Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 29816376 United States 12/14/2012 10:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Further, I believe that security should be less visible than on-site swat teams, barbed wire, and iron gates at our schools. It should be paramount that issues of privacy and soveriegn "rights" are held in greater regard than the collective notion of keeping everyone safe (when there can be no guarantee of such provisions doing precisely what they are pretending to do). In reality, once such provisions are in place, these same security measures can be co-opted by insidious elements of society with intent to do greater harm on the whole than could ever have been done in the de-centralized model....Thus the need for real security which is the sum of its parts, as opposed to the sum of all fears. For that matter, rather than a complete lockdown/rollout of the police state infrastructure onto the highways, biways, and into our shopping malls, schools, arenas, grocery stores, etc., I would like to see more volunteer and undercover private security (decentralized with codified regulations and localized protocols) using "concealed carry" as opposed to a highly visible federal takeover of existing institutions. This, in addition to a well armed populace would be the necessary leverage to help prevent these acts of cowardice. But no measures will adequately ensure our safety and security with absolute certainty. Freedom always involves risk. A risk I much prefer over the alternative being a loss of liberty, freedom and even ultimate enslavement to the very thing that feigns our protection. However, that being said, I seldom count on common sense being applied anymore. |

Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." --Thomas Jefferson, (1764). |

Under Home Office guidelines, firearms licences are only issued if a person has legitimate sporting, collecting, or work-related reasons for ownership. Since 1968, self-defence has not been considered a valid reason to own a firearm. The current licensing procedure involves: positive verification of identity, two referees of verifiable good character who have known the applicant for at least two years (and who may themselves be interviewed and/or investigated as part of the certification), approval of the application by the applicant's own family doctor, an inspection of the premises and cabinet where firearms will be kept and a face-to-face interview by a Firearms Enquiry Officer (FEO) also known as a Firearms Liaison Officer (FLO). A thorough background check of the applicant is then made by Special Branch on behalf of the firearms licensing department. Only when all these stages have been satisfactorily completed will a license be issued, which must be renewed every 5 years. |

Compared to the more prolific gun rights in the United States, they may as well be "banned" in the U.K..... However, at the rate of creeping legislation here in the U.S., it won't be long before we are the spitting image of Europe ~ lest the patriots among us have something to say about it. |

Too bad already. There are conflicting reports getting out even now. It is called freedom of speech and (independent journalism), yes, even general public inquiry. Sure, there are and always will be those who will ever attempt to "muddy the waters". But do not confuse that with every contradiction and every source acting outside the aurthorized narrative. I say, let the lawyers debate the merits of their respective cases. The court of public opinion does not require media censorship!!! |
