Has anyone notice the hidden story in The Hobbit?
A history of the Jewish people, who were represented by the Dwarfs who lost their Kingdom, Bilbo who seems to mirror the British, the eagle who can easily go as the Americans, the others I still have to figure out what they might represent. Feel free to share your ideas ...

Re: Has anyone notice the hidden story in The Hobbit?
Hmm.
You'd have to read it as an English filter on north west European history and culture.
Some innate English attitudes are hard to read, as everything goes through a Social Class filter.
And old syle Englishman or woman will categorize you on accent, education, ancestry and even shoe type.
So it's Class.
Eg hobbits=ordinary English chappies.
Eagles refer to something very elusive for the English-the nobility and courage of some (not English), and it's not really to do with America.

C.S. Lewis and Tolkien were writing out interpretive analogies of "the end of days". Lewis talked about it in an interview once.

I saw the movie last night, I noticed the parallels between the dwarfs and the Jews. I think you're also right about Bilbo and the eagles representing England and the US. In the movie, at one point Bilbo is getting ready to abandon the mission and go back home, one of the dwarfs tries to stop him and Bilbo says something like "I'm not used to this kind of life, always being on the road and living in danger, you dwarfs ARE used to this, you don't have a home." Then later on in the movie Thorin asks Bilbo why he came back instead of going home and Bilbo replies (paraphrasing) "I now know what it feels like to be without a home, so I want to try to help you take back your home (Erebor, which = Israel) if I can."

Re: Has anyone notice the hidden story in The Hobbit?
I thought it was interesting, too, how Gandalf might parallel God in some way....the "Light" on the end of His staff to shine in the dark places and keep evil at bay, His Wisdom and patience with us when He can see our path but we have yet to realize it, and He had the "Key" to give the dwarves that would open the "secret door" back to their kingdom. "Key of David" possibly? Also the "dragon" was guarding their Kingdom and keeping them from returning! I can see that!

I saw it last night and didn't really think of these parallels until you brought it up but I can see that now! Thanks!

Well, the dwarves do have really big noses and love gold and treasure.

Gandalf could also represent Moses.

Tolkien wrote about WW1.

Nothing "mystical", just tragic.

Re: Has anyone notice the hidden story in The Hobbit?
thank you for your feedback. I've tried to look at this from a historian point of view, nothing mystical about that but I just found it interesting to find a correlation between things

Re: Has anyone notice the hidden story in The Hobbit?
Tolkien was a MAJOR catholic believer and it was he who converted CS lewis to Christianity - he did admit to filling his stories with messages bet very subtle ones, whilst lewis (Narnia) was much more overt.
