What really amazes me is people keep on popping the kids out into this God Awful, fucked up world then complain about how other parents deal with their spawn.

I never had kids, never will have kids... Too much suffering in this world to bring more souls into this burning cesspool of a world.

wtf.. all white community? And that makes you fill safe? I live on a Indian reservation to stay Away from People like you. And im home schooling my kid. The books they teach our kids are all lies.. And my heart goes out to the Parents that are going home tonight without there babys. Like my people that died at Wounded Knee Massacre. From Who? White People that hate on all other colors. Hummm Good Luck on that safe White Community, when shit hits the fan...

You are a racist, plain and simple.

I have bolded your ignorant grammatical errors. And I won't even comment on your incomplete sentence structure.

A poorly-educated (in public school system?) racist "teaching" at home . . . your child is no doubt not being provided a properly balanced curriculum, but is also picking up on your racism, which you likely make no effort to hide around him/her.

OMG.. Did you proof read ur comment? The guy that killed them babys was a white person. his mother was a white teacher trying to do sumthing for all the different races in her class. i bet they lived in a all white community as well.

Ignorance. Racism.

Two VERY good reasons for someone to not homeschool.

No, certainly not exclusively, because that is almost always detrimental to children.

Homeschooled kids are able to interact with all ages, young to very old . . . you won't find that to be the case with public schooled kids because they are more restricted, age/peer-wise, and thus, don't have the skills to interact with a broad age range.

I believe your perception that hs children are "withdrawn, shy and too sheltered" is because they are generally more polite and considerate and therefore not obnoxious and pushy, they have a better understanding of respect for others, and are often quite busy with academia and creative pursuits.
 Quoting: itsamadmadworld

I don't agree that public school kids cannot interact with all age groups at all. I love picking my son up from school and hearing all the fun things he did with his friends and all the things that he has learned that day.

Manners come from the parents before they even enter the schooling system. I say they are a little withdrawn and shy because they don't talk or play with any of the other children, especially the older ones. This is just my opinion and I believe every parent has the right to chose what they want for the kids.

I do have a question though, how many hours do you spend a day teaching your child at home?
 Quoting: Jade KL

Your comment about manners is what should ideally happen, but often does not . . . many parents depend on schools to teach everything, including the most basic things like manners and honesty, and that's not proper parenting, imo.

I think homeschooled kids might be viewed as a little withdrawn or shy if they are placed into a group of public schooled kids . . . not because they "can't" interact, but they just react differently.

I too, believe parents have the right to choose the educational path for their children, but I also believe that too many parents are negligent and take whatever path is easiest for them, rather than what's best for their kids, and I imagine you would agree with that. There's a great deal of failed parenting out there and we're seeing it manifested in many ways in society.

When I was homeschooling, generally no more than three hours per day. I spent considerable time developing each year's curriculum; never relied on any full package - I would gather a variety of materials and then create an eclectic curriculum.
 Quoting: itsamadmadworld

I would have to agree with you here. There are way to many lazy parents out there. It seems they think schools will teach their kids everything they need to know in life, and once they start school they aren't their responsibility anymore, its sad.
 Quoting: Jade KL

What I find funny is the only other criticism I get other than the usual "your kids won't be socialized" argument is that I am just too lazy to get up and get my kids to school. Ha ha. I think the lazy parents are the ones who put their kids on a bus and go back home to do whatever all day. If they have a career when their kids start school or start school themselves then fine but what about those who don't work and are kid-free all day?? They have the nerve to call ME lazy. I know a lot of homeschool parents who start their day later about 10 or so because they say that well rested kids and parents with a relaxed breakfast = better learning. I agree with that although me and my kids start our school days at 8am.

Re: You're an ASSHOLE if you're not considering homeschooling at this point.
My oldest kid just started public school this year. Kindergarten. She went to private school for PreK. I won't ever do private school again. Too many totally spoiled and stuck up kids who are there because their parents wouldn't dare expose them to the low-lives (eye roll) that go to public school (i.e. kids of doctors and lawyers, etc). So far, I am happy with the education. We are in a very good school district, so I am sure that helps. I have good friends who homeschool, so it is an idea I have entertained and am entertaining even more after what happened in CT.

However, one of those good homeschooling friends has kids that are 12 and 10. They are TERRIFIED to be away from home and their mom. They have homeschooling get-togethers or whatever you want to call them once a week with other kids and parents, and those go fine because Mommy is there. But these kids will NOT be left alone anywhere without Mom. At the age of 12. Really? I think by that time, kid should be getting used to spreading their wings a bit. They shouldn't be afraid of going to a birthday party without Mom. So seeing that, I am afraid I would be stifling my VERY sociable little girl by homeschooling.

I guess I'm not a total asshole by OP's definition since I am CONSIDERING homeschooling. First sign of bullying or any B.S. going on at her school, I am without a doubt pulling her out and homeschooling. There was a series of suicides here last year, something like 4 kids in a week's span. But I am happy with her education so far. I just can't shake the gnawing feeling in the bottom of my gut that kids belong with their parents...

It is a lot harder of a decision OP than what you make it out to be. My daughter LOVES school and being with other kids. Hmmmmmmm.

