my point of view:

at the VERY least parents should pay more attention to the media (games, tv, movie etc) that there kids are tuning into.

at the VERY most we should be having a discussion on a level of censorship in realistic violent video games.

again, i am a gamer. i love video games and i in no way am calling for them all to be banned.

Re: ban video games first
The sad thing about video games is that parents are letting their kids play at younger and younger ages...Kids are then desensitized to murder, blood, violence, death. Same with movies...the younger a child is when sex and death on tv are normal, the worse off they are.

True story...I know a parent who let their child play video games since the time he could walk. When this child was about 8 or 9 years old, he got a butcher knife out of the kitchen and tried to commit suicide...Thank God his mother found him as he had the knife to his throat and only ended up with a surface scratch...Wanna know what was going on in his head??????

The kid thought he could just regenerate...have another life...

My older kids are 15 and 16. I am very careful about what they watch. If it has sexual anything in it, they can't see it. I don't mind blood and violence now, but I never let them play video games til they were older nor let them watch violent or bloody or scary movies. I also have an 8 year old...Same rules apply to him.

It's extremely important that kids know that their actions affect other human beings before they should be allowed to indulge in violent, bloody awful video games or movies...

Once they KNOW the difference between real life and video games and movies, then it's on! I am addicted to WoW, myself and see nothing wrong with playing games...sometimes we all need to blow some shit up in a game so we don't blow shit up IRL, but kids sometimes don't know the difference if they're missing the empathy and compassion genes...
 Quoting: StormeyGoddess

So lets say you raise wery gentle and kind kids, they go to school with other kids that a hoocked on what not and maybe violent allso in their words or acts, then your kid becomes a victim automatically?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29838123

I try to teach my kids to have compassion for other people, to really CARE about others feelings. I try to teach them that the things they do affect other people. That's all I can really do. With that, I've sent them out into the world...praying that I've done enough, ya know? I can't control the rest of the world. I can't even "control" my own children...just hope that I've created wonderful kids that will turn into wonderful adults. They will be exposed to all kinds of people in the real world. Can't protect them from that. So, I don't know what your question is exactly...but...that's my answer...

Some people see my point its been going on for years everyone is used to the violence and see it as the norm it was never this way
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25594339

You're right about this!!!! Society has accepted it as normal...wasn't the way when I was growing up, either. I played Mortal Combat at 18-20, lol! Those were the days! Today, kids are cutting their teeth on violence and sex...So not okay in my book.

Re: ban video games first
Maybe you're all angry young men because your sitting your ass on a couch all day playing video games instead of putting that testosterone to use being physically active and outside.

Ever thought of that?! At a time in a man's life when he has the MOST testosterone, he's sitting stale at home in front of a monitor pretending to be an assassin. And you wonder where the anger comes from.

Another point is that video games are violent, and in the hands/minds of a troubled person is a catalyst for all types of physical violent behavior...on animals, on parents, on inanimate objects, and some extreme cases like today.

And yet another point is that 1st person shooter games are not just games, they're weapons training. How else does a child with no military training take out so many at once? Remember the Virginia shooting?

Yep, I agree.

Take the games before the guns...

It's fucking common sense.

People are being desensitized to violence on a mass scale, brainwashed to think it's 'cool'. Guns don't fucking do that. The media and entertainment industry does.
 Quoting: Mister Obvious

My son was extremely angry when he played video games. Screaming, shouting and throwing things when he lost. He would scare me.

I banned the damn things in my household, and he became a kind, responsible, young grown up man.
 Quoting: Renegade (Me too)

Congradulations on being a parent. It still wasn't the games fault. your kid was acting like a brat and found out that by acting out of line things will be taken away from him.

I tell my nephew that if he can't act civil when he plays games with me he won't be playing them at all and he manners up real fast.
Now when i play with him these days I don't even need to say anything and he is very civil when playing games, no more laughing at extreme death scenes and what not.

Re: ban video games first
I grew up with video games. Including all the violent ones with killings and shootings and all. And guess what, 10 years later I still consider myself to be the most peaceful one in my family. Geez, I can't even bear to kill a fuckin mosquito (believe it or not). So no, I don't think the problem lies with the video games. They DO NOT invoke violence in people. They might prevent the development of social skills (obviously), but that's another topic.

