugs I stayed right away from it because I was shown at a young age what it can do to you, and if you teach your kids they will be able to say no too.

Home schooled kids average in the 84th percentile on standardized tests nationally. For those of you who weren't hom schooled yourselves, that puts them 34 percentile points above the average publicly educated sheep.

Home schooled kids graduate college more often and earn higher GPA's.

Basically, the average home schooled kid is as smart and knowledgable as the best that public schools can produce.

Universities have began to court home schooled children because they don't need to be force fed the material. They are self directed and don't need baby sitters.

Why the hell did you find it necessary to have 10 children?!

Do you not believe in birth control?

Were you just reckless?

What POSSIBLE benefit could any two people have from birthing 10 children? Support in your old age maybe? Religious fanatics maybe?

NO justification.

Very true. If Americans had just pulled their kids en-mass out of public schools after the supreme court banned God in 1962 we'd be in a lot better shape now.

[link to www.jesus-is-savior.com]

Unfortunately the churches were asleep at the wheel. Astoundingly they didn't see the danger, even though the lie of public education, as a good way to indoctrinate their children into the American way, was exposed.

Even now pastors just don't get it. They want to 'evangelize' their communities but ignore the total loss of young people to secular education. The Muslims understand this. They are militant in the establishment of muslim schools. Christian pastors in America are too soft and complacent.

It's people like this who are unwilling to live on one income that has gotten this country in trouble . . . when women came to (falsely) believe that being a homemaker was not fulfilling and entered the workforce, society "adapted" and raised prices to match the two-income standard . . . now, it's much harder for a couple/family to live on one income - but it can be done. It's called budgeting and being unselfish.

And sacrifice.

Most of these people are so adamant about protecting their kids to the best of their ability and in the same breath tell them to hurry up and get ready for school.

You would be surprised at how much kids can learn on their own. It does not have to be a full time job. Learning can happen any time and any place. It is the 8 hour work day and 8 hour school day that is indoctrinated so deeply in the minds of people today.

So true. My husband works as a residential trash truck driver and is also a FT engineering student. I cherish my role as a homemaker. One income is hard sometimes but budgeting is the key. We live debt free, cars are paid off, live without all the luxuries most people do, and we live in a paid off nice mobile home. Have I fantasized about going back to work full time to move into a nice big house, or drive a newer car, sure BUT it is not worth it to me to give up homeschooling my kids. Besides, my husband would NEVER get the hang of the house work or budget. Ha ha. We have very defined male/female roles in our house and I wish more families would return to those old-fashioned values.

Re: You're an ASSHOLE if you're not considering homeschooling at this point.
Although I agree as to your reasoning, is anybody thinking of long term implications? If you think about it, we're going to have a generation who will be so socially fucked up that that alone might breed killing machines.

We are losing our social skills ever since electronic communications crept into our lives.
We're teaching children not even to touch another (germs). There's hardly anymore eye contact because they're too busy fussin' with their iPhones while walking, jogging, shopping, sunbathing, driving or waiting for a bus.

So what will happen if we restrict this generation from interacting with one another during their formative years by keeping them home? We're going to have a generation of human robots.

I don't profess to know the answer but I can see the future ramifications and the future is looking more and more frightening with each passing day though.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29150242

False BS... The impression society has that homeschoolers are socially awkward, loner, weirdos is driven by media and government hell bent on getting their hands on your kids and indoctrinating them to the new agenda.

I know LOTS of homeschooled kids...

I would take 10 homeschooled kids for every 1 from public or 5 from private. They are often self-secure, polite, controlled, well mannered kind, smart, engaging, mature etc... I would take those characteristics any day over the clones the public schools spit out...

Stop spreading non sense...

You've never been homeschooled.
I was homeschooled until 5th grade, and the poster you quoted is CORRECT. We are not learning anything useful in public school, but when I missed out on communicating with peers at a young age, my social proficiency suffered. It took me years to be able to hang out in normal groups of people outside of school consistently and flow.

Look. If you homeschool your kid they are going to be and feel "different," and if you public school them, they are going to be raised just right for the society they are being rammed into.

THE SOCIETY IS THE PROBLEM.

No, certainly not exclusively, because that is almost always detrimental to children.

Homeschooled kids are able to interact with all ages, young to very old . . . you won't find that to be the case with public schooled kids because they are more restricted, age/peer-wise, and thus, don't have the skills to interact with a broad age range.

I believe your perception that hs children are "withdrawn, shy and too sheltered" is because they are generally more polite and considerate and therefore not obnoxious and pushy, they have a better understanding of respect for others, and are often quite busy with academia and creative pursuits.

Don't view homeschooling your own child in terms of $$$ "pay" . . .

You get to teach your child right from wrong, bad from good. You get to instill proper values and manners into their character. You can allow your child the freedom to think for himself/herself and explore all forms of art and music and religion and philosophy. You can teach at any time, day or night, an hour here, a few hours there. You get to spend quality time with your child and you don't have to worry that he/she is being pressured into smoking pot or guzzling alcohol or having sex with peers and perverts. You can take a break whenever you want to go outside or go for a walk or to a museum or art gallery. You have the choice to involve your own children in creating a curriculum and keeping records. You get to do what every parent SHOULD do, which is teach your child, rather than handing them over to strangers to do it for you. And you have the ability to give your child something the school system and society does not - moderation.

All THAT ^^^ and more is how you are a "paid" homeschooling teacher.

Re: You're an ASSHOLE if you're not considering homeschooling at this point.
Sorry I can't agree with this. I wouldn't home school my kiddies. They need to be around kids their own age and be able to play and have fun and make friends.

I find home schooled children a little withdrawn, shy & too sheltered.

Wow, are you wrong.

You don't think kids should be around others their own age?

No, certainly not exclusively, because that is almost always detrimental to children.

Homeschooled kids are able to interact with all ages, young to very old . . . you won't find that to be the case with public schooled kids because they are more restricted, age/peer-wise, and thus, don't have the skills to interact with a broad age range.

I believe your perception that hs children are "withdrawn, shy and too sheltered" is because they are generally more polite and considerate and therefore not obnoxious and pushy, they have a better understanding of respect for others, and are often quite busy with academia and creative pursuits.

I don't agree that public school kids cannot interact with all age groups at all. I love picking my son up from school and hearing all the fun things he did with his friends and all the things that he has learned that day.

Manners come from the parents before they even enter the schooling system. I say they are a little withdrawn and shy because they don't talk or play with any of the other children, especially the older ones. This is just my opinion and I believe every parent has the right to chose what they want for the kids.

I do have a question though, how many hours do you spend a day teaching your child at home?

4 hours maximum per day for us. We are more into unschooling though. Look it up.

Sometimes nothing at all and they STILL are leaps and bounds to their public school equivalents.