That sounds like a family dynamic problem that is perhaps the reason they chose homeschooling, and probably exacerbated by homeschooling, not an inherent problem with homeschooling. (The people who are saying they would never let their kid out of their sight ever in the world today are likely to have this problem.)

I don't personally know any homeschooling families with kids that clingy. Mine sure aren't.

The good thing about homeschooling is that you have 100% total control over how you do things. Don't want your kid to be like that? Have her do activities where you aren't present. Have babysitters occasionally. Let her go over to friend's houses to play.

But I agree that it's a big decision that requires a real commitment of time and energy.

He was only homeschooled as a teenager I believe hearing, after he was having problems in traditional school. I remember hearing former classmates saying he carried a briefcase to class, so he was in public school at least for some time.

Thanks for your response. hf It helps to hear all of that. It is something on which I am truly studying my heart, and I appreciate your views and experiences. You make a very good points on tips to teach them to be independent. Her kids regularly score 2 grade levels above where they need to be, and she is not some exceptionally gifted genius who was made for homeschooling. So I know I could do it. I just have that fear of the clinginess. Glad to hear that is the exception.

Why not teach your child to instead defend the innocent, to stand up to bullies, and to find the good in humanity, rather than fear?

If we start treating one another with a bit more respect, humility, empathy, and concern the rates of these atrocities would drop.

Instead, we as a nation value materialism and view it as a sign of success, teach that focusing on differences are more important than finding common ground, and that being 'right' on an issue is more important than conceding to differing opinions.

Although I agree as to your reasoning, is anybody thinking of long term implications? If you think about it, we're going to have a generation who will be so socially fucked up that that alone might breed killing machines.

We are losing our social skills ever since electronic communications crept into our lives.
We're teaching children not even to touch another (germs). There's hardly anymore eye contact because they're too busy fussin' with their iPhones while walking, jogging, shopping, sunbathing, driving or waiting for a bus.

So what will happen if we restrict this generation from interacting with one another during their formative years by keeping them home? We're going to have a generation of human robots.

I don't profess to know the answer but I can see the future ramifications and the future is looking more and more frightening with each passing day though.

I homeschooled my kids and it is a misconception that homeschooled children don't interact with other children. There are homeschool groups that meet weekly and have various activities for the kids to get involved in. Some schools allow your homeschooled child to participate in gym, music, art, sports activities, etc. My children were also involved in the YMCA. They played soccer, basketball and also took swimming and karate lessons. They also played with all the neighborhood children.

I totally agree with you, and not just for safety reasons either. I was visiting my cousin last night and her 11 year old daughter said she had a sex education class that day. She said they taught her about oral sex! She told me she never knew anything about that and she thought it was gross. She said it made her feel like she could throw up. Teaching 11 year olds about oral sex....I mean WTF????

It is not easy for single parents to homeschool and work.

It is also hard for families were both parents have to work 40-50 hours days.

Society and the super wealthy elites have made it near impossible to keep your kids our of the brainwashing terror institutions known as schools.

Most inner city schools are simply daytime detention centers for miscreants and future criminals anyway.

My sister homeschooled her 3 kids. It was very diffiult for her as she stayed home while her husband worked. It became damn near impossible for them to pay the bills on one income.

She could not have done it as a single mom if they had split up, she admits this.

With the monumental amount of single mothers and breakups of marriages I can see how difficult a prospect it is for mother and fathers to take on.

Not that it is not entirely right to do it. Sisters kids came out brilliant. Was worth the time. But just making folks aware that it takes a strong family to make it work. I feel sorry for those who cannot do it. Feel worse for the kids.

If you want to *protect* your kids from shooters, that means you can never go see a movie (Aurora Shootings), you can't send your kids to college (Virginia Tech), nor can you ever go to a mall (Oregon shooting), nor can you go to a grocery store (Tuscon shooting).

Re: You're an ASSHOLE if you're not considering homeschooling at this point.
At present, my 10 year old son attends public school. After the past week, the school tragedy, reading about schools being able to vaccinate children without parental consent...and having a few issues with our school after my son missed a week with a broken arm..I am reconsidering this heavily. I'm researching and compiling info to discuss with my son, and my husband. I believe the OP called me out in another thread about this topic, and I have to say thank you for this thread...you've given me much to consider in the coming days. It may just happen that my son won't be returning to public school after Christmas break.

Wait, don't you stay home anyway?

You are the ones OP is talking about.

What a lazy, useless mother.

Terrible world for parents that want to do the right thing and home school. It takes immense forsight and luck to be able to do it even with a good plan and a loving home/ couple.

That entire statement is bsflag.

Every word of it.

Explain?

Live within your means...simple.

You would rather have nice shit than looking after your child's education.

The thread title is right, you are an asshole.

Dont have kids in school, just relating a story about my sisters kids and how tough it can be. Even said it was worth it. If you think single mothers and fathers working and alone have it easy you are wrong.

Your the asshole.

If you want to *protect* your kids from shooters, that means you can never go see a movie (Aurora Shootings), you can't send your kids to college (Virginia Tech), nor can you ever go to a mall (Oregon shooting), nor can you go to a grocery store (Tuscon shooting).

There your kids are now fully protected, they can never leave the house.