On the other hand, what the heck do I know? I might just be lucky to have brain of my own. There definitely is a whole bunch of people who are too stupid to tell the difference between virtual reality and real life. But that's because they generally lack comprehensive skills and not because they play some games...

Now, why do children get hooked on video games in the first place, huh?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29172527

no, it doesnt mean you are next. but you are probably more numb to violence then someone who didnt.

i played GTA too but i was probably older than you when i did.
 Quoting: Oyster

I'm only as numb to violence as the world has made me. I'm a thinking, reasoning being (aka human) that can separate the world of virtual reality and fantasy from that in which we really exist. The ones who do not have those abilities are mentally sick and are not representative of the vast majority of the population. That being said, video games and other media are NOT responsible or even accountable for situations like this.

This entire discussion is pointless anyway. As much as people want to say, "Well studies show that video games make people more violent," there have been equally as many, if not more, studies that prove otherwise. The REAL blame lies with the person who commits the act. Blaming anyone/anything else is just scapegoating bullshit. Get real, people.

Re: ban video games first
Dont blame the parents.

the parents of TODAYS teens were raised in the 80s themselves...when vid games were first flooding the market.

Back then they were not as gory but still involed 99% time blowing something up or shooting something down.

Because they were not BLATANTLY gory THEIR parents saw no real HARM in them..so the teens and kids of those days packed the games palours to blow up and shoot and rack up high scores for all the KILLS they got..all innocent like.

But the PROGRAMMING was there..laying the GOUNDWORD for the NEXT generation.

Those kids grew up and had kids ALREADY HARDENED to constant killing..even if it was flashy spaceships they were mowing down...

Because they were already hardened...when the new style gore started coming in late 90s they didnt worry about it..it wasnt that far removed from what THEy were already used to as kids...then the battlefield game was made..and pandora opened the box.

The kids loved it...it was intense..realistic..challenging..and it was ONLY a simulation of ww2 right?

Not very gory..jusr basic graphics..but the IDEA was there..IN place..to get them used to shooting PEOPLE..over and over and over again...

Unreal tournament came in then too..same deal but WITH some gore..and set in the future..WITH some splats and gibbs...people were HOOKED.

And now..we have REALISTIC DOOM..played out MASSACRES..again and again and again...being PROUS of ya gibbs..ya kills..bragging on leader boards about your mass slaugheters.

Its FROG IN THE POT syndrome...

ITS NOT the parents..its thew GAMES makers of the 80s that PROGRAMMED the parents to think...ITS JUST A GAME.

THEY KNEW back then WHAT they would be bringing out in the years ahead..and they had to SOFTEN the blow..FIRST get the FUTURE oarents IMMUNE to endless killing..even of innocent "Aliens" and "Ships"...and go from there.

ITS WORKED.

WE NOW have a GENERATION OF FULLY TRAINED KILLING STRATEGISTS..EXPERT SNIPERS...MEAN ASSED SLAUGHTER EXPERTS..IMMUNE TO SHOCK AND GORE..

SHEEP..READY TO SLAUGHTER..when the time comes.

"AND THE SECOND SEAL WAS OPNED..and PEACE was taken from the earth..AND EVERYONE TURNED ON AND KILLED EVERYONE ELSE"

THEY HAVE BEEN TRAINED FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS..

ALL that needs to happen to SET IT OFF..

IS THE SIGNAL.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17027639

My childhood ran from the mid 70's through the 80's. Like most of my peers, I certainly played my share of video/computer games. Contrary to your revisionist history of them, they were not 99% violent...not even close. Some of them were even meant to educate or at least force you to do some creative thinking.

And yes, there were violent ones, and we played those too.

Rest assured, the Atari 2600 did not begin training anyone to be a cold blooded killer.

People of my generation also watched countless old cartoons where characters were routinely shot, blown up, and crushed by anvils falling from the sky. We watched Bonanza in syndication. We had cap guns that made exploding sounds and didn't have an orange tip to ruin the realism factor. We played cowboys and indians.

And yet MOST of us turned out ok. Why? We had guidance. We had parents who put our upbringing at the top of the priority list.

Then there were those who didn't have that guidance. They played the same games and watched the same shows, but yet turned out quite differently. They have become the bad parents of today, who let video games do their babysitting for them.

It's not the games that are to blame; it's the absentee parents who haven't taken an active role in raising their own kids.

Re: ban video games first
Eh. I can't really agree with this. It's a logical idea, but heavilly flawed.

Take me for example. I'm 25 years old. I played Doom when I was 4 years old. I played dark forces when I was 6. I played quake 1 through 3 when I was 7 through 12. I played GTA, GTA 2, GTA 3 throughout my teens, I played farcry, soldier of fortune, etc. I am an experienced gamer, & have played many FPS throughout my most impressionable years. They get more graphic.

I have absolutely NO urge to go & shoot people, let alone children.

The only time visdeo games become an issue is when the player cannot distinguish reality from fantasy. These people make an informed decision to go & shoot people.

If people have the urge to shoot people because their games are not enough, then there is clearly something mentally wrong with the person. Games are not to blame. The moment you start blaming games is the moment you need to start blaming movies - both are interactive entertainment. & if anything, games should be a release for this sort of behavior.

it's true though

the generation this kid belongs to grew up on extremely graphic / realistic first person shooters & grand theft auto..

they don't watch T.V.

They don't have jobs..

They are "gamers"

and it's all they do... all day... every day... for YEARS!

they have become so desensitized and disconnected from reality this type of act becomes a new way of living out their video game fantasy world..

it's like the 4chan troll generation

they have serious mental issues & no one to guide them

the problem isn't weapons

the problem is this fucked up society leading our children down the path of depravity from birth

Re: ban video games first
I absolutely love GLP and I've been lurking here for a long long long time. Anyway, I've been in game design for 14 years and have been involved in the game industry for more than two decades. I've worked on about a dozen triple A titles. Tens of millions have (hopefully) enjoyed my work. So I'm not just some guy who made a web game or two for his CS class. Anyway, topics like are usually enough to draw me out.

Gamers are getting old and the games industry has gotten really, really big. 10+ years ago I kind of laughed at the idea we'd by surpassing the movie industry in sales but that actually happened. It makes sense though because my generation was weened on video games and generally, people don't give up their hobbies when they get older. They tend to refine their tastes in them as well as spend a whole lot more money on them.

Now first person shooters aren't my favorite genre and I've never worked on one. I enjoy RPGs, fighting games and other action games. Those are the sorts of game I've made. But when people spit the word "VIDEO GAMES" with that snotty church lady voice, they really mean first person shooters. They are not talking about Angry Birds or Sonic the Hedgehog.

Now with that said, the 18-25 male demographic are the ones most buying and playing first person shooters, followed secondly by the 25-40 demographic. These games are not for kids and that's why they all carry an M rating.

Asking to ban VIDEO GAMES (i.e. First Person Shooters) is like saying "ban R rated movies". They promote violence and stuff. We should also ban damn near everything shown on TV after 8pm on a weekday really.

Instead of banning, how about we enforce what we already have? How about we have tougher laws against stores that sell M rated games to kids? Or how about punishments for parents who let their kids play M-rated games?
What you're advocating here is trampling on the rights of grown adults to enjoy the kind of entertainment they prefer. It's a great topic starter for a Friday night but a bad idea generally
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29104310

Very well said!!!!! If you weren't Anon, I'd leave you some Karma! :-) I'm almost 40 and a gamer...I don't like shoot em up games, or any game on Xbox, they make me physically ill. I have the worst motion sickness on the planet, but I'm certainly not against an adult playing them. Banning all video games is a ridiculous idea. I'd die without WoW!
 Quoting: StormeyGoddess

Yeah, it's funny. Discussions like these actually make me chuckle as it means we've officially "made it" as a major form of media.

New Media - Old Argument claiming it heralds the downfall of western civilization.

Historically the same arguments and calls for banning have been made against:

Television: Most everyone remembers this
Radio: Elvis the pelvis, etc.
Records: In the 30's "Swing Music" was banned in some places because it was totally evil.
Books: Throughout recorded history

So yeah, the ESRB rating system works. Use that shit! If you didn't know the ESRB is a group, independant of the games industry, that determines the rating for games. A panel of people who know fuck-all about video games are chosen to determine the rating for any given game. This is to prevent any sort of bias and ensures impartiality. They review every piece of content in the game and then determine the rating. So it's literally people like the church ladies who determine the ratings and that's a good thing really IMO.
